Hi Everyone, this is my first concept, the idea is a urban portrait of a big minotaur-bison warrior waiting for the bus to go to the battlefield, and the office hottie he meets there. Now, i want the girl to look like she's really flirting at him, so i'm thiking of changing de pose and expresion a bit, if you have any imput on it please let me know! i specially have trouble with composition since the bison is so big, but i thik it would be cool if the comp sinks to the lower center just like the bench so he looks really heavy, how bout' that?
Best luck to everyone!!

OK, as i said i've been wondering about the girl so here are various models of her in different versions i went through, left to rigth:
-cartoony
-oriental mmmmm
-school girl
-Pam! (from the office)
-this is the alternate version of the original and i will paste her with the bison to se how she looks.
well so many options and i feel a little lost so, as always if you have a word on it plaese let me know!

Wow she looks good to me...
Something funny hapened: the first one was supposed to represent the very moment the bison sits and bends the bench hence driving the girl towards him, in this second one it seems that it happened already and the girl had a little time to cuddle agains him and start playing with his fur, good or bad? i don't know at this point.. heck, it's just a sketch! i'll be going for the good one in the coming days so i'm taking all suggestions...

07-09-2007, 06:32 AM
This is better :) She's definitely looking more specifically flirtatious. You might also try a sketch where she's turned slightly toward him, staying braced on her right hand (as she is now) but with her left hand reached across her body to twirl around his arm hair.
I still can't help but chuckle at the fact that, in this Strange Behavior Challenge, the fantasy bison warrior waiting on a bus is the one playing the serious character :D

If you try lifting her right hand's pinky finger straight towards the beast, almost touching his left arm fur, keeping the rest of her hand as is, it could add a subtle but effective flirtyness..
Great drawing style, I love it. I like your concept too. I think there is someone else that's doing beauty and the beast kind of concept too though.
best of luck

I was so bored doing a scene for a history book, nothing but soldiers, so i shoved it away and went right to put some color on this thing....
It's just a dummy not the real thing, but it shows the kind of light i want, it is a exterior scene so i'll put all kinds of colorful reflections, but softly so nobody has to notice at first.
Hope you like it....

Hi Gabriel,
Very nice sketch, your idea its lovely and I like so much the style for your characters, and also the way to play for the real world to the extraordinary world, my only suggestion in the idea will be , that the strange behavior its not to strong still since I expect something flirty from a cute girl like your character, and more to a big poweerfull guy.... I hope to see more from your wonderful art and will support you, I mean talent its you! Congratulations!

I think the strange behavior is the minotaur as a commuter. Maybe you can play up to that a little more. *edit- maybe he's holding a map to a village he's going to raid, etc.
I like the sense of movement and weight from the sketch of him "just sitting down" and her sliding towards him. Maybe one of her legs can kick in the air and her shoe fly off her foot to show how off balance she is. It might also help to change her expression to more alarmed.
I like the way it looks now but these are just some thoughts . Great splash of color ;)
Sovica
07-10-2007, 09:42 PM
Well... I think the composition is good... it's not that dramatic, but this way the illustration focuses on the story told. So I wouldn't change it.
But maybe you could play around with the girl a bit more...? Right now, you can't really tell any more that she slid twards him and bumped against him (she's too relaxed). I would try to stress that more. You know: he just sat down, she bumped in him from the bending of the bench, so she is surprised a bit, but also likes it =)
If you can catch such an expression you're a pro =D
I'll stay tooned,
Good luck =)
Hey Gabriel. Really a nice concept and great sketches. I keep any eye on the progress of your idea  . Mucha suerte y un saludo !!!

hehe, I love your sketches, I think I'm really going to like this illustration when its finished...
about the copmposition, maybe I would try to cut a tiny bit from the bottom and extend the canvas another bit to the top and the sides, I don't know, I don't know how composition works but that's what your image tells to my eye...
Mucha suerte! :)

Fantastic drawing, I like it a lot. It's a lot like my own stlye and thank you for using blue :buttrock:
The posing of the bison is perfect, and the only thing I might try is moving the girls left arm so her hand is on her knee. I think it would make her look even more flirtatious, and make an even better silhouette. And the only other small thing I would change at this point would be to clear up the area around the lower leg and bench. The way it is now is kind of confusing where exactly the corner is and how she is sitting on it.
Otherwise, fantastic job, I love to see drawings in this style, and I can't wait to see the next steps.
SteevieWoo
07-13-2007, 07:21 AM
OH thanks for this, you all are great help!
as i said I'll do a little explanation on my piece so here it comes:
Well it was made to show a contrast in many ways, first the ovious difference of gender size, occupation, and well... species, but also, contrast of attitude, Bison here is the obvious weirdo but he turns out to be shy and embarrassed cause' of the public furnture destruction he made, which i think is very natural, i'd be.....
Now as Axel points it is to expect from a pretty gal like her to come and flirt to a big hunky guy, yes. but it is a big, hairy, mutant, chimeric, anthropomorphic barbarian bison,
The fact that you can find her attitude so natural brings me to the point that started it all for me: I want to show that, In a way, the natural reaction of this real life girl could be the stragest thing in the scene.:D
Yeah all that, and i really wanted to draw a sexy girl.
I'll post an alternate version of my sketch tomorrow night, in preparation for the good one!
See you around!

