This is my first concept that I came up with. It's simply a bunch of kids sitting in the sanbox eating sand, like kids do, and also a man eating sand... Well, I don't know, what do you think?

An adult man playing like a litte child? whats strange about that :D

eRKK
07-04-2007, 06:37 PM
Haha, yeah... Guess that's right :D That's why I made him eat sand... ;) Think it'll be more obvious when I finnish up their faces. Well, anyways I'm not completly sold about the idea but it's the only one that i've come up with... Thanks for the comment anyways! ;)

Ok... Hope this one is a little better then the last one at least. This is the famous painting by Michelangelo with a few changes. In my version man is looking at TV and ignores God. Guess some of you get the messege... I am by no means religious but I've been thinking of creating this in 3d for a while and now is my chance! I hope that no one is offended by this... Am I even allowed to make a "re-painting" like this?

I really like your last idea, but I wouldn't have understand that he was watching TV without your description (which is somewhat understandable I guess since this is just a basic layout). I'd suggest however that if you don't include the TV in the screen, then make the remote clearly visible in his hand.

And I'm no expert, but I don't think there would be any copyright problem with this illustration since you're more caricaturing an idea than stealing it.

Anyway, good luck for this challenge! :)

Thank you! :) Yeah, I noticed that it was a bit hard to understand about the TV in that picture and that's why I wrote it down ;)

I wasn't thinking so much about the copyright issue as about the rules for the competition... Can I "take" a work like this..?

Frotze
07-05-2007, 09:16 PM
Well, I don't really see why you couldn't. The rule is to follow the topic, and this illustration is definitely not showing what you would expect it to.

Here's an idea : you could back up the camera so that we see the painting hanged on a wall of a museum, with people watching it like if it's actually perfectly normal.

Okej... Two hours ago I was sure I was going to go with this but now I'm having doubts about it... Making it a painting and then start to model the people around the painting is really alot of work... :/ Guess I'll just start to model it and see where it goes, eh?

Frotze

You're right, being too ambitious can be a pain sometimes. :) Just the painting itself is a good idea on its own, anyway, so I'd say go with it. You can always do a museum environnement later if you realise you got enough time.

Yeah, thanks:) I've started to model the head of the man... I'll post it in just a few seconds!! ;)

As I said... Mans head. Still symetry on face so I havn't started to work on the whole emotionell aspect of it. Thought it would be nice to have some crits. on it anyway, I am going for some simularity with the original.

Nothing much has changed. Just thought I might hear with you guys about how I'll go on with the body, will I make it realistic (boring?) or semireal (could work right?) or just cartoon the hell out of it (...?)?? :D I don't want to go "overreal" but I'd still like to have good resemblence to the original. So... WHAT SAY YOU!?

Nice model, but the shoulders are far too small and pointy, and they seem too far out into the arm.

Frotze
07-06-2007, 01:05 PM
I agree with drewfarr about the shoulders. The transition between the trapezius and the deltoid should be a bit more smooth, even with the arms raised like that. And I would suggest you make his arms bigger, for he got a very proeminent jaw with suggest strong muscles. But you did a good job on the head, I really like it. :)

Todays "so far" update on the body. I havn't started on the back so if he looks to thin from the side it's simply because he is missing his back! ;) What do you think? Bigger arms? Shorter arms?

drewfarr: Thanks for you comment!

Frotze: Thank you, is the shoulder looking better now?

Frotze
07-07-2007, 12:09 AM
Yup, shoulders work for me. Wrists could be little bit bigger I think, but otherwise he looks very good. :) Will you make him naked, or will he be wearing some sort of modern clothes?

Update on the body... This is one of my very first time trying to create a human body and my absolut very first try at modeling legs so if anyone has any opinions or sugestions, besides what is "wrong" simply because of the slight cartoon style to it, please speak up!

Frotze: Thanks man! Since I'm really going for "first look simularity" I guess I'll make him almost nude. I'm thinking of throwing on some dirty underpants to make it look more "now".

Drewfarr: Thank you very much!! I will try to keep going! ;)

Does anybody know why I can't post in PNG format? I try to, but it says that I have to post it in PNG... And I do!! :banghead: I hate to post in JPG couse it really messes up the renders!! Thanks.

Frotze
07-09-2007, 02:07 AM
Does the png you try to submit comes straight from render? Maybe taking it in photoshop and then save it back into your prefered format would make a difference...

As for your legs, I always have trouble myself modeling them, so I can't help you a whole bunch. The best advice I got would be to grab as much reference as possible, which is what I always do. Right now they look okay, yet somewhat squarish - but hey, who am I to criticize an "absolute very first time" leg-modeling attempt... Keep it up, mate! It's great to follow your progress.

Thanks a bunch Frotze! Actually... I don't have PS, I just copy screengrabs from C4D to paint and then save it as PNG there... :D

As for the legs I know they look a bit squarish but that partly because of the lack of "backness" since I have not modeled the backside of them yet and the SSS reacts a bit wierd to that.
I really, really apprieciate you help and comments on this!! Thank you!

My pleasure, man. :) I don't have much to do these time unless working (and waiting for my new pc to come so I can finally start working on my entry) so I figured I'd look around and help people out as best I can. I'll be glad to hear what you think of my work, too, once I really get started.

07-09-2007, 09:50 PM
Ohh, I see! So, when do you get you new PC? So you are expecting me to make comments in your thread aswell, that's what all this is about, eh?! :D

Frotze
07-10-2007, 12:23 AM
Exactly! And what's cool is that I don't even have to botter about making the comments myself. I got that book at home, "Easy critics for cg entries". I just open it randomnly and copy it right here. Saves me a lot of time.

But seriously, I should receive my pc next week. And I'll come by around here just a often as right now, in case you were wondering. :)

:D Haha, I see...

Ok, so next week we'll be seing some serious artwork?? :applause:

Although, It's my birthday tomorrow (wednesday) and my whole family is going away for a few days so there wont be coming any updates from over here for some time... Guess I'll have to work extra extra hard later on today... Right now it's 2:30 and I've been up since seven this morning. So, yes, it will be later on today! :buttrock:

Don't know if I should make the head smaller, but I guess I can change that after I've posed him. This is my first time ever modeling a full body so crits would be much appreciated!

Looking good! I don't have any problem with the size of the head, but you're forearms might be a bit too big (the sort of bulge just after the elbow). The rest looks fine to me.
