i m greeting everyone at the contest and i m beginning my job with those fast sketches which ll go along with my concept story.
The story is about a female turtle named Uchuchbagha. a lady turtle... She was always being jealous with ladybeetles flying around her. By the time she begin to admire them. She was thinking she is ugly, slow and desperate as a creature. And they are beautiful and they fly...
One day, she painted her tortoiseshell as a ladybeetle with red and black dots. Then all the ladybeetles came around and on her shell... She lit a gas lamp to pull them more... She was nearly living her dream... But, she has left one final thing to make this dream perfect... She just wanted to be happy for one last time in her endless life. Besides she was really started to think she is a ladybeetle!...
poor lady turtle.

By the way this is the simply composition. above the sky highlights the emotion of her desire for flying. Showing the moon, stars, a comet and clouds of course. These things make it more imaginary. Below, there will be an area like a shining city. There is no city maybe in fact, but she imagine that she is going in to a neverland... She will find her neverland.. there will be a deep cliff but with city signs also at the beginning.
This image shows the scene roughly. i guess i m inspired from mac's wallpaper too much.. :D u know which one it is...

Sweetness!!! your idea is so charming.... there are many melancholic pieces in the contest and I love'em, and yours is one of the best concepts!! keep on with it!
As for the composition maybe you could put a couple ladybugs flying in first plane to to fill the bottom space. I know is an abyss, but still I feel something is missing there.
Hope it helps!

improving the model of the lady turtle Uchuchbagha... progressing...
She is looking to sky but this head position is not so easy with turtle anatomy... i dont want to be so far to the real anatomy of the animal at this character. Some birds looking at their top by rotating their head left - right, because their eyes at the sides, not front like us. so , turtles has the same situation... i wanted to solve this.

Yes, mostly my message was that the dark area in the lower part of the image is too empty. but if you are going to add the city elements there then is just fine! you can try a couple little ladybugs flying there, like they guide the turtle, thats my idea:)
And then the turtle's head... you can exaggerate more the "neck" part of the shell like in this picture (http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=41487&rendTypeId=4%20)
as you can see, the turtle in the photo can really look up to the sky if she wants to!:D even if your turtle has a shorter neck this could help you.
See you soon:thumbsup:

Whaow, thanks Garbiel... i m glad to hear your opinions about the story. And i agree with you about melancholia emotion... A good job must contain a strong mood and that feeling is one of the most impressive mood.
i ll try to impress this emotion as the very best way i can.
but...
i couldnt understand your advice at all... Could you please describe it more???
(my English a little bit poor, sorry for that)
you mean, should i put some ladybugs flying below to the dream city?
Hey Alperen, nice sketches and really nice idea, with many potential !! I liked a lot !! Best of luck with your entry and looking forward for more updates!! :)

hehe, im glad u like it Remko, somehow it seems i begin to like it too
and i like the taste of your works, i must say. wish u good luck... chya!:)
--and Woo, thanks four your helpful crits, i m surprised you drown it..
Firstly, i imagine the head just like you suggest. i mean, looking up by rising head. But then, i decided not to rise it, only rotating a little bit at one side. Some creatures look at their top like this way because their eyes at their both sides of their head. And i find it soooo cuuuuute!! :) My bird was looking up this way... (it died...
i m not sure if turtles look up that way (and i m not even sure if they look UP..? :)) , but this is characteristic and lovely i think...
anyway i hope it doesnt look so wrong...
thnx for advice ,u make me to think 1more time, and i m totally agree with u with your first advice... i will add many things to the composition.
THNX FOR SUPPORTS! :bounce:

Hi Alperen! Thanks for visiting my thread. By this way I could have seen your work and it's really a nice concept which is full of emotion. The first sketches are very good, especially the details on the portrait of the turtle. I guess the angle of that portrait is the best for your scene because of the expression on her eye gives the both emotions as envy and melancholy. On the other hand I'm agree with the comments of SteevieWoo. Anyway your concept is one of the good pieces, Good Luck! Cheers! Görüşmek Üzere!

Here is some early details and the head position change.
There is an etude of the gas lamp and some environmentals. There will be a lot of ladybugs that i ll put them later. But u ll see some little black holes on the leaves because they ll be eaten by those bugs. I'll examine those detils later too...
Also i changed Uchuchbagha's head by the supports of comments.. :) The face and mimics not finished. But this one will be better to reflect the emotion as you both say...
i hope to sumbit new ones a few days later...
Take it easy everyone... :)
Hey Alperen, really cool details!! really nice foliage!! nice work!!
I like the new head position for Uchu´s head, but perhaps a bit small, only a comment:) Again nice work mate!

09-03-2007, 08:15 AM
Ok, thanks for your comments and compliments Ferx...
There is a contradiction about my solution, yeah, head is smaller now this make it more characteristic and actually i liked the small head - large body contrast BUT! in the complete image, it may be too small to reflect the emotion. i ll think about that.
When i saw Gabriel's post, i really afraid of those turtles!!! what the hell of this creature??? :) anyway Gabriel, i thank you so much about guiding me that way.
And about the bottom stage of the image, there will be a LOT of thing that i still dont know..! But your opinion is cool.. i stongly thing about that too...
thnx folks!!