WOOW Finally, this is an almost completely redone sketch of bison and the chick, watching some bus shelter photos from many places of the world i stumbled upon a new type of bench that would crush in a different way, hope you like it!!
I also exagerated the bison's posture and from that worked an all new girl, i tried to follow all of those good hints from all of you.(THANKS A LOT!!)
Please let your voice be heard! i don't know what face i like the most just now, so...................
killer-instinct93
07-14-2007, 07:40 AM
I think I like the other face better, but it depends on what you're going for. If you want the flirtier girl, I think the first one fits that much better.
And I looooove the changes you made to the bench and her position. It really looks like shes falling towards him now, rather than just leaning up against him. I think the subtle things like the show falling off, and oh my goodness are you ever good at hand poses.
Fantastic work
Jeffparadox
07-14-2007, 10:09 AM
You could try to give a little more prspective and bleed the right side of the bus stop out of the frame a bit, it could help the composition, not sure.
Another great drawing, it's just fun to see different versions, though i feel like the beast's expression was funnier in the first one. Other than that I think this has a much more dynamic feel. Can't wait for color!
do you sketch in PS btw, or with blue pencil on paper? it has a traditional look : )
SteevieWoo
07-14-2007, 06:42 PM
Tkanks! so far we have one vote for the the former girl, keep it coming!!
Hede And Killer: Yes, i'm using a good old col-erase dark blue pencil (i believe Faber-Castell makes em' now). My boss used to provide me with em', since he got more into b5 pencil. But i slowly ran out of em' and they're damn hard to get here in Mexico, so i'm using my last two for this competition. you know, for luck.

Nice work so far...! Your new pose feels as if it's still in motion, as though he'd just sat down and the bench had just busted. Given that, I like the poses and expressions that have more motion and surprise to them. For example, I love the second girl's face/pose, but don't think it would work so well with your new composition. The 4th one, with a look of surprise on her face, might work better in this new shot.
Just my thoughts on them, seeing as you were still looking for input on those poses. Good luck and have fun...!
Great sketck, the sensation of weight of the bison is obtained very well
I think your other chick is more sexy (más zorrona... hahahha), and the minotauro ( o bison) has a little innocent expression, and maybe this is the strange part, the chick is the wolf and the bison warrior is the sheep :)

Hola Gabriel,:)
Uuhh !ok I like more this sexy girl with her glasses, add more the strange factor to me.. I like how you bend more the bus sit, as well the exaggeration of the composition it’s looking great! I love the silhouettes very easy to read what going on! Fantastic!..
About your reasons, I understand your point, and I think it’s a really cute concept, and great to see it, in your style! And as long as you are having fun, We will see that as well! Although, we already are!
I hope to see more upgrades, of this great concept!:scream:
Take care!

So many new entries! always pushing back, don't get me wrong, is great, I gotta get faster!!!
Oh, sorry for that fit, feelin' better now, yeah! So here's another (and right now the final) version of sweet flirting girl, which i'm still to name by the way. Once pasting her with the bison and adequately tracing the background i'll be ready to go. Right now i feel it's taking forever so tell me what you think, i tried once again to incorporate as much of the input received as possible. Hope you enjoy!!
hehe dont worry i got a subscription this one is going to kick butt. close in style to walrus's piece at least right now anyways. :) great work here.

HOW ABOUT THE BRUNETTE LOOK by the way?
I like her, mostly because the bison's hair is gonna be brown so for contrast, you know.....
I tried to stick close to the second one (the last color sketch) that many said was their favorite.
Well me too on that one!!
Thanks everyone for all!!
save yourself the hastle, if the bison's hair is gonna be darker the the blonds i think it would be a perfect contrast. light against dark work well. and in this case i stand by that.

Looking nice, Gabriel! The only suggestions that I can see to offer is on the feet and shoes, which could use some subtle tweaking. For example, the heels on the 2 shoes are 2 different sizes... pick one. (Myself, i like the thinner stilettos.) Her heel on the screen-right foot looks a bit large... in fact, you could experiment with daintier feet all the way around, perhaps. On the screen-left foot, you may not need that part of the shoe to the right of the foot - maybe just make it more of a profile shot. These are all really small, trivial little nit-picks, but honestly, they're the only thing I can see to comment on. Everything else is lookng terrific! She looks really nice... I can tell you must be a Phil Foglio fan! :)
Keep it coming...

07-19-2007, 05:33 PM
yes, it's looking great!
for me, maybe I would have given her some warmer colors, she is too blue for my taste, but maybe after coloring the rest of the scene everything matches perfectly... maybe you can make the contrast between the bison and her with the b/w level, and keep everything in warm colors? I don't know, it's my only sugestion, I really enjoy your style of drawing... :)

people you had to notice:p.
Gord-MacDonald : Great pencils, Kick ass as well, Thanks!

flatten them with base colors and take them for a ride on painter, although the
will disappear in the end , too bad:shrug:.
Dissipation : Solid is such a nice word in this business, i hope i deserve it........
element5 : Thanxz and i hope to see you here often!

