Hey guys, this is my first post on CgTalk.

I started working on this a while back as just a test project to learn how to do metallic textures, but ended up liking the model and decided to spend some extra time on it to finish it up.

I'm still relatively new to Lightwave, and this is really the only full project I have competed (and not much of one at that).

Any tips as to how to make the metal look more reaistic would be great.

Hi Anoma1y!
Welcome to GgTalk!

That's a nice picture you've got there. Rather photorealistic. My only crit is that you should bevel your edges. This will produce some really nice highlights at the edges and will look more real.

Greetings,
XerC

Thanks XerC! Yeah, i do need to bevel the edges on the big ring, but because of the way i origionally modelled it, doing so would be very hard. I might give it a try later today, though

Sorry about the thread title Sheep Factory, I should know better at this point in my forum life to read the rules.

now, that is an example of photorealism... great job! the wood texture is amazing. The keychain, eventhough a simple model, is still really great.

Man, its great to see that people like it.

Does anyone have know how to add surface scratches and such to the metallic texture? I heard some stuff about using a grundge map, but i dont know how to use one or where to find one.

hey,

i think if you add a "weld" or somthing between the large ring and the first little ring it will look more obviously connected. they may be thouching now but they look seperate

have fun, keep it up

great work did you use a bump map or displacement for the text:beer:

Chaos: yeah, getting the parts of the chain in place was really time consuming. I'll try to iron it out.

ribok: the text is geometry that I subtracted from the ring, using the little lightwave text creation thing.

What about the shadowing? Do you think it would help the image considerably to render it with radiosity?

As of now, doing the shadows with area lights takes about 30 mintues to an hour depending on the resolution. Would the radiosity render time be worth it?

Really nice. What sort of lighting setup did you use? What was it rendered in?

It was modelled and rendered in lightwave without any plugins. I used three large area lights to get the soft shadowing, and an hrdi image without radiosity, which seems to produce more highlights.
