it looks good so far but if you want crits tell us what you are trying to acomplish, like are you going for a human head or an alien ...

Good rule of thumb: don't add geometry unless you have to!! What you've got now is more than sufficient for making a pretty realistic head-- just get some reference to study for making the forms.

Your mesh looks ok, what you need to concentrate on is, as has already been hit upon, the form of the head.

The best idea would be to get some reference pictures, as many as you can, and study them closely, use them at backgrounds in your 3D app as well, cos it's hella hard to just guess the proportions of the human face, doubly so on the first try.

Are you modelling in Nurbs ? Sorry if thats a silly question. I found that Nurbs are quite hard to model in for a human head if you are just starting. Poly modelling (and SubDs), a a bit easier as you can build up detail more progressively (For me anyway),

Just a thought.

Nurbs? Doubt it... looks more like Lightwave to me.

The curvy lines kinda threw me.

Lightwave models usually look like that-- it's polys, but the program smooths em all nice so you can see the cage AND the final surface at the same time, in a way that's easy to edit. I wish MAX did that. You can usually tell Lightwave from those curvy lines and the faceted look of the spaces between them.

can you draw a head/face? if not chances are you cant model one. learn the dimensions of the face, what planes exist on it, what sticks out where and how far in relationship to everything else. granted no two heads are the same, they are mostly similar. once you have these concepts down then tackle a model, no sense in wasting everyones time telling you things you can learn on your own. best of luck

i disagree you dont necssarilly have to be able to draw a head or face just have a good refernce picture, i do agree though that you should draw out your head design if you can becuase it does really help but it is not required to get good results . it is important like you said though to learn the dimensions of a face that is very important in modeling a head

What I might suggest is that you take a good long hard look at Userdelta's spinshift video tutorial on box modelling heads

http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/modeling/head/

You obviously know the tools for boxmodelling, its just putting them into practice to make the shape you want that may be a problem. The tutorial will help oodles there!