So i just decided i'll never decide about the girl (Which now is named Sweet Rita, from a fusion of Zorrita [thanks Ferx] and Sweet Rhea[Thanks kikomunar]), i will just start the color and change her and make variations on the way, there is time, no?
No?... i think i'll finish it on time.... it can be done right? ..... Allright now i don't know!:banghead:

Hola Gabriel,
{ Zorrita jajaja te pasas } well love the primary colors you have in your palette very well complemented, and dark hair seem the right choice for Rita, also I have a suggestion were the clothing seem perfect for a high class “wana be” executive, and the have that kind of wardrobe, so try to give it some texture on her jacket and skirt maybe a small pattern that complement colors as well, kind of like the Jacky O. look…witch in my opinion, is also more unlikely to be flirting with a big hairy beast guy!

Yep, can't stay inside the lines... but I like this stage of sketching because nothing is too wrong that you can't fix it. this is only a color scheme test, my final shadow preview will come soon. Oh! since this is for the web i went all crazy and used a green hue for the background i know would never survive printing, but this if one of few times for me that i don't give squat! Feels so good, mmmmh!
O.K. maybe too crazy, if you feel the green is too aggressive or just screws up your peepers just lemme know!

I really like the way that came out, looks a lot like watercolour. It really works with your drawing style.
As for the green, I personally like it. I think you have to use a solid colour as the backdrop, not clear glass. I think red would be cool, but maybe would be too dominant, blue doesn't often go well with midtones like skin, fur and steel. I think green works really well.
Personally, I've looked through dozens of these entries now, and I'd have to say at this point yours would be the clear favourite.

Hey great update Steevie, I'm loving this water color effect too. I've got nothing against the green, I think it's powerful actually. Though I'd test it a little before I'd go far with it, imho it looks like there's a little too much of it now, or too much of the same tone. When I like a powerful color like that in my paintings I tend to immediately test it with a few different tones and the alternatives of that color - in this case it could be blue I guess - just to double check myself that I'm really digging that color before I invest too much on it. You could also try to play with certain panels of the bus stop, and see how they'd work with that green. Again, just some ideas, it's looking great...
The warm sun and the green light are playing beautifully on the beasts head, along with the cast shadows very nice job already, we need more frequent updates! : )

The bright green of the bus stop could work, especially if you bring more similar cool tones into the rest of the background - distance blues and foliage greens to help push the entire background into the cool range.... Does the car on the left really need to be red? And then conversely, pump up the warm tones of the foreground characters. For example, stronger warm colors for the wood handle and the fur. Maybe a red skirt instead of blue? Metal can be a lot of different colors - don't fall into the trap of thinking that the axe has to be white because it's silver, try adding some warm rust tones.
Anyhow, all just ideas. You have plety of time, so as Jess wisely suggested, experiment with colors before comitting to anything. Good luck!
Hola Gabriel. I liked your "painting by numbers" .
As it is a previsualization I will risk to say that the hair of the girl would have to be black (you can reflecte better the green colour and the sun light in her hair if be a darker colour, only an opinion :) ) About her jacket and skirt I agree with Walrus, maybe a red brilliant colour work well ( and red and black are the femme fatale colours ... :D ..... or a mexican pink tone... dont know ...thinking aloud :) )

Painting inside the lines is overrated; it's merely the last decrepit strand of control for exasperated primary-school teachers :P
Oi, man, has this grown in my absence. It's vastly more dynamic than your original sketch, and I for one can get behind the green. I'd go with Walrus's idea to make her skirt red, unless it conflicts too much against the green. Red symbolizes passion and excitement and hunger; all those fun naughty-girl emotions that go in with her character. Also, just for the sake of realism (....Well.. Real-world-ism), I might suggest a little clutter on the ground. Cigarette butts, empty fast-food boxes, crumpled sofa cans, what-have-you. No bus-stop I've ever seen is that pristine.
At any rate, this is looking awesome. Can't wait to see what you do with it next!

Hi Gabriel, I've seen your thread a while ago and I'm here after your stop to my thread, sorry for that. The sketch, concept and designs are all very well. As I seen, by the comments and your well done work you've progressed so far in a best way. Best of luck and fun! Where you take this scene will be very impressive.
By the way would you mind if I suggest something too, as Walrus told may be if you turned the girls skirt into red would be more contrast to the bacground. See you!

Sooooooo.. i made some changes to my color scheme and just because I'm such a dummy I made another version of Rita. now i did not have time left to paste her with the rest but I think she looks so fine on a white background that i couldn't resist to share with you! This time I pulled out my old Elvgren pin-up book and tried to put as much as i could of those beautiful ladies into this one. Hope you like her, and if you don't well, no worries! remember i won't have a definitive version of her until the day I upload the 'Final image milestone'.
Wow, sounds so far away still.... So much fun!
Well, I hope you like the red, cause' I sure do (you all were right). The red jacket didn't work for me because she looked like a cinema employee or something..... Meh, we'll see.
Sorry for the ruff color, I left my stylus back at work, and my muose doesn't love me anymore....

