View Full Version : Removing Specular Highlights

does anyone have any miraculous techniques that help to remove specular highlights from photographic texture source material? right now, i'm working on a face, and the model's skin is a bit greasy, and the lights are positioned such that it seems like there are always highlights on the middle of the front facing parts of her face. she is also african, so the highlights are much more apparent, and there is a fairly noticable color shift as well. obviously, this causes problems.

i'm trying to avoid using the clone and heal brushes, since they tend to create patterns. i've also grafted skin from other areas, but it doesn't always fit correctly (such as under the eye, or on the lips). i've also tried adjustments based on certain values in the image, which tends to have less than desirable results so far, and i've tried burning the highlights down channel by channel, which is pretty painstaking.

so right now, i can paint out the highlights, but i'm just wondering if anyone else has a better way of doing it. help is always appreciated.

Hmmm that is a bit difficult. You could play around with the levels to take some of that white/specularity out of the image. Or perhaps make a copy of the original layer and do a high pass filter on that, then set that layer to Luminosity. Fiddle around with those settings. My 2 cents real quickly.

i've actually tried using the high pass filter in various ways, and it doesn't have the greatest results, honestly. right now, i'm down to a couple adjustment layers and painting masks for them and doing a little painting over the top to fix whatever is left. i can't say i'm terribly surprised that there isn't some miraculous way of fixing things (although sometimes high pass has worked on other things). i guess i'll keep doing things the hard way.

Try using the Shadow/Highlights tool, or the healing brush/patch tools. They work a charm.
