View Full Version : But Snap Isnt On?!?!
gibsonguy001 07-11-2007, 05:25 AM can anyone plese tell me why 3d studio max is doing this? as you can see snap is not on. What happens is, I'll be in the perspective window(it only happens in the perspective window) trying to model, but when i click on a vert to move just a wee bit, it goes off the charts. in this picture it moved on the Y-axis to over 5000! i cant finish my model and its really making me upset. please help.

Try modeling on a user viewport, on ortho view. The perspective is not precise for modelling.

I agree with avmport by using user instead of perspective, snap seems to work better in user than perspective. also have tried turning down your snap bias?

This is basically a bug in max..
The perspective view is very inaccurate (god only knows why, when Maya can be just as precise in all views) There is no real fix for this excet to use a different view. All the othrographic viewports, and "user" views should not have this some issue.
Note to Autodesk: FIX THIS ISSUE before adding more useless features :P

Perspective view not accurate? I've been using since I started modeling and it's never given me trouble.
I think what's happening there is more of a general bug rather than a viewport related bug. I can't explain why, but novice modelers usually do something horribly wrong that breaks the mesh... what's happening there may be a vertex ordering related bug. Max is getting confused on where the vertex really exisits so when you select it, it's updated in the wrong coordinates.
Try exporting the mesh to .obj and import it back in and see if that corrects any issues with the mesh. The max file may be corrupt as well so you might want to import it back into a fresh max scene.

Im pretty sure this isnt the case as it happen on every object.. including a cube in a brand new scene.