Hola Gabriel,
I really like this new version of Rita, she got that spicy element that might hit better in my opinion what I thought of strange on her and here latest victim, sort of speak, I love the Vintage jacket assets a more sophisticated mood to her ! And it does look great on white Back ground!
Well so far the expressions it’s the only one I love it but need to push it more for the flirty part with not so much innocence maybe! But that’s just a spectator’s point of view, not crucial at all!

Well Gabriel you have blown my socks off here, there is some great work on these threads but this one is really doing it for me, sorry not to post before, I only just came across your thread.
As for crits, everything I would have said has been done by you based on others suggestions... glad you have decide to go with the red skirt and blonde hair, boy she is sooo sexy with a cracking pair of legs! One of your earlier sketches seemed to capture a slightly more embarassed expression on the bison which I thought to be quite comical, I think I also prefer the previous girl in the full sketch to this latest - particularly her hand posture. All that said I think with the progress you are making I am certain you will settle on the perfect moods for both your characters.
Love the green, get rid of the pink/red car as Walrus suggested, maybe yellow?
You are onto a winner here me thinks!
All the very best mate

ok, just a tiny suggestion concerning facial expression of the girl -
did you consider a surprised look, i.e. 'ooooooo hello, big boy!'

so slightly wider eyes, less of like she intended to slide along the bench, more a pleasant shock.

Sorry it took me so long but I'm back to the second half of the process,(the one we all like most, of course). Yep, things are to be done carefully from now on, and this is the start.
So, using Banishing Point I remade the bus stop and added a nice tiled floor which is gonna be embellished with some garbage later on, as soon as I get my printer running I will get it down on paper and add the ALMOST definitive versions of Rita and Billy, and we will start to see some Painter smudging at last.
Thank you all frequent visitors and new ones too!!, You all help me a lot as I fathom into the process and lose a fresh point of view more and more. You Know that feeling... Maybe I'd flip it Jeff! :)...

Geeez... Bisons are like walking carpet samplers... they have all kinds of fur on em', many colors too. thankfully there are close up pics of every part of a bison you could imagine on the web, even the eyelashes. Lucky me!! .....
Well, Here's the first Teaser of Billy's fur!!
Nah, actually I had to crop it that much because it doesn't look good from far away just yet.
I used a sampled brush with a little scattering to make a base furry texture, then I'm passing with lighter colors everytime, eventually it will be good enough to show as a whole. for mow, just a little WIP. don't worry if the expression looks a little different, I'll fix it later.

To add a constructive comment IMHO I`m not sure about the green/blue background. Just doesn`t fit with the bisons browns for me. maybe some pastels not so saturated colors...
Anyway I`m looking forward for next fantastic updates :bounce:

TwinSnakes: I hope Billy looks now not so young as you suggested, Thanks!
hollietree: I will make a combination of previous expressions for the final so it will go in the direction you point, Thank you for the tip!
Sovica: Your post started an avalanche of people asking for more air on the canvas, so it will be there in the final! Thanks a lot!

Icedeyes: Thanks a lot buddy, i'm fixing that eye for sure, maybe it was the wink that caused that.

Jeffparadox: Yes I know the bus stop looks a little too stiff but I hope in the end all that detail goes ignored and just does it's part as mere props, the good stuff will be sitting right in front!!:D the hair is all is one layer, I just passed a little dodge tool in the end.

It's all and only the different hair effects that I'm working on right now, there's no shadow values as it should, not much atention to the expression, no projected shade and just a little bluish reflection, that all can be added later (that lazy I am) but I wanted to show this so you can tell how the fur works for you. Like the colors?
The hair of the legs should seem more thick, a little more wooly in the next post. I'm also having trouble with a dark, straight haired collar that older bisons have, you can see a little indication of it over Billy's noggin but I don't like it much, maybe I'll just ignore it....
So, all crits are more than welcomed, I also posted responses to later posts if you want to take a look ;)
Hey Gabriel, I really like the Billy's fur, is a totally bison fur! great and awesome my friend!! I think the fur over the head is a bit lighter and make the sensation of a blond fur, but like you say, no sahades on the painting. I like the brown red tone of the Billy's face fur. On the legs are the same blond fur tone because the light, but i think the bison fur is more difuse and almost nothing specular..... mmmm i'm thinking on a photorealistic approach... hahahah... forgets what I said :D ... briefly :D I really like Billy´s fur, awesome work my friend!!

aaw! They are looking more real romantic corny couple (in the best way) yay! :scream:
Love the texture it’s forming already for the fur, although I had still the impression of the animal and still not so much of the character, maybe if he were a bit more grayish, silvers, and blues. And for her more warm colors just to shake color palette’s spectassions up a bit more! And I know it’s far from the normal way of the Minotaur! But that’s something I wouldn’t expect, so might give a path to different ideas from your great imagination! :arteest:
And can’t possibly escape from telling you, about his nose its great! Love the doggy nose squishy texture hehe…Great Work! As always Gabriel:thumbsup:

