View Full Version : Maya animation/rigging
Solve 03-23-2003, 04:23 AM I was wondering if their were any Maya animators or riggers that don't write scripts or use the "programming" aspects of Maya.
Programming really intimidates me and it's hella hard to learn and I want to animate/rig regularly without having to go into the expression editor and writing scripts.

Animating and rigging is where you will find (maybe) the most scripting being done. When you get the hang of it, MEL is pretty darn easy to learn. I wouldn't say it is intuitive, but it is the most useful tool you will want to know. Learning it will open a completely new doorway into Maya.
But in answer to your question, I'm sure there are a few animatiors out there that don't take advantage of MEL. But I think they are limiting themselves in a huge way.

I'm still a student in CG and I used to rig and animate all my characters without MEL scripting.
However it's true that I start facing problems for complex rigs and animations now. That's why I've just bought MEL Scripting For Maya Animators to learn MEL.

*sigh*
That sucks. I really don't want to learn how to write scripts or MEL but if it makes things easier i have no choice. :thumbsdow

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. There isn't any scripting involved in it either. But you'll find that after you build a couple of these things by hand, you'll spend less time doing them if you have a series of MEL procedures do all the work for you.
