View Full Version : Tornado Effect

Name: Hemn and Filip
Software used: Maya, mental ray, Fusion, photoshop, mudbox
Country: Sweden
Me and a friend made this movie. The tornado is made of more than 4 layers of particles. The small house is made of particle instancers and rigid bodies. The compositing part is included in the movie; the break down.

Before I say anything else, I think you should link to a smaller format like 720x480 etc. HD is big and bulky.
That being said, there are a lot of really good things you're doing in this animation. I like how the ground changes after the tornado passes so you can see the path it took.
A few things that don't sell the shot:
1) The ground...You can see clearly a lot of gravel and particulate matter that doesn't move at all during the entire animation.
2) The bits and pieces of house start falling back to the ground, and you can see they're following the wind/suction of the departing tornado, then they just fall straight down. :)
3) Particles clipping on the ground plane. I'm not sure quite how to describe this, but when the tornado gets closer and more dust gets thrown at the camera, I'm seeing seams from I'm guessing is the particle layer intersecting the ground layer.
4) Dust only in the foreground...I'd conjucture there'd be a lot more dust at least closer to ground level, and extending further into the background than what I'm seeing.
5) Neatly arranged funnel column...I think it could be a lot more frenzied, random, but still visibly rotating. Make it dirtier! :)
Good job, I think you might get more replies with a smaller, and easier to download format. ;)
EDIT: Another thing to consider is changing the particles depending on what kind of ground the tornado is chewing up. Go from transluscent to very dirty, and so on...

Hi...
I've edited the post now, for those with a lower band I've added a new URL.
You got some good points there. Ofc we were aware of these things when we were working with the project. But I guess the only reason why we didn't do everything perfectly, was the amount of time we had and the enormous amount of data and dynamics we had to consider when you make any changes, that made it a bit difficult to add things later on. In future projects extreme planing is important.

Very nice, I have nothing to say because the previous poster listed everything (although the clipping was not very noticeable).
Any reason why you used Boston as a background? We don't get much tornados here :)

Not any particular reason we just liked the background :)

Kul att äntligen få se slutresultat! :)
Hittat något jobb under sommaren?
Själv måste jag erkänna att jag inte hunnit med någon CG alls under sommaren :(
Good jobb buddy!

Not much to add, but my additional comment from an animation perspective is that the birds are bobbing up and down too much. It looks like a flock of lazy eagles. If there's tornados about, I doubt birds would even be out there in the storm.
Other than that, it's an excellent comp. Well done :)

i like it alot you have the foundtion set up, but i think its only the little touches that will make it perfect.
I also agree with ''Earendil'' about the bits of dbree from the houses falling stright down and not draging along witht he force of the wind.
and think a overall camera shake would of done justice, not 1 film has a sterdy camera when doing tornados, lighting etc.

Checka skolans forum, där finns det också en tråd, vi kan snacka där istället.
