Hi,
I really suck in texturing and I'd like to improve myself.
One thing I really don't understand is specularity . I use Maya and there are 2 options : specular color and specular rolloff.
My question is : how do you paint specular textures for a head ? what color ? Well I need to know everything ! :p

Thanks for help or eventually tutorials link.

Yoda!!

Specular maps require no color information. Just like the bump map in a specular map dark color tones have a negative influence therefore causing the specularity to have a lower specular reflection value in those areas and lighter areas have a positive influence witch will make those areas have a higher specular reflection value, in maya you would apply this to your specular roll off attribute. With that in mind, when making the head you could make areas such as around the lips, lips, around the eyes, tip of the nose more specular (higher value) and at the same time you could give other areas a less specular ammount for example if it's a male you could the areas with facial hair or shaved areas less specular (lower value).

As for the specular color, it is a paramter were you can map certain color values to the specular reflections in that area, for example if for some reason you want the specular reflections/highlights in that area to have a green tint than you could simply make that area green in the specular color map or apply a plain green color to the specular color and that will make all the spcular reflection green in the entire object.

Hi !
Thank you for your clear explanation, I think specularity has no longer secrets to me now :p
I knew it was something very important for getting realisting faces but I didn't really know how it worked.

YOU are the real Yoda, I'm just one of your pale copies
