View Full Version : How to avoid legs jerks at straightening?

I have to edit many mocap data with running/walking characters.
The problem I come accross quite often is jerking legs - when a leg gets straight in the utmost front and back position. The rig gets straight and I have to set keys manually to correct the jerk.
Is there any setting in the character/rig pane or some other way to avoid this problem?

Ki-ora ,

Could be a couple of things .. firstly it could be the initial setup of your actor. If the actor doesnt have a slight bend at the knee in setup this will cause hyper extentions ,,the same applies to the elbows in the arms ,. If that`s not it and your sure your actor is of correct scale ect try having a look at your controll rig "Retarget Actor type" options .. i often find that very minor adjustments inside the "offsets" section is very useful - play with some compensations if your character your retargetting to is of very diffrent proportions., be very critical and scruitinize your ROM(range of motion) to avoid having a common fix in every animation ..

Hope this helped..

Just a note about the offests, you could keyframe the hip hight offset so you keep the snap from happening and also don't keep him to squat for the entire anim.

Thanks for the answers!
That's not the question of retargeting from the actor, that is quite OK, without hyperextentions. It's when I edit animation - insert poses to cycle it, add some keys, at some moment they begin to jerk :(. And I have to be very careful not to overlook that moment.
And I'd like to ask - is there any character setting, which does not allow the leg/arm rig to hyperextend? Which would correct the thing automatically?
Perhaps there is no such a thing... that's the question...

Thanks anyway :)

Ki-ora,

ok so it sounds like to me that you are having issues with underlying animation and maybe a lack of "zero" keys. Every time you lay a offset pose you have to remember that it will continue to offset that animation untill you set a "zero key" to set it back to follow the original data,... eg .. if for instance you were making a cycle and wanted the same pose at the begging and end .. paste that pose on frame 1 and 30 or wherever you may offset your animation),, then depending on how much difference there is between the poses you will need to lay a Zero key a few keys after to return that to original motion ie 7 and 23 ( you may need a few more depending on ur workflow in layers) , remembering that the motion capture is the data we really want to see the most of so return to it as quickly as possible with out ruining your data is best .. also u might want to look at then offsetting those zero keys by body parts ,, often you would like a part of the body to return to original data b4 others..
Hope this makes sense.. sorry if im telling you things you already know ,

Cheers

ammmm.. Yes, I bear that in mind every moment. That is very important to place zero keys in appropriate places:) I just was looking for some bits of automatisation in the process with the rig question, if you see what I mean. Anyway, thank you, your words are very wise!
