View Full Version : URGENT! Fiber Optics
hokeypokey 07-09-2007, 03:28 PM Can anyone out there tell me the best way to model and render some nice fiber optics? This will be used around a wire frame globe (already done). These fiber cables will originate in various locations around the US, and extend to various locations throughout the world. Is there a way to use the hair module for this purpose, or is there a better way?

you could probably use the hair to create the initial tubes. but what your going to need renderwise for this to work like actual fibre optics is a refractive transparent material and Caustics.

Yeah, that would work, but I think a simpler shader solution should be adequate too. Maybe a Luminance with a fresnel with a bit of transparency.... If the fibers are to actually affect the lighting on the globe, then are lights set to emit off the spline.
As for the fibers themselves, Hair is great, but depending on how many you've got, Sweeps should suffice too....

This would be a great job for mograph. Do you have Studio? Or Mograph?

totally got sidetracked thinking about this one. so I played for a few minutes, nothing spectacular particularly the shader on the tubes is hideous, and I had to cheat the aiming of the lights since the tangent angle wasn't working right for some reason. hope its of some help though.

Nice one robotbob.... there is also this one which, while not for fiber optic, it does use the hair module for making a dandelion, and with some tweaking it could work great. Best part is that it is a video tutorial, so you will learn technique.
