The spaceships have been modelled in Wings3d, then exported as VRML2 in Blender. I used a new experimental version of Blender, "Tuhopuu", that supports blinn shader materials.

Interesting concep, quite orginal... hope they don't turn out to be like the egg-race ships from Jimmy Neutron :p
On the qritique side (if you want any) the texture of the lower planet is a little bland, I would make the craters and creases more pronounced, moon-like.
Also, perhaps the scene has to much light (IMO)? I guess that in open space you wouldn't be able to see the belly of the ships (there is not atmosphere to difuse the light).
Great work and very creative, as said before.

hummm.... just noticed a glish on the image... the light on the planet surface and the light on the ships seems to be comming from opposite directions.

What? The light looks like it's coming from some star above them.

The lighting just doesn't seem right for me, maybe I need to get my glasses checked

Env, since you are working with Blender, what about adding another spot light right where the main one is, and turn that second lamp into a shadow-only lamp, that may do the trick and get everything more defined.... just my $0.02
Wow, didn't cecked this post for a few and found a lot of replies.
Apollux, you are right about the opposite direction of lights for the moon and the spaceships. This happens because the texture for the moon is applied the wrong way... anyway I hoped none had noticed it!:)
I'll fix this and try the second only shadow spot, too.
About the spaceships bellies, I think it's a matter of choice. Not to see them would be realistic, but I opted for a more "warm" stile as Star Wars or Star Trek space scenes.

Humm... I'm not that good on lighting, but to me those films get the so called 'warmness' by usind cold lights (light glue and a faint green, sometimes even gray) to light those areas that we are supposed not to see. However, using such technique on your image will kind of spoil it. You could do a test shot and see how it looks, but first try the shandow-only thing.
By the way, it is likely that you will need to play around the shadow buffer, samples and bias settings to get the right FX, I don't know why but the default shadows settings allway seem to be wrong for me.:hmm:

Okey: added a nebula background, made again the moon textures to fix the shadows direction, made again the big planet textures too (maybe the earlier was better), modified the spaceships panels textures, put a second spot only shadow for the spaceships... what do you think?

Hi! I loaded both images side to side to be able to switch back and forth between them... Boy you made quite a big improvement from A to B.
Im my opinion (and my brother's opinion also) B is more rich and interesting than B :applause:
One last sugestion regarding the texture of the big planet. The colors in B are more delightfull, but on A one can see better the atmosphere of the planet. Perhaps you could darken those clouds on B so that the green color isn't so dominant. Other than that GREAT JOB!
Thanks!:p
Yes, me too think the big planet can be improved... I'm planning to add other elements to the scene and make an animation of it.
See ya!

Wow env, I like the new one too. Nice nebula background. I also like the reflections on the bottom of the ships, they look like light bouncing up from the planet. Looking forward to the animation.
