So can somebody post what's changed, to quench our curiosity until we can watch the pretty moving pictures with people talking about it?

Well, the most important change is completely new gui.
Houdini gui was always "nerd style", and with this new release I think (and hope) Houdini aiming for a new fresh user base. :)

There are literally too many things to mention. However the big things are interface enhancements :
Not to mention, fluids, enhanced renderer, and a bunch of other cool things.

AWESOME!!! :)
Thanks guys. The only thing that would make me happier today would be the OSX release of ZBrush3, oh and an OSX Houdini would be nice too. ;)
H9 looks pretty damned impressive... I'm quite pleased to see the UI improvements, although having become accustomed to the old UI, I hope it doesn't screw with my head too much.
Ok, I'm trying to try it, but it seems that there are some serious issue with text displaying (buttons, everywhere). Is it just me?

There has been an unprecedented flurry of activity today and download times have been slower than desired. It looks like things are getting better. It is great to see such interest in the new version. The more testing the better to ensure a solid H9 release. Please be sure to use the bug report form on the H9 Blog page to let us know more about any issues you are having.

Ouch, I'm sorry; please report your findings to http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewforum&f=24
In the meantime, you might want to try and force it to use software OGL (since it sounds like a graphics card/driver issue). Do this by setting the environment variable HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE to 1.
(Do you know how to do that? What OS are you on?)

I'm on XP... Is this right?

If that's what you meant, nope, does nothing.
I've submitted a bug report, and am hoping that it will be fixed in later builds.
Judging by the screenshots, the UI and workflow has become a bit more direct and user-friendly, and closer to that of other apps. Last time I tried houdini (fairly recently) I got along with it quite well, but it was more tedious than anything else I've used.

Well it worked for me (see previous post about graphics issues).
It's pretty wierd that I have to use software acceleration with my Quadro...
Anyway, SideFX has done impressive work as far as new gui concerned, I love it (besides the fact that it's sluggish).

Anybody else download the video for "Polygon Modeling with Subdivision Rendering" from the blog?
Mine seems to be missing the audio. I already watched one of the other vids and it was fine

it's still early beta...none of the real optimizations have been done...
but be sure to give SESI any feedback...it'll only make things better
Hey guys, have you watched procedural_forest.mov file?
The first step of tutorial is about copying cube over the grid points, does it actually works for you as tutor do? I'm trying to follow the video step-by-step but I end up with 2 copies of cube/grid and nothing else.
In "old" Houdini I used to do this kind of things using node panel, but now I want to master new gui too, so I'll appreciate any help.
EDIT: Ok, I'm doing it old school way using nodes, but still, I'm curious if it's gui/beta fault or mine?

Take a look over at http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=153835 - essentially you couldn't do things as they are in the procedural_forest file but if you download today's version of Houdini you will be able to now!

Thank you very much for the info, I've downloaded 9.0.655 version and using it right now. "Copy" works as expected. :)

How do you write the render output filename in H9 so it saves to numbered frames like frame001.tif, frame002.tif and so on?
Also, does Mantra's PBR mode have a number of light bounces control? I've been poking around and haven't found it yet.
Robert Magee

To pad the numbers you write the output as follows:
<filename>_$F3.tif
The 3 tells you how much padding you want.

frame$F4.tif - will produce zero-padded filenames like that (to a length 4)
Also, does Mantra's PBR mode have a number of light bounces control? I've been poking around and haven't found it yet.
If you look in the Mantra ROP > Properties > PBR, you'll see "Diffuse Limit", "Glossy Limit", etc - these control the number of bounces for PBR.
