Hello everyone! :)

I'm new here at CG Society. My Name is Cristian Landero and I'm currently living in the southern most country of Central America: Panama. Actually, I've been a registered user since 2006 but since I've been doing photomanipulations (http://drcrane.deviantart.com) for the last 3 years, I've never really posted anything here. Honestly, because I think my skills are not that great. Anyways, a week ago I finally got a Wacom Intuos Tablet and I'm really happy with it and willing to move on to Digital Painting which is something I've been wanting to do for a very long time.

So I decided to come here and post the sketch of what will be my first fully digitally painted work. I say fully digitally painted work because I have been combining digital painting with photomanipulation but I really don't want to do that anymore. Anyhow, here's the sketch:

This is actually a refined sketch from the original. The original one was pretty messy that is why I decided to refine it. At this point I have two versions of my character and I'm not really sure which version I like best. Which one do you like?

My objective is to make a painting that looks somewhat realistic. I'm a detail freak and I really like complexity so that's another objective I have...to focus on details. Even if it takes me days or weeks to get this done...I'm up for it! :thumbsup:

I want to move on to adding colors already, although I know that is not right and I should finish the entire sketch. But that's a little problem I'm having right now. So far I have not used any photos as reference but I know I will, for the fan for example 'cause I have never really drawn one of those fans before.

I've seen some other WIP threads and people here seem to be really nice and give really good advice. So I'd really appreciate if you guys could comment and critic on this work as I make some progress on it. It could really help me on my decisions and were I'll take this piece from here.

And as an end to this first post I leave you with a closeup of her face. It's the part I like the best so far :) So I'm gonna go now and continue working on this. Like I said, I'll probably start adding colors now heh.

OK, so here's what I have so far. I've chosen my colors for both the skin and the colors of the eyes. I want to focus on her eyes first before moving on to the rest of her face. I'm not sure how long it will take me to nail the eyes but right now I have many magazines of women with green eyes on my desk to help me out.

Anyways, here's the image:

hello, it looks like you are off to a good start, the colors you are using in the skin tones are mostly right, and the eyes are looking good, however, the one thing that I would say you should always do is work general to specific, never focus on one area until you have done the same amount of work everywhere else. So not only should you move away from the eyes, but the head and work all over the picture at once. This will give you a much better picture in the end. This keeps you from over working some aspects and under working others. It is looking good though and keep up the good work!

It's definitely looking great.

I agree with Lah, you need to work all over to make sure it all "gels".

For the skin palette you might want to add a cool color into the mix to give your warms a bit more intensity. You can Linda Bergkvist's tutorial on that and her thoughts behind it [here] (http://www.furiae.com/popup.php?text=skintutorial)

@Lah: Thanks for the advice :) I'll consider it from now on.

@eclipse115: Thanks for the tip and link :)

I'm done with the eyes though. Actually, I don't know if they are completely done but I'll leave them like this for now. I also changed the skin palette a tad bit 'cause the skin was looking too pale.

@TryForce: Thanks!

@Byren: Thanks! I'm glad you're liking it :)

So I've changed my mind and decided to do a quick sketch on top of the original one. Please don't laugh at my cat lol.

Meow? lol It's alice and the cheshire cat!

Joking aside, I love how you handled her eyes. Where did you learn how to do that?

@Nigh7shad3: Believe me, I have no idea :shrug:

But I'm kinda getting tired of this painting. It's looking nothing how I want it to :sad:

then put it aside in the old hard drive and have a beer :P

come back and revisit it some other time with fresh eyes

Also, for instant fresh eyes, see my sig. :)

But yea, take a day off or so. When you go into heavy detail prematurely you have a greater tendancy to burn out then if you go through the rendering process in order. One big thing to bare in mind also is that by going into such heavy detail so early, is all of that work can be negated at a later time due to an outside element dropping a shadow or something. It is a painful thing to erase a section you spent 2 days working on because some hair cast a shadow over it.

Take a day off, go doodle something random and come back to the painting in a day or two and see where you can go from there.
