View Full Version : Realistic Coffee Table
Jozvex 03-23-2003, 02:23 AM Hi, to help learn Mental Ray for Maya I'm making a coffee table with an assortment of things on it.
At the moment I have a glass of drink (maybe lemonade?) and......a glass turtle statue.
The glass turtle is just for the sake of it. I won't keep it there.
I'm going for photorealistic, what do you think so far? And what else should go on the table?

thats looks pretty sweet:) nice work with mental ray too, are you going all out (FG+GI+Caustics) ?
My only crit would be that the reflection is pretty strong even for a glossy finished table. As far as things to add, I'd put a coaster under that drink and perhaps my favorite magazine (slightly used) laying to one side. And perhaps an out-of-focus (DOF) pic for the background as opposed to black.
just do 3d

good start! I would like to see the straw coloured black because the bright blue looks too cg. The black straw would look dodgy with a black background but when you get a background in it will look quality. Things you could add to the scene could include
ashtray, lighter, paper (newspaper, documents), mobile phone, keys, loose change, cd's, vase of flowers, ornament's (japanese stones, small greek statue, paperweight), thinking of ornaments their are lots of little japanese sculptures of men fishing, practising martial arts that look really cool, I think these would look nice in you scene but I think ive gone off track a bit. If you'd like more idea's id gladly help
some how I am thinking that the reflection on the coffe table is a little bit too blured.
nice pic. but a good back ground would probibly make this blur unoticable

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
Yeah the background will make a big difference I think. I actually haven't used FG, GI or Caustics at all! The only 'special' thing is Mental Ray's glossy reflections.
Now off to make changes...

Ok, here's an update.
I added a background, added keys, made the straw less blue, made the table less reflective and got rid of the turtle hehe.
It has no shadows though because they make the glass look completely different. I think for the final image I'll render out a shadow pass and add it in Photoshop.
Next up I think I'll add a magazine or two. And maybe some drops of lemonade on the table that have fallen from the straw.

yeah that looks alot better, nice work! I think the shadows will definitely help alot, look forward to seeing them (the keys look a little odd without the drop shadow). I really like the way you handled the carbonated liquid in the glass -- nice.
the only other thingthat struck me was the glossy surface of the table itself. It seems almost too perfect. I'm thinking that even nicely finished glossy tables have some slight surface irregularities (ie small pits and bumps). Its something you'd notice when seeing the specular highlight off a table in real life.. just a slight surface texture. well food for thought, I wish I could articulate it better
:wip:

Thanks Jason, I think it looks a lot better too now.
You're right about the keys looking odd without the shadows. The bubbles in the water are particles that have spheres instanced to them.
And about the table perfectness, you're right again! I would have added the bumps and dents earlier but Mental Ray's current glossy shader doesn't support bump mapping! I'll have to think about that one a bit more.
Thanks for the feedback once again!

Another update:
I added the magazine, the area shadows (man they slow down the rendertime by like 500% or more!), a drip to the end of the straw and a splotch of drink onto the table under the straw.
You can't really see the drips in the version here, because I shrunk the image to keep to the 20k limit.
