I take it you mean Lighting not Lightning?
Lightning would be the electric discharge during a storm.

If you mean lighting maybe first check the "Bad Render..." Thread in the Tutorials subforum here
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=95&t=404342
Also there is an own subforum on lighting and rendering which may contain some tipps you can use.

Cheers
Björn

quick basic exterior lighting settup -

* in your fresh non-lit scene, put in a sky object and apply a luminance material to it at 100% strength. maybe blue tinge it about 10%.

* put in a infinate light for your sun, at about 75% brightness and a 5-10% yellow tinge. dont forget to switch on shadows.

* turn on gi in the render settings with a diff depth of 1

* hit render.

Do you use a Mograph module? If yes, you can use my SkyLight tool. More you find http://3d.digitalmedia.cz/plugins/skylight

if you are unsure what 'diff depth' is even after i described where it was, that means you either dont have the advanced render module, or your knowlege is too basic for what i'm saying.

if it's the first then you cant use real gi and radiosity. you'll have to fake it using conventional lights. this is a task in itself to get right.

if it's the latter then i'd suggest you do a few basic tuts on gi and radiosity to familierise yourself with it and understand what you want to acheive before you try to achieve it. the manuals and help files that come with C4D will help you out here :)

/edit

i might have miss-read the reply. sorry.

"diff depth" is diffuse depth. in effect it's the light bounce button. i got the impression you were un-aware if it's pressence let alone it's action.
