I did with with a spline forming the end of the book and extruded it, then mirrored it.

Thats the basic shape but I want to get the "serrated" look you get on books when they are opened, especially big old ones

you might be able to try texturing it using like lines in the bump or displacement. make it editable and then just set selections so you dont get the lies ever the whole thing.

sounds like a job for one of Darf's plugins (forgot the name of the plugin). There used to be a picture of an open book in the Bhodinut Gallery, made with one of those plugins.