Because I think the word 'FUR' hasn't been repeated in this page enough. :DAnd let me say tanks for the nice comments I keep getting, I really feel like the good stuff is finally showing, I mean, it's been so long since I started sketching it that I felt a little lost in my perception of what it will look like in the end, now is coming back to me, which is very nice!
Now let me explain, Yes Fer, the idea I had was to show Billy as a blonde, Mainly because black fur is not much fun and my first tests with darker colors didn't look right, I'm planning to post a brunette version of Billy, just in case, but as Jeff pointed, I'm gonna use a lot of hair tones so he doesn't look boring, and the legs being blonder are part of the plan. I also included a sort of gradient (Is hard to notice now) on the arms, they go from brown on the shoulders, then reddish, then I plan to make the hands way darker. This sweet Photo was my inspiration:
http://aycu30.webshots.com/image/27229/2004688168924107864_rs.jpg
Seeing the photo you will say: 'Hey, the fur there looks different here!!' but I'm grabbing things from many pictures, and they vary a lot from each other. That kind of hair on Billy's arms was taken from a pic of an older bison, but that one is all black and dark, dusty brown, Who wants that? that would suck all the light from the picture.
Axel, Thanks for the comment on the nose, I like it too, I think it's gonna be darker still, but I will follow what I have right now. Steve, I'm glad you like the chemistry between them, once I get into the eyes and expression, its gonna be all about it! and as Icedeyes said the picture looks a bit too sharp because I pushed the contrast up at the moment of saving the JPG, I don't think it was necessary now.
And Sadrak, you flatter me a lot, Moebius Is mad about detail but in his very personal way. Damn, He rocks! As for the Blueberries reference, I'm a little lost there, It would be great if you give me a link to some of that art, I googled for Blueberries art but I keep getting pictures of pie.
Marco. Carlos and Mark, thank you very much for your comments!!

Here you are.
Your doodling skill is very impressive.
Like everybody else I like your idea too. Thus, here’s my two cents:
1. I think it would be cool to make the girl’s dress look more corporate looking attire to give a drastic contrast between uncivilized and civilized beings.
2. Background color is too bright
All the rest are great.
Cheers.

Nothing Big, I promised I would post a brunette Billy and since I didn't have much else to show (I'll have time tomorrow so expect a better post soon) I decided to leave you this one so you can pick your favorite and please let me know.
The right one also has a less saturated fur on the other hairy parts for a more realistic approach to bison colors.

Hey and by the way!.......
Thanks cabertevon for your kind comments Yes, the GREEN is still a subject of controversy around here, but have in mind it will be a translucent hue over the background so I'm hoping most of the bright color will mix with it and look less crazy. I'm really looking forward to reach that point and see what happens..........
And Juan pablo! ¿Que onda por ahi? I'm so blushed .. Hey gracias!:D I'm glad you see good fit with the 'strange' theme, sometimes I still wonder if it was weird enough from the start, so you give a rest to those obsessive dreams. Thank you again!

Que pasión Gabriel?? :D I still impressed with Billy´s fur , awesome work my friend!! :applause:
About colour for Billy , i like more the right one. I think a darker colour like that can be a great contrast with Ritas´s blond hair ( reminds me "Karate kid" when Daniel show to Mr. Miyagi his photo with the blond girl - i dont remember her name- and Miyagi says there is balance between both:wise: :D ) Again great work Gabriel san !! :D

I like the one on the left more - it feels more natural. THe one ont eh right doesn't just look dark-haired... the colors on his head are so much more desaturated from the rest of the fur that it doesn't really even feel like they go together, at least to me. Just my thought on it... Good luck!

Nevermind if you see Rita's eyes a bit weird, is because of the eyelashes I forgot to fix...
Just here to ashamedly show you the big mess of a file I'm working on tonight.
It's a 21 layer baby and most of em'I don't even know why are still there, but I'm too chicken to trow em' away just now. By the way my new canvas (extra space at the upper right included)is 13x9 inches at 300 DPI, you think that's a good resolution? I have noticed some of the originals around are very very big and close ups are so crisp, so I started to wonder, since most of my professional work is way smaller and with this kind of fancy pics I never stop to think too much about an exact size...
I could boost it up now that nothing is too sharp yet, so ... What do you think?
Thanks for still posting even when I havent show nothing really interesting in the last two weeks, that shows you care...... aaaaw! :)
mdavid
09-22-2007, 02:36 PM
Great to see you still powering on buddy. Lookin' really good.
As for how big to make your file, I guess that's something only you can decide. It depends on how you like to work and what you plan to do with your artwork. 13 x 9 inches at 300 dpi is plenty of resolution for filling a glossy A4-sized page.
Some reasons why you might want to go even larger could be:
to print it even bigger. For example, a high-quality poster-sized print
to give you the opportunity to crop some of the image and still publish it at a decent size
or you might simply prefer working at high-res. Some kinds of fine brush work, for example, can be easier at high resolution
One reason why you might not want to go bigger:
because it'll slow down your computer. Remember that every time you double the image dimensions, you multiply the number of pixels by four, with an equivalent increase in file size and memory usage
Hey you probably already know all this stuff...
SteevieWoo
09-22-2007, 07:48 PM
Hey Mark, How's the hippie tripping going?
Yeah, I know some of this but I get a little unconfident since I've never been commissioned to work on a piece like these we're doing. Most of my work is for text books and image size is always 5x7 or so to be printed even smaller, that's a big difference; and working on Rita's pupils I started to notice the pixels, that was when I decided to ask to the Pros.
Do you crop your close-ups from a whole render or you render just the part you want to show? It is exactly posts like yours that always look so detailed that make me wonder if my res is a bit low.
It's just like you say, damn computer always growling and showing their teeth to me!
But I have a whip.....
Thanks a lot!
mdavid

