Hi,

We were asked by a manufacturer of float and manufactured glass to render (stills) their different glass types for customer viewing instead of sending them real samples.

We are faced with the following 2 problems:

1. The clients wants the glass samples presented to be like real life with all the properties of the glass type (color, refraction, reflection, ...), using the Y a b variables provided by the client, which are composed of the transmission, reflection film side and reflection glass side variables (see below).

We have no clue as how and where to transpose these variables in C4d.

2. The client wants the glass samples to be shown on a neutral background or a background similar to this example they've sent us :

We believe this limits the possibilities to render the glass as in real life. We suggested the client to opt for different rendering using a neutral background, HDRI reflection as well as different light sources.

Any help on the Yab issue would be appreciated.

If you are an expert in glass rendering, kindly send me a pm. We will get back in touch with you.

Thanks,
Smalco

If you're an expert in glass rendering, feel free to inform us on the forum as well ;-)

If spectral (wavelength based) refraction is really important, then it's possible you have to turn to another render engine. C4D's engine does not support it.

Thirdeye knows glass rendering in Cinema4D I believe, maybe ask him?

Good Luck!

I know i don't like how C4D renders glass without a proper refraction channel. If i had to render some proper glass in C4D i'd use an external renderer like Maxwell or Vray. Dunno about finalRender, never used it, but all the glass samples i've seen coming from it looked rather poor. Probably if physical correctness is what is needed here i'd go with Maxwell, there's a downloadable demo if needed.

Final Render should be able to handle this as well no problem.
This is more due to the fact that many users still are learning how to deal the material parameters.
The next release will be adding a lot of functionality to the shader (BRDF...) and make it a lot easier to setup FR materials...

If somebody(c4d' programmer) looks at http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=176&t=468594 and re-works export-scripts to sunflow render..
...so some glass-shader's examples(same in attach):

code sample-Glass Shader
Glass Shader
Code:
shader {
name sfgla.shader
type glass
eta 1.0
color { “sRGB nonlinear” 0.800 0.800 0.800 }
absorbtion.distance 5.0
absorbtion.color { “sRGB nonlinear” 1.0 1.0 1.0 }
}
The “eta” is more commonly known as “ior” or index of refraction.
