Hello
Hmm, this si very diffucult to tell, without seeing a wireframe. My guess is, judging from the parts, that obviuolsy look alike and the parts that dont, that he used the limbs from Electra (or comic- girl as it was called in the siggraph- content) and attached it to parts he did himself. I see a strong resamblence in the wrists and lower- leg areas (epsecially note the knees and the shinbone). The stomack, neck and face have little in common though, from my point of view.
The breasts in his mesh are much lower than they are in electra and they seem to stand away from the mesh in a different way.
He may have distorted a few things heavily though...
I am not sure it is necessary to do sort of a witchhunt here (hey the mesh was a giveaway and one has to expect things like these to happen), even though he should have given credit to William, if he really used parts of the mesh!

No witch hunt was intended...sorry if I came across that way....it just looked very familiar to me...

hi elmar...
not a witch hunt for my part too..
you know that i still myself have gived away some model..
and naturelly i expect ..that people study them .. or even use some part of them...

but i expect the people .. just to say yes.. i borowed an hand or an ear from thes giveaway model..
just something about being fair :-)

but let us wait for a wireframe ..

i still find that the quality of the face ( proportion ) dont really match the quality of teh torso :-)

It does look similar to your elektra... on the other hand I also have a model that looks similar though I'm pretty sure that's because I used the same reference art to create mine that you used... that may be what happened here as well... or it could have been built right off your model... I guess I didn't really have much to say

I totally disagree with you xtreme3d...apart from that satan comment

well anyways, you guys are asking for this kind of thing to happen - I mean why on earth would you share models you care about - that's just plain insane http://www.aoikenso.net/ap/cg/diss.gif

cars,trucks,motorbikes,bottles... even guitars, that's all OK but custom modeled caracters???the stuff you spent both your time and creative energy to create?

at least this guy is a lightwaver, imagine the horror of seeing it modeled in maya!

The Author of the model has sent a message to someone saying that it is 100% original...so I guess that it's one of those things that is bound to happen when 2 different people model a comic book style girl.....

there is a girl model in serious sam game that looks like your comic girl proton

is that your model or some kind of rework?

1) If you give something away, something like that may happen
2) Although obviously similiar, I don't think Proton made a model that was so unique that any other similiar model would be deemed plagarism

Personally, I find it useful sometimes to have a model in the background layer for reference. Especially for proportions or if I'm lacking decent 2D references. I suppose trouble occurs when that 'sometimes' becomes an 'always' and/or 'reference' becomes a point for point roadmap.

It looks like more than half is still Proton's mesh.

Either that, or two separate artists created the exact same chunky thighs (nice) and a strange calf muscle. All of the uniform wrinkles on the render match poly edges in the mesh.

There is nothing wrong in converting and editing models given out for free, and to be honest, if they were just in the background of a render, it would need just a small notice somewhere (considering this isn't a major hollywood production).

However, it's a bit strange to post it on a 3D site and not mention that it has been converted from another model.

I find it funny that the render was put on the site of the company that employs the modeler. Double funny when the modeler is the moderator of the forums.

This sort of thing occurs all the time. I mostly see it in the Poser community, but I see it other places. Mostly this comes from ignorance (on their part). These ppl. actually believe that by editing someone elses models, it makes it theirs.

Oh well, if you don't want this thing to happen; don't give your models away. Simple. This sort of thing will continue as long as there are ignorant ppl. like this. There's not much you can do, really.

well, i must say that the resemblances are close, but i dont think it was ripped from proton. just looks similar.

if i grabbed a pic of the right model, i made a little comparison for you ppl.

here it is:

i can see a couple similarities in the arms and a pinch in the legs but nothing too close.

Revisiting the Golden Rule:

Give it away.

Give it completely away if you can.

Don't look back.

Give it away for promotional purposes only, get hired by a shark. Give it away as a test, one may find oneself tested. Give it away helpfully,...

I dont think they look alike at all, looks to me like reference pics from Campbell's Danger Girl sketchbook were used to model that, I use em all the time:

http://demented3d.com/refpics/roto-abbey-right.jpg
http://demented3d.com/refpics/roto-abbey-back.jpg

I've used em to create models which look very similar to the model posted on the Newtek board, you get those wicked looking legs.

When I was at rosity, Proton posted a few technical questions on design. I think Moe locked it deeming further investigation. i used to give away free models quite often. I have one free model at simply lightwave, but that's the absolute last one. You have no control there and I can't manually remove it from download. I have to go through administration. Oh well, I never got around to emailing them but now is as good as any other time.

I used to give away models quite often but I remember one of my models popping up under someone else's name quite a few times. Now I give nothing away. Shame really but that's life.

Proton,

Amid all this discussion on models, theft, and giveaways, I just wanted to drop a note of appreciation in here for the model packs you've released to date.

Normally, my LW time is spent on product viz, QTVRs and the occasional flying logo. Character animation and modeling is something I'm only just getting to delve into during my spare time.

So lemme tell you, it was an absolute pleasure to go through the stack of models you've released and find one that's a bit stick figure-ish to use as reference while attempting to build a character mesh (I chose the zombie model :D).

I was able to build most of a body mesh for my character in just a couple hours, and learned some cool things along the way (like the way you had the legs come out the side and bottom of the torso instead of just the bottom, how to get four fingers out of a hand that looks like it'll only offer two, etc.)

One look at the attached image will show you that I'm still a character modeling super-noob (heck, the poor guy doesn't even have a head yet! ), but having that zombie object was key. Because I'm a beginner at organics, a couple of wireframe pics alone would not have allowed me to analyze the methodology well enough to get through the tricky parts. Being able to spin the reference model around, zoom in, and turn subd's on and off was a major help.

So...

THANK YOU!

I would happily give away models of mundane objects, but there is something very personal about character models that I think would prevent me from giving them away.

cause i fell .. that if i give away something good...
the next tim i do something i have to do it better ...
this is for me a way of self imposed self improvement :-)

Usually I give away models I made to people who give me something in change, like tips, Tutorials and plugins, ( also the ones I have to pay for, as they usually are really cheap compared to their value) . Iīm wondering if my fly model will be in the next volume? Proton, when is it coming out anyway?
:)

This can only mean two things:

1. The Lightwave Community isnīt as sharing as I thought.

2. Hundreds of models have been sent in , but only 4 of them donīt suck.

Maybe you should post a new call-in-for-models-thread Proton.

I understand all the different points of view. To protect or not to protect.

IMHO, sharing models, procedures, workflow, tips is what this community is about. I happily post up my entire scene packages with my WIPs. Of course, it's easy for me (they suck). However, even when I get better. I'll give everything away.

Why? Because it was with all this free information from you fine people that I learned in the first place. I imagine others that have gotten very costly training in CG may have a different point of view and for good reason.

One thing to consider if people are robbing models/textures and posing them as their own (and this is as long as they are not profiting from this)-- they only hurt themselves and curb their ability to learn. And it's not really affecting the original creator-- certainly not financially. Personally, I think that's a great way of filtering out the CG community of beginners: 1) people willing to improve their art with dilligence and 2) people that are just dabbling with a pirated version of some CG software <-- they will go away once they get bored.