Do you crop your close-ups from a whole render or you render just the part you want to show? It is exactly posts like yours that always look so detailed that make me wonder if my res is a bit low.I don't think your res is too low.
I've set my own requirements for my stuff. Those details I show on my thread are taken from the actual high-res full image. They aren't rendered separately/differently. So that gives an indication of how big the whole thing is (which is 4,400 x 2,657 pixels by the way)
One reason I'm going that big is because it's so easy to just tell my 3D app to render it that size. But the real reason is because I plan on getting a large print of it (on photographic paper) to hang on the wall so that's the main reason for that especially high resolution. Plus a lot of my post-work is easier at high-res. I show the high-res details because they look better and indicate more clearly what I'm doing, but I sure don't mean them to suggest how big anyone else's files should go.
I think the most important consideration is that the final image works at the intended size, which for this challenge I guess is to imagine it filling an A4 glossy page. Despite the fact that I'm going a bit bigger than I need to, that's my main consideration too

Hiya Gabriel, sorry its been a while. This is looking great my friend, I still love the green, I am in love with Rita (like many others i reckon - she is sooo sexy!). As for your latest hotbed of controversey - I like the right side darker hair, it contrasts nicely with the green plexi-glass behind him, the blond is too heavy in the yellow to sit up against the green imho.
As for resolution 300dpi on A4 physical size will be quite ample, I think my file is around 5000px on its longest edge but that is because I tend to have poster prints produced so it needs to be bigger. Anyhow, I have never had any issues with the detail levels of your posts so I would'nt worry mate.
Keep it up and good luck
Jeffparadox
09-24-2007, 07:23 PM
hahaha, I see that my good buddy Gabriel is working hard on the hottie at last :D nice image dude! It already looks like a finished comic frame, meaning there is great stuff going on already!
To be honest, I'd play with the colors of Rita and the bus stop, and experiment for an hour or so, because now I see all the basic colors in the focal point of the pic, which could give you a hard time in creating a general mood. On the other hand, you could choose to keep those bright colors and really work on making them fit together, since it's a bright sunny day it'd make sense, and that's how I went with my own illustration actually. Or, you could ignore everything I've just said also. hehehehehe
About the image size: I think you're working on a good scale, and it'd be totally cool with the challenge. On the other hand, I personally try to go as big as I can, depending on how exciting the subject is, because I always see my illustrations as being printed poster size in the future, by me at least heheheh. Only downside is the processing speed obviously. So my suggestion would be: you are already in the ball park for the challenge, paint the image as big as you would want to see it...
As far as the layers go: I used to paint exactly like you've described, which is not a very advatageous way i think. I guess the best way is: trying to reduce your layers to one layer per object, or something close to that, during the first half of your painting. During the second half of painting you'll be fine tuning, and adding effects anyway, which will increase your layer amount drastically. At least this was my experience...
hope these are helpful, cheers buddy

Wow, this looks AWESOME! I loved seeing the progression over the first dozen or so pages, you've come so far and I can't wait to see the finished product! Your -first- color blocking is better than my finished products! XD Do much action and dynamic poses and expression! Awesome job, it's really active and friendly and great!! :eek:You won't believe this but in the end we had a tie on Billy's fur issue...
Ferx, Abscnth, Axel, Melkao, and "Cool foot Fer" liked the dark haired one.
Soapy, Jeff, Walrus, Jassar and Insane vehicle designer Mark David went for the blonde.
Let me re-count..... .... .... .... .... ... .yes.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... I'm gonna try to make a version that doesn't have too much of either, Y'know so no one has to care a lot for that part, if that doesn't work I'll make him wear a rasta hat...............
Expect my first post of the whole thing as it gets real shape, here tomorrow night!! I was going to do it today but I sat down to watch 'Superman Doomsday' (kinda cool) and now is really late.................................... I'm ashamed:blush:

