First post over here at CGsociety, and I'm looking forward to settling in :) Here's a skyscape image that I'm working on and some advice would be great before I develop it any further..

I was going for an early morning scene, but a few artists over on the ImagineFX and CA forums have said that there appears to be a storm gathering rather than a morning feel, or maybe a forest fire.. if I could get some of your thoughts that would be brilliant :)

Thanks.

Gday Paul. Comes across to me as somewhere between a fire and a storm, heh. If it were a fire I would expect to see orange flames, or a hint of them, somewhere in the trees. Maybe a small orange corona or something.

I think one thing hurting the suggestion of a morning sky is the patch of blue sky near the horizon at the bottom there. Perhaps shift the hue to be a little more pink.

The way that column of dark cloud descends to close to the trees is also working against the suggestion of the piece, I believe. Try culling it back a bit, so it looks more simply like an innocent, albeit dark, cloud floating low. That vertical column also breaks the composition a little.

The far layer of trees appear lighter than the foreground trees, which works slightly to suggest a lightsource off the right of the piece, which seems to tone down the strength of the lightsource from the sun behind them. Maybe gradient the trees down to much darker at their bottom to imply more of a silhouette shading, yet still communicate aerial perspective. Although if you did that they would blend into the foreground trees, so maybe youd have to give a feint sihouette to the foreground trees there, too.

The way those back trees suddenly drop off at their left edge seems a little unnatural, too. Maybe spot a few more after that left edge, or something.

Hmm, that's all I've got. Good luck!

Cheers, I appreciate that :) I'll bare your post in mind when I go back to touch up the image and I'll post my results here, hopefully.

I think I'm gonna work up the forest fire concept and see what I can make of that.
