Hi All,

This is my first real time I'm going to create a face map by painting over a UVW Unwrapped template I made in MAX of my model.

I've so far:
1. Unwrapped the head (using cylinderical projection).
2. Eliminated the distortions with the help of a very nice checker map.
3. Exported my unwrapped template to Photoshop.
4. Went back to MAX and applied a simple procedural map to the face that gives me the general skin tone I want.
5. Baked out the procedural texture and applied it over the texture template in photoshop.

And I've come up with this so far:

(oooh aahh... prruudy ain't it?) :D

So, now - as a reference - I want to find some pictures of unwrapped face textures people have used for their models, kind of like THIS. (http://www.kniffen.ca/index.php?target=tutorials/texture/UV4.php) - just a bit clearer or bigger so I can see how people go about painting these textures... or even a very in depth tutorial with good example pics could help.

I do realize most people wont post their textures up like this in fear of it being stolen/mutated, but I just want to see upclose how textures of this kind are painted.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,

Since I am not a great artist and can not draw and color a realistic head from scratch, here is a technique which I have developed over the past few years.

This assumes you are at least moderatly familular with using layers in photoshop or paintshop pro.

Get a close up photo of a head which has very few shadows on it and add it as a layer underneath your unwrapped mesh. Set your mesh layer to about 50% opacity to be able to see the photo underneath.

Now distort the photo layer to match as close as possible to the features of your mesh. Crop out individual elements, such as the nose and mouth and make them their own layer(s) so it is easier to distort them to fit.

Your choice now is that you can play with opacity, layer overlaying, blending, burning ect.. to make the photo elements blend smoothly with the mesh layer, OR you can use the photo elements as simple guides in coloring on a new layer blank which lays on top of your mesh layer.

The thing to remember is that less is more. Stay away from dramatic colors and shadow lines. It really takes very little to stand out a lot when you finally map it onto your mesh.