Don't you hate to have only 3 milestone titles for your illustration post and neither seems to fit? Jeezzz.....
Well, this is the pic as it came out after putting together all pieces from at least 4 other files. Here are some things that I will add in the coming days:
1. Real foliage, yes, what you see is the old and washed off leaf brush that comes in Photoshop, but is great for a easy sketching!!
2. The detail and proper perspective on the buildings.
3. A billboard.
4. A trash bin maybe.
5. Some more trash out of the bin as suggested.
6. More buildings far away.
7. Maybe a sign post, but only if it doesn't clash with the axe (I don't think I need two vertical lines there).
8. Rita's outfit design.
9. The map.
10. Detail on all you see now.
AND OF COURSE THAT STUPID BRIEFCASE, but I'm pretty sure that will be the last thing before I send the final.
Once again everything is WIP and can be changed so don't miss the chance to add your little spice into it! this little reply button is just begging to be smashed!!
Hey Gabriel, that is more a beautiful playground than a sandbox :D I like a lot your overall composition, great mate!! About your homework :D : Agree with you about the sign post (perhaps a post on the other side of the street behind the car.. dont know... no, is not a good idea... hahahahah) and i see you put some people walking on the street and behind the bust stop, that will be really great. Great work my friend!!

Hey NEVILLE, Pal!! good to see you're back! Please be careful with those feet, we artist need them to paint!
Not, seriously I hope you're doing better now, take care!
Oh, and yes, NERDYNINJA, I will try to add some dirt to the floor and make it less 'new'.
Actually I will change just a bit the hue of some of the tiles, that always work good for natural random feeling, and I will add an slight emboss effect too.

I like your pic, the body language is prefect and your earlier sketch as well. It maybe to late but since your so good at capturing body language it would have been cool if you dew some other people avoiding the bus stop. Like walking around the booth in stead of in front or someone esle relly surprise to see the bison there like they just walked up and bamm!, make the person jump back a little. Good work either way keep up the good work and thanks for the feed back on my pic.

"cool foot fer"? hehehe thanks for the rename :scream:
and I have a small crit to make you.... isn't the scene a bit too bright? maybe it's just personal taste, but I find that there is a lot of whites in your scene right now, it reminds me of a movie set with all those bright artificial lights coming from everywhere... maybe its just that the sky is too white for me...

Hola Gabriel! ya no tome tanta chela! jaja! que barbaro esta quedando super padre!:scream:
Well I am so glad to see the hole thing already!
I love how this its going! GREAT WORK! And to comment about, it will be that, I agree about adding some people reacting to the scene, the tree will be nice to give it another texture besides, the “ficus” one, Maybe because its to much green, with the bus stop glass, and the tree, coz for a moment I imagine it in hues of fall season. Or Spring to develop a bit more the romantic scene! And the light concept seems to be good for a warm season! So here’s the name of some trees I think you might like to check the texture, for purples “Jacaranda”, and “Californian Lilac”, and for foliage shrubs, “pride of Madeira” , for warm tones; “Magnolia” ( it got nice contours shapes for the branches) there’s also the very typical Mexican, “African Tulip Tree” love the big orange flowers that point any were, as for a nice yellow or green-yellow; “Tulip Tree”, and if the idea is ever green, “Yew”, “ Cypress” and “Elm”, hehe Well hope it helps at least to inspire you! Ooh! I an not so crazy a bout the trash can. Maybe I would prefer an interesting news paper box! They have poster as well! (And you can put one of those advertising of dating services!!! haha) Well so far that’s about it, since you are not done yet with her outfit! Love the legs though! You are going so darn good! Great Work Gabriel!
I am sorry I wasn't along for the complete ride Gabriel, I am having to play catch up :D I am loving this piece! The only comment I have is, probably just me but, that car is very bugging, it squeezes the image a bit too tightly. Your painting by numbers concept image stands out amazingly, because that car is really pushed back with minimal detail. I know you aren't finished and I leave the magic up to you:thumbsup: I just feel a bit trapped with the car standing out so much, it keeps pulling my eye. Like Blue80boy was mentioning adding people, lovely idea :) I know you probably have that composition locked, but maybe on this ocassion expanding the canvas could let the energy of your scene breathe a bit. You can always re-crop :) (Painter wants you to, haha:D )
Lovely art:love:captivating!

No big deal but I really wanted to show you how it's going... I focused on the part where the two of them meet, I acually changed a bit Rita's position so she looks more 'bumping' and out of balance and less 'posing'. Also, you know... the hair contrast issue raises its ugly head! Let me know if it works for you or not, I'm still on it.....
Hey Gabriel, I love Rita!! I like the new "bumping" position and the colour of the clothes are great. The expression is really cool !!
Perhaps the hair of Rita from yellow to orange (naranja, naranja ! :D ) tones for a bit more contrast with Billy´s fur and some more hair in front on the zone of the hard light (se ve un poco pelona en la parte de la frente :) ). Maybe the eyebrows more darker ( and a big eyelashes)
Great and awesome work my friend !! Cheers

I Love Rita's outfit! great choice on her skirt and the print its great for her personality! the shirt looks great, but I will sugest go for a bit more pale pink, to complement better! not that its needs to, just a personal choice!:)... the legs look great! and the hair also complements good to Billy's fur, but maybe add a bit of more hair, like Fer sugested just to add more volume to that sexy Rita! :D
You are going great! I am enjoying every post! good work!

