View Full Version : Combustion Architecture ???
I'm new to combustion, I've been using After Effects for some time and I have a little question. In After Effect, when you render a clip to RAM only the final output is rendered. In Combustion (according to the manual) every layer and Operator is sent to RAM for playback. My Question is WHY? Doesnít this use more memory quicker and take longer to render clips. Maybe Iím missing something here. What are the advantages of this type of setup?

When you hit the play key in the UI when your composite is loaded in the viewport, combustion will cache what it sees in the viewport plus it will cache all the layers seperately as well.
Yes this use more RAM however what this means is that if you made an adjustment to a single layer, combustion will only need to cache up that layer instead of every layer when you hit play again. The reaction time of the software will be quicker.
Combustion will scan through the composite while playing and only process the needed layers. Now when the RAM counter reaches maximum then combustion starts to recycle the RAM and gets rid of cached images it does not need.
This is playing in the UI during compositing.
There is also the RAM player (CTRL-SHFT-R). The RAM player behaves like AE. It only caches what you see in the viewport. Therefore you can cache more of the final frames for longer real time playback. With this method you can also savw the ram cache to disk as a movie file or image sequence.
