Tune in to the Academy Awards tonight to see Mickey Mouse as a 3D character. According to rumor, he will be presenting an award (best animated feature, perhaps?).

Afterwards, please post your critiques here. Does Mick look good as a CG render? Is this the new definitive Mickey Mouse, or just a shadow of his former self?

How are they going to have him present an award, is going to be shot previously and composited in? I dont see how an animated character can present an award during a "live" ceremony.

Probably that's what they will do. It should be possible provided they stick to a motion control camera. Measures must of course be taken to ensure that his co-presenter does not walk through him on stage. The other option would to animate him live using performance capture technology and render him in realtime. The Jim Henson organization has made great progress in this area. I doubt that Disney would do this, though, given all that could go wrong.

If it happens it's something that has been prepapred beforehand. And it's not new either as Woody and Buzz Lightyear have already presented the animation awards previously.

I hear he's there to beg for alms for Disney's animation department. Eisner McScrooge hasn't been feeding them since Christmas.

Last year Jimmy Neutron, Shrek, Donkey, Sulley and Mike Wazowski (Monsters Inc) where sitting in the audience when the Oscar for best animated feature where announced.
It looked very good.
I thing Shrek even went on the stage ! They showed the “losers” too !

He just presented for Best Animated Short Film (Winner.. The Chubb Chubbs).

He looked ok. A little stiff IMHO and his hands were so large there wasn't much movement in them.

On a humorus note, they showed his age by having him wear reading glasses. :p Still... Looked pretty good for being almost 80 years old.

It looked v.good in my opinion.

However on a pedantic note, i think theres always going to be a problem in doing a 3D version of Mickey as Disney always said (or so I believe!) the ears should be perfect circles that always face camera.

Clearly, they weren't - but still looked cool anyway.. ;-)
