I have been practicing with C4D and have run into a stumbling block. I can not seem to find any definitive info on how to solve this problem and was hoping someone here could shed some light on it.

The picture below illustrates what I am up against. The main part of the visor on the helmet keeps coming up as two extruded pieces regardles if I have PRESERVE GROUPS checked. No matter what I do there are certain functions that create an edge poly (see the division in the middle of the visor). I have tried several methods to get rid of it. I have attempted to delete the offending polys but what usually happens is a nasty little gap is left. I have tried to bridge the gap, make polys out of the gap, move the points, weld etc. At best I can only achieve a harsh line in the middle where the two eges meet. What I want is a continous, smooth surface across the visor with no line down the middle. What is the best way to do this? I know this is probably par for the course but I am at odds on how to fix it. Thanks for your help.

Try this:
Select all points in question -> under Structure -> Edit Surface-> Set Value ->x=0

Thanks PIT but that didn't seem to work. It just makes the remaining points extrude off into the distance to a vanishing point. The problem there I think is that the inside corners of the perpendicular polys share a common point so I can't adjust it without affecting it's neighbor.

Here is a pic of the wireframe:

And here is a general example of the problem I am trying to avoid or fix. I know there must be a way around this.

YouŽll have to delete the extra polys youŽve got there and then set the points to 0 on X. That will solve the problem.

Marked the polys on your screenshot.

Turn the symmetry off for a moment. look at the model form the side so you are looking into the inside of the model. see the ploygons that are there on the side they must be deleted.

Darn you beat me to it.

Woohoo! Thanks Pit! That did it. So what exactly am I doing when I set X to zero? Am I instructing C4D to place the point exactly at position zero on the X axis?? Here is the fixed model.

That is correct Menta. When you extrude in Cinema the extrude is perform along the normals. This may not be perfectly perpendicluar to your object so polys are created on the sides of the extrude.

So deleting the newly created side polys and selecting those points and using the set command puts them back at the x axis.

You might want to do an optimize at this point to clear up any extra points this method creates.