Selam Alperen.
Your paint job is looking fantastic, I also think your concept is adorable; it has a very similar feel to some short stories I wrote myself. Your textures are turning out great, I'd say the eyes of her could be a little bit more prominent, it took me a few looks to see her eyes actually, a very subtle touch-up should fix it easily. Can't wait for the BG. Keep it up buddy! Bol sanslar!

You Rock!! There's so much detail !! !! !! And I think you're fast too!
To add to the discusion I will say that now that head is bigger it is harder to imagine her as an old turtle. I think that the close-up on you first post is the best expression so you can add some of the wrinkled skin and ofcourse those marvelous tears, besides the great texture you have right now!

beautiful image Alperen! one of the moodiest on the competition... Its just emotional man. I like the uniqueness in your painting style and also how the composition is almost entirely focused on the turtle. I agree with jeffparadox's comment on the eyes. Having them be larger and more prominent would definitely help sell the idea even more.... aside from that its just beutiful!

Hi Alperen, the work gives the all sadness very well. Everything seems great, the details are all shown themselves in the best way. I'm just wondering if there will be a foreground in your scene may be like blured plants, etc. or a blured ladybug or something different to give the depth more. Anyway keep up the good work. i was working on those cliffs. i tried to show the depth and the atmosphere down there with blue light and fog. it could be darker, i dont know. There is not much detail because there will be feiries at the cliff diffusing below the cliff and calling the lady turtle and guiding her with candles. i m working on them actually.
i wanted to show some brush strokes how i apply them. there will be many changes when the fairies will be put there with light at their hands.

I really really like your work so far. One of my favorites  You manage to bring several moods into this piece, without making it too disturbing or strange. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it works for me for sure. At the beginning I actually tried to do something similar in my own piece, but it never really worked for me, and I ended up doing something completely different.

There in the far nature, between dry bushes and herbals, living for so many years in her endless, dry life. She is an old, lady turtle. She had a simple life with no excitement, mostly alone, nothing more than eating the green... But she lived only for one thing to dream with. Felt love and desired to the graceful red bugs around her. Those lady bugs are meaning of her life. Her name is Uchuchbagha...
She was admiring those bugs because she was old, slow and she was thinking she is ugly too. But those beetles were looking too young, elegant and beautiful to her. And also they were flying which is her only dream...
At her last days, her mind was foggy sometimes and she sometimes thinking that she is a ladybug too. She painted her shell with red and black dots as those beetles. Results of the desperate were appearing.
One day, she was walking with her gas lamp in a calm evening. Slowly the ladybugses around her started to come together around. They were coming to the light, but she was thinking they were coming for her. She was thinking, they will take her with them and fly... She felt the greatest happines about achieving the dreams.
She put the lamp on the stone and walked near the cliff. She was hoping to touch the stars. Flying above the fogs and clouds. She was dreaming a shiny city below down the height. And started to see some feiries with ladybeetle wings. They were calling her down. Showing the way to the city. Seems her last moment, will be her best moment...
And in the image, wee see several moods. The natural environment with some bush, leaves and flowers in the half dark evening with the ambiance light of the moon. Upper image is showing the reality and below part is her imagination. She is looking at the sky with desirous. Above, the sky is cloudy that is covering the stars and the landscape is foggy as her mind. But the bottom part is shiny and twinkling also spacious. The feiries are guiding her with some candles by showing the way. The feiry dusts are referencing stars also.
We see the red color at the ground and on some plants. This is the paint of her shell messing around also reminding blood and she is looking like a victim dying by losing blood. This is only thing referencing to death.
Living for getting old. Dying to make whole life valuable. Reaching the love at the very last moment. By such of those psychologies, this image became a melancholic piece at the strange behavior challenge.

Here i have a problem... i submitted my final image with a wrong size here.
I upload true one to the FTP as tiff, but i wonder if i can correct the one at my challenge page.
May i submit my final image again without writing the story again?
SteevieWoo
11-04-2007, 06:45 PM
HI!
First of things...... Yes you can submit a correction of the final both here and at the FTP, they will just overwrite it, so, no worries!! , here in your thread I don't think you need to resubmit the text, but it helps for newcomers to see your corrected image and find the story at hand too.
Second and more important.... The image rocks!!! I like it a lot, and the concept caught me from the first posts!! I would suggest you to light up more of the rock wall, I think the illuminated area ends too abruptly, and that looses a bit of that sense of vertigo.... I think that doing so you would have the turtle lady in the edge of the two main canvas zones: the dark and the light one, and that would help the composition and the 'feel' of the big step she's about to take.
Great work!! best wishes from here!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Did you include the tear? Is hard to see from here, you should post a close-up of her face:)
