It seems I have choose my idea. It's a very strange western. The action takes place in the far west. But something is really strange it is that most of the accessories (guns...) are replaced by living crustaceous or fishs, it's crustaceous city !
the main scen could be a ban attack so you can see some predesign for bandit and baner.

I've list some ideas of replacement but I really need your help to now what to replace.
For the moment here are my ideas :
guns replaced by (spiny?) lobster
spur by sea hedgehog
tie of the bank man by a fish
maybe lasso by murena
horse by giant crab
coins by shell

if you got more idea I'm here to listen.

heya Vincent, great to see you finally feel for the pressure and joined!

maybe some women can wear these things as headpieces:
http://www.safaricamp.se/MEDLEMSFOTO/manet.jpg

maybe an octopus(or several) as the big artillery, shooting canonballs from their "ink-hole"(between their legs) or just throwing them with their 8 arms!

maybe some fat rich ppl can ride turtles, and the bad guys on the crabs.

looking forward to see some more, i love western. the beige and green colors.. miam miam!

I keep my idea but I've decided to redesign my characters. I go bac to a style nearer from my usual style. I tried to made the old design in 3d but it wasn't as great as in 2d. MAybe be I'll change the height of this new characters (very much taller for a more adult impression) but I will see it in 3d.

thans guys for support. great to see everyone is here for this challenge.
Anders : some great ideas for me. thanks.

Here's a quick start on the head. I have made a simple base head but I hope really useful for animation. The hat and scard are really fastly done. It was just for a better look at the result.

I continue the modeling of the main character. I have not decided yet if will do a thing and tall character (surely better for animation) or a more small one lie on right version (where accessories will have more focus on them due to the size).

fellah
07-11-2007, 09:33 AM
in my opinion you are doing to many curves in your modeling on this one. i liked your quick, straight, harsh lines and corners mixed with some round parts in your concepts.

for example, the arms have much to many opposite curves. if i where you i would do them as simple cylinders.

i made a quick paintover to show what i mean:
http://www.andersehrenborg.com/TEMP/13273_1184103229_medium.jpg
maybe i did to much with the straight lines, but it is just to show ~ what i mean.

authentic
07-11-2007, 12:13 PM
Hi Anders thanks for comment. There are some very interesting things in your paintover. The position of the scard is very much better. I think you're also right about the arms even if I 'll keep something to symbolise the elbow (because I love elbow :scream:) but I will simplify after. For the shoulder I find it better with hard edges like you show but I have to see how it will react with animation.
The hair will come soon, and the hat wasn't really defined but that will help anyway.

The main difficulty is that I want a character really animatable because most of my old ones have too much limits (often because of enormous head). But I have to keep some stylish work anyway.
Big thanks.

Ok here's what I've done for the bank. It's a little conceptual, a little like in a theater.
Let me know what you think of it.
There will be some hippocampus logo (like dolars) on the bags. There will be also some little crabs or octopus in the bank. If you got some ideas too make it more crustaceous (maybe with modification of some props), I wait for your ideas.

mdavid
09-19-2007, 11:35 PM
It's wonderful to see this progress. It's a clever idea to use a conceptual theatrical stage - that will let us see things that would normally be hidden by walls. Perhaps a shell for a telephone handpiece or maybe a starfish for the handle on the safe. There could be a big flat round shell on the wall which could be a clock. These are only suggestions of course. I love what you are doing

Here's one animation (that I modified a little from the preview) rendered. It's not perfect (poping, lobster too much shiny...) but I'll go with this for the moment. if I'll got time, I'll change it.

ashiataka, melkao : thanks.

anders : I didn't want to do a so big project. I don't know if I'll had the time to do it well. Everything is done very fast. And so for the rendering, I would need a render farm :scream: I already lower my final resolution (I was in HD). So I hope to do all the modification I see on animation and render but that will be difficult. For the moment I try to have something finished.

The animations are fantastic. My favorite is the robber standing up to hold out his lobster. I did notice that the robber stands up very quickly and maybe if that part of the animation was slowed down a bit then it could be nice. But overall your animations are great fun to watch (again and again and again). I love the way things flop about and move - the movement matches the style of your characters. This stuff is wonderful

cool to finally see how it will look! :)
i wish there was one more eye on the crab in the intro scene visible, i had problems figuring out what it was for a while.
+ are the mussels/shells supposed to be money? if they are, try to make it more obvious. maybe by having more of them around the bags, maybe yellow/golden.. or piles of them like money piles(http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2995146/2/istockphoto_2995146_coin_piles.jpg)
if they are not money, what is he doing with them? :)

Hi anders.
Yes shells are supposed to be money. At the start I wanted to made the slow motion longer to show us the sell falling into the bag. But I didn't had the time (I go back to professionnal work), and I was not sure about camera move. I treid to make some piles like you can see on the previous post (with render) but it seems that I would need t make it smaller to have more. I'm not sure my computer will love that...
I'll see what time left allow me to do. Thanks for comment.

Mdavid, daddymack, melkao, hiun... : thanks

very nice animation, it has a cool sequence...but maybe...i don;t know, just a though...changing the shot when he shows the lobster, to get a bigger surprise!....perhaps, first shot from his back and he aim the other character(we don't see the lobster), then a front shot and camera bounces with zoom(now we see the lobster)...i don't know if i am clear...but anyway, is just an idea.

A long time ago, crustaceous city was a very urban city, with many citizens. It was one of the more dynamic city of the country. But a terrible invasion came from the sea and all the citizen had to run away.
Nowadays most of the invaders have leave the city too. There's still one citizen, a Banker who keeped the strange behaviors learning from the past.
But how would he react if one of the most famous bandit from the west open his bank's door armed with his lobster gun ?

IMPORTANT note :
This final version has no music because I wasn't sure about the authorization to use it. So to see the short with music and better compression (that's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) , you can download it at (right click - save as):
www.vincentguibert.fr/demoreeels/crustaceous_net.mov (http://www.vincentguibert.fr/demoreeels/crustaceous_net.mov) . It's a 45mo file.

For those who just want the music but with a bad compression to have a lower file (19mo). Download it here ((right click - save as) :
