I'm thinking of building a new computer based on the Intel Core 2 Quad..but i'm somewhat of a newbe for hardware.. my work day is 70% 3DS 8, 20% CS 2, 10% web, streaming Itunes..i'd like to have all these apps open at once

i hear the term "faster" but what do each componets of a PC make what "faster"???
i.e. if i buy a more RAM i should be able to do what type of tasks "faster" inside 3DS??

CPU-can make what task faster in 3DS??
Video Card---can make what task faster in 3DS??
RAM---can make what task faster in 3DS??
HD speed--can make what task faster in 3DS??

hope this makes sense..

thanks

hi pipjor,

If I correctly understood your question:

CPU-can make what task faster in 3DS?? : mainly rendertimes, obviously the CPU affect also the manipulation of (big) scenes, but the main difference will occurs on render times.

Video Card---can make what task faster in 3DS?? : only on scene manipulation. Video card doesn't affect the render time (except for some solutions like Gelato).

RAM---can make what task faster in 3DS?? : this feature will increase your render speed and scene manipulation (again, mainly for render time) but RAM will affect you only on bigger projects. You will not felt anything on a small project, if you raise your ram from 1GB to 4GB.

HD speed--can make what task faster in 3DS?? : HD speed will affect the general operation of your PC, like opening files, accessing maps, saving files, and also for Virtual Memory, in cases when your RAM is not enough to manipulate the scene to manipulate or render the scene.

I hope that I have clarified your doubts.

>CPU-can make what task faster in 3DS??
Editor and rendering

>Video Card---can make what task faster in 3DS??
Editor

>RAM---can make what task faster in 3DS??
Everything and nothing. With RAM it's more an enough or not situation than a fast/slow one. If you haven't got enough disk swapping will kick in and the systems becomes slower manyfold.

>HD speed--can make what task faster in 3DS??
Nothing. Technicaly a fast disk will make a measurable difference, but you won't notice it. Using one disk for the OS and another for the applications will give you a slight advantage, as does a stripe set. Over all HD speed does not have much of an influence except maybe if you use realy gigantic bitmaps or movie files as textures.

Hope this helps

thanks for your replies...

i have a 5 yr old Dell dimesion 8300 3G Ram, NVida Geforce FX 5200 which has served me well made me approx $300,000 over 5 years but time for it to retire...I mainly do arch vis stuff and some things my current system cant do that i'd like to improve on is..

1. display more than approx 2 high poly Onyx Trees..
2. in smooth + highlights mode things run pretty slow..

can you guys recommend a video card to help with problems 1 and 2

thanks again

The new 8xxx series cards from nVidia would be the ticket. some people recommend the 8800 series as being the pinnacle. You can always move over to the quadro series (fx 3450, for example) for more Poly work.

Verify your mobo adapter. Probably it is an AGP. Maybe change the entire computer should be an option instead investing on a high cost AGP videoboard.