Nice update Gabriel, She is looking great! her clothes turning out awesome, i'm loving all the colors and the premature textures you got so far. It doesn't really bother me that her hair color is close to the color of his fur, but I also like the idea of givig a quick shot to a few other colors for her hair like others mentioned. design of his belt is also fun, fits very nicely to the style. Ouch I just lost some 40 minutes of work 'THANKS' to a classic, nice, and completely unexcused Photoshop crash... y'know .......
Man, I'm going so slow, I Know you'll think it is because of the hair but is not that, that is quite fast, is just that i think of so many things still missing and just don't know what to do next....
Anyway, I wanted to squezze out my frustration by saying hello to everyone, Hey I have newcomers too! Ramitxon, thepineman, overcontrast, Authentic, Korendo, AshCR24, Laurentino, oh, and Hiun, I will see that the car doesn't steal the atention too much, Thanks a lot to you all for droping by and take a look around.
OH and the good old pals, you know you areas always welcome!! MMM.. for Ferx and Jeff Letme say I will do some test of hair colors for Rita, but I tried red already and didn't look so good, just letme lay down a bit more detail on Billy's arm and then we'll see....
Remko, I know, the shadow can be darker and I will try it.... but again I'm waiting to have the figures done to see how it looks better... thanks buddy.
Oh and to "sunlight-sesitive foot fer":D you're right... the sky is mostly white, I don't even know why.... I just left it like that, but now is fixed ald once buildings are added I think the light in that area will make more sense...
Axel, I will use your tips on plants and bushes, You'll see i have good plans for them now! Thanks!
Oh, and Nerdyninja, there's no plans for a Billy action figure since Mcfarlane toys made one a while ago and I actually stole a bit from it to make Billy:blush:, What about a plush doll instead? AW wouldn't that be cozy!!!:D

Hi!!, for the first time in, like a month, I had a whole day for this thing. And this is some of the stuff, Please let me know how you see it, I try to get it as close as to the original palette as possible but I have to change some colors on the way, and is kinda hard for me to tell if they look better or I just screwed up big time...
I'd say billy is some 80% done and Sweet Rita is abut 70%, I already have a lot of the bus stop done in a different file at work, lets see how this all wraps...
Thanks a lot for the posts! amazing how people keep entering the contest with such good ideas!
I really wish just everyone will finish on time, Keep up!

It's looking really nice, Gabriel. Good to see it all coming together. what a lot of work you've put into the details, especially all that hair and fur texturing - wow! Speaking of hair, I like how Rita's haid casts a shadow on her forehead, as you would expect it too. The bison's doesn't have the same effect: Given how much his toussled haid overhangs his head, might be nice to see more shadows from the hair onto the rest of the face.
Also - and this may just be because you haven't gotten there yet - the lowest panel that you just posted looks really, really clean. The armor and the ground tiles all look impossibly brand new. I assume you just haven't made it to grunging them up a bit - I'm in the same spot with my own floor tiles! But just thought I'd point it out.
Good luck!

Gabriel, this is looking great, so fun to watch as you pick up speed! I love your designs at various parts of billy, the details are turning out delicious. One thing i can point out is the color of billy's hoofs, which look a little metallic to me now. Maybe a very suble yellowish hue could make it look more organic? Great job on billy's mouth/nose area! waitn fo mo...
Hey Gabriel, nice details my friend!! I like a lot the Billy´s axe, cool!! and great armor for the legs!! nice!! Perhaps a bit darker colour on the tips of the hoofs, only a comment:) Again great work my friend !! Cheers !

Well, tell me if you like what you see... Heck, I do!! But i'm partialy "Bison&blonde - blind" now, Please spare two cents for me!
Oh, yes! My good pal and Rita's fashion advisor Axel Alonso helped me to come out with all this nice cloth textures and colors, for the jacket I took refference on a hat picture he sent me. The jacket texture (hope is clear to see in this file) is kind of a thick-knit cotton fabric. and the sleeve ends and edges are supposed to be silk textured, I like the silky shine, but I already used it fot her shirt, and maybe I'm abusing it now with the jacket, so this is the 'before and after' applying the shine, what's better? C'mon, help the near sighted...
Thank you all again by the way, the nice coments keep coming, I hope you enjoy visiting too!

Oh.... I keep forgetting things........
Her lower calf is all misshapen, I have to make the ankle thicker and maybe change the longitude of it, I also think the two shoes are not the same size... what do you think?
I go, Good nite!
Hey Gabriel, sweet Rita is really sweet!! I like a lot the silk shirt, and the specular brights on the edges of the jacket ( in the right pic) puts a more bright fabric, but not totally silk (perhaps a small and more bright specular), but i think the jacket looks really nice with that texture.
The Rita's right leg and right foot from the knee to the toe looks turned like a left leg and left foot.
Agree that the left ankle is less thicker than right ankle.
About Shoes, IMO looks for the same size, maybe the heel of the right shoe is a bit biger than left  :D
Again, great work my friend !!!
You're a monster Gabriel!! Subtle and sweet. I see what you are saying about the ankles but the shoe size is right though. The value on the heel of the left shoe doesn't show the full form well though so it seems skinny. You are doing really great stuff! Please keep doing what you do!
