View Full Version : adding detail to sharkmodel
sputnikinspace 03-22-2003, 09:29 PM Im modeling a shark model and now I've come to the part were it's time to add details - how should I do?
The model is quite lowLoly right now I want to add more details to the eye etc.
Tried makinf an inner extrude but the hypernurbs did not like that - should I make more cuts, subdivide or what??
please advice...

you can always try extruding by 0
I am not with my copy Of c4d rightn now but i think if you extrude by 0 it will add another set of points but i am not entirely sure about this.

to close cuts defines the area to much....
I think you are gonna have to go high poly eventuallyto define and area. with the low ammount of polys you are using its gonna be impossible to define something with out it looking a bit funny. unless you figure out ways to make your hyper nurbs weighting dance like fred upstairs.

ok - will make a few cuts then make the hypernurbs editable!!
posting results as they come...

If you loop the polys around the model in the jaw area you´ll get rid of the trouble you´re having right now
Attached an old model of mine - maybe helpful.

thanks for the tip!! Would be interested in knowing exactly how you built your model though...boxmodeling or by extruding( with edge extrude plugin)or any other way???
Having some troubles with the mesh - to many triangles - won't work with hypernurbs.
Also how can one refine the mesh without getting triangles??
thanks for the answer!!

yes...I think i found out something ny looking at your model!!!
What I wanted to do was to increase the complexity in certain areas and still keep others as simple as possible...think I found a way..Thanks!!
Maybe this is one way to do it?( used Arndt Von
Koenigsmarck's plug-in cutter)
-look at pictures..

(is there a beter way to post images???)
I always model poly by poly - it gives me more control over the mesh, but I´ve seen many awesome models done with boxmodeling, so it´s not a case of one is better than the other - just personal preference.
Depending on which version of cinema you´re working with there are different ways to go about adding detail to a mesh. In version 8 the edge tools are very helpful - the tris they produce are very easily removed with a bit of thinking and restructuring. Another good plugin is Saw if you want to add detail to a lowpoly mesh. Tris are, in most cases, avoidable if you plan your mesh accordingly. I know this is pretty vaque, but it is a fairly complex subject/matter which can´t be explained on the fly. I`d gladly do a tutorial which will explain the possibilities (as far as I know them) in depth (- so if someone reading this like to host a couple of .pdf´s in the near future - let me know!)
Did you try extrude inner? I think you can obtain most of the stuff, you are after now, with that.

thanks pit for the answer!
I know it's kind of hard to explain all that, but now I know a little better and thats all I ever wanted - to learn, to be better at cinema.
Hopefullt someone can host your tutorials- would be a blast to see them anyway!! post in the tutorial section maybe!!
Thanks again...I'll return with update and new problems!!

Trien Saw -the r8 version and it's great! But I don't think it can be used in the middle of a geometri beacuse it leaves an open hole.( gotta check out the edge melt thread though, maybe thats the answer).
To extrude an edge has totally gone me by, exellent, that can do stuff much easier. Extrude Inner is also quite useful.
Thanks for the tips - beter start working know - let me know about those tutorials..
cheers

The "trick" with Saw is to cut twice, so you´re able to make a quad at both ends. Simple as that ;) To be able to work with edges in Cinema (again) is really one the highlights!
