This is my start model, no details yet just the basic forms. Before I model more I wanted to see if he fitted in the environment.

hi mate, welcome to the challenge :)

I like the concept star wars theme, it nice, but i still think that you should work a little bit more on the concept to push the "straneg behavior theme" little more, for e.g add fight in the background, like he is cought in the middle of fight :) or some busy trafic in the back :)

Peter-Eriksson
07-08-2007, 08:33 PM
Been away for the whole weekend. Have been thinking of something on that line, to have something more happening where the center of attention is so when you see him its just an added bonus :-). Will work on that a little more.

/peter

I have not yet decided what will go on in the background. Need something to explain why he's is standing there in the bushes. One idea is that there is a big "Storm trooper" party, and that he's just had one to much :-) Still haven't decided the sky.
More to come!

Don't know if this is strange enough but I think It's a bit funny tho. You can push this very far, think what could happen if Vader made some sushi whit his light saber :-)

lol man you that stuff is funny (the toilet papper at low gravity), but I vote same as walrus keep on watering the bushes ;)
about the stormtrooper idea i think it might work yea :)
....also just as option you can change the composition so you push it closer the entrance of the pub, (inside and infront of it Sith's are having party) and just the corner next to it our dark hero is taking a leak :)
and may be you can add a bear bottle near hes feet, to support your story that he had to many drink that night and he is still drinking\

This is a simple model of the AT-ST that's gonna be in the background, driven by drunken storm troopers. They are very low poly and my idea is to paint in the details to more closely match the originals, or do some quick textures with bump maps. Model done in modo, reference material from the book "The Art of Star Wars: Return of the Jed" which I scanned. Later I saw that a quick Google search would have saved me the time :-).

I'm back from a long vacation (and work). I have finished the base for Vader in Modo today and done some tests how to paint the rest of the body. Will change the pose to better match my first sketch. As u can see I've only modeled the parts that is seen from the "camera".

Hi Peter, definately strange, one thing though. The road seems empty have emperor or some other characters pass by. Another funny thing would be if he was drunk, pissing and drinking at the same time. Make sure he's pissing all over his boots.

great idea, I loved the first skectch when I saw it...
I think you should make him stand in front of some bushes like in your first sketches, or a wall if you want to keep it in an only-tech environment, IMHO its more clear that he's peeing and not just standing and thinking...
good luck with it! :)

yes its better to stick with the first concept, bushes, wall, old pannels anything that u feel comfortable in the enviorment, i also think if thers nothing in front of him it will defenitly look like he is overthinking something. Keep it coming mate these will goin to be fun

Thanks for the input and I think you are right. I need something to "hide" behind, like bushes or a wall otherwise it looks like he just stand there and looking down. I think I will go with this "boxes" and other stuff that is gonna be loaded into ships or what ever.

Done the city that will be in the background and im now testing different lightning and still haven't decided on the sky. Sky's are a pain in the a**, need to practice on that :-) (That to by the way, never done an illustration like this before). The buildings are all done in Modo (301 has come :-). Used two different maps on them to get some detail so that I didn't have to paint everything. Next post will be a color test with more detail.

The way i see it you have put Vader in the far corner as if he's a prop and not the main subject of this piece. At this point the Walkers are the main subject. Step back and give it some thought.
Later.

Hi and thanks for C&C, really need and have used a couple of em. It's hard not to over do things, thats my biggest problem and then end up with a mess that looks like s**t. I'm taking some days of the picture now and get back on it in a day or two.

Thanks Guero for the C&C. My main reason not to put Vader in the focus is that I want it to be a little "surprise" when you see him. The focus is on the partying Stormtroopers who's having their day off or what ever they are celebrating :-)

Peter,
Your work is looking fantastic and i'm looking forward to seeing it fully finished. It's a whole new take on the evil dark lord. Even villians need to pee!:D
Very interesting how you have combined 3D and 2D something i'd like to try myself once I get a graphics tablet.
BTW thanks for your positive comments on my nose picking robot..cheers:thumbsup:

The TIE fighter is done. To much detail but it was fun, I'm planning to finish it of completely when this challenge is done.
So now back to the main illustration, be back soon.

Added some new bushes. Comes from a collection of bushes and trees that I did in Vue and Bryce a year ago, just to have for projects like this.

This is the image so far, almost done! Will work more on Vader and the of course the sky. Have also added some more haze (thanks nwiz25 for the comment about that :-)

A small update. More detail on Vader and in the city. Also added some more light reflection on the building and additional "noize". Some color correction but haven't desided yet.

great, inspirational work! you've definitely done your research :D

hate to say it, but i think i prefer the pose of vader in the earlier, concept pictures - i think it made it much more clear what he was doing when he wasn't obscured by the bushes. i also think there is a certain leaning to that pose that emphasizes what he is doing :P

good luck!

Yes you have a point there and thats something that I have been thinking of... I shall take a shot at it and try to change his position. It's hard not to get carried away by new ideas and concepts, sometimes it's important to stick with the original idea :-). So input of this kind is very helpful when you are your own director ...

Changed Vaders pose a litte, more back to the first sketch and I think this works better.

that is the funniest entry i've seen so far!
first i thought, omg just another well rendered image that has nothing to do with "strange behavior" but now that i see he's pissing into the bush i really have to say: GOOD JOB!

awesome! ok, maybe it's too late to suggest something, since you're almost done,
BUT i think your work would be improved if you let someone look over his shoulders while pissing into the bush! at least i'd laugh so hard i swear =)

This is it, the FINAL image!
The story is simple: The Stormtroopers are having their weekly after work with the boss.
Lesson to learn: – Don't drink and drive!

How I did the painting the short version:
First i did a quick drawing in my sketch book. Scanned that and did some color testing.
After that I did all the "parts" for the scene in Luxology Modo and arranged them in Photoshop for texturing and color.
This is the biggest and most fun "illustration" I've ever done and it's been a lot of fun. Thank you all for the C&C :-)

wow... shame on me I totally missed your entry Peter. I am very surprised. Maybe I was awaiting you around animation/movie category. Anyway, great final image. You are dealing with same importance of closeups as I do with my illustration, but I believe it is worth of it. It´s cool to see StarWars fan as you are doing such a jokes. Good luck mate

one question
what was the RWNDER TIME ??

Good question :-)
The way I did it was by breaking up the scene in different parts but I think that the most complex scene took about 3.5 hours to render om my G5 Macintosh 2 x 2 GHz, 1.5 GB ram (not Intel).

I collected all the different "parts" that I used for the image in this image.

http://bombim.com/CGS/all-parts.jpg

And the final image:

nice - and all toghether composed in PS ?

VERY nice

i've to try this technique in interior renders. Maybe it's good way to render interiors without GI - just to fake it...?

Any sugestions ? or TIPS ?
