sebek27 03-22-2003, 03:58 AM i just bought a Polish magazine and it has a DVD on it with the full version of the oscar nominated "The Cathedral" by Tomek Baginski !! it's awesome, especially the eerie music ... wonder if I could legally post it somehow for people to be able to download it in divx format ??

Aye, it is truly awesome! Hope it wins at the Oscars!
But no, making it available for download would NOT be legal.
I'm sure the Tomek-dude wants as many people as possible to see his work, so if was legally possible for him to make it available for download, he would've already done it.
Part of it has something to do with the Oscars... there are some tricky rules, and a downloadable short can NOT win an Oscar for "best animated short".
...that having been said, the Cathedral already IS out there... -illegally, no doubt.
Cheers,

That release in polish magazine was a VCD but as Tomek Baginski wrote on one of polish cg boards (here is direct link to this thread in polish language http://www.forum3d.kom-net.pl/f3dbb/index.php?md=topic&o=&tid=9889&pg=1) in the begining of april oficial divx version will be out probably on www.platige.com. DVD version for collectors with great "making of" section will be released few weeks later (in the end of april)

hmmm... really ... I'm not sure. Appropriate informations should be shown on Platige website (www.platige.com) when DVD is released... But I'll try to find those informations and let you know :)

Fifty Percent Gray?

Only about half of Fifty Percent was available for download before it was shown in theatres from what I recall, just until the first suicide. It was only after the Oscars that Ruairi put the whole thing up online, or maybe after it had already become eligible for Oscar consideration by playing in theatres.

Cathedral sucked.
Beautiful visuals and technical prowess are nothing without a story. The long pans around the figure on the peak bordered on pain. I recall at the Siggraph Electronic Theater recap in los angeles alot of people around me going "ohhhh-kaaaaayy..." afterwards.
I wish some of the shorts could have a bit of a story instead of just being a thin plot just to show the pretty stuff you can model, poorly animate, and render out of MAX with your choice of third-party renderer.
I wasnt even that impressed with Mike's New Car, since it was just derivative of a feature. For the Birds was good i thought when it came out. A nice original short concept flawlessly executed. I would rather something with a good story and sketchy execution win, than something with good visual execution and nothing more than a concept of an environment for a story.
These should be short films, short stories - not tone poems..

well... amygdalae: I'm no sure that "short film" convention is to render precisely some directly understandable story. And trust me: if you can't find any sense of things the film is talking about, it doesn't mean that there is no sense or story in it at all:-) There are many ways to interpret whole story - they might vary so much every time you're watching it and (what's more) there could be another interpretation for everyone who saw the movie... Is this bad? I do like all those funny short movies in Pixar style but I do not share opinion that EVERY short movie ought to be simple and simply understandable even for kids... Otherwise, if somebody really needs THE ONE & ONLY explanation for this moody story he or she should read short story written by polish fantasy/SF writer Jacek Dukaj entitled "Katedra" which was the base for screenplay of The Cathedral picture. Unfortunatelly as far as I know it was published only in polish (but I could be wrong). :-) So my conclusion is: START TO LEARN FOREIGN LANGUAGES :-)) hehe :-D JOKE :-) Have a nice day !

i personally don't like it the most out of all the movies nominated, of course the pixar stuff is better, but he did do the cathedral all by himself I think, there is many people working on pixar stuff, i might be wrong.. and i'm not saying ALL just most... and I didn't say poles came up with it, cause they didn't but it was available much earlier then here, but i never thought about the surface area stuff you mentioned that's a good point..
let's get back to being artists...

IMHO this movie rox my world :buttrock: And with all that emotion and great visual feeling plus the superb sound I really can't grasp how couldn't the story throw someone on his knees :) I think it's quite breathtaking. And as for lack of good animation it's quite obvious that in large studios each employ works on him area of expertise, and Tomek made The Cathedral by himself........

Yeah, it would be good to see an individual win an award, admittedly.
I dont mean to sound so harsh. I would be very happy for Tomek if he won. Majority rules on these things, and I might just be one of a few who wasnt into it.

The Cathedral is great... and you are allowed to not like it. But saying it does have a story is BS.
And no Tomek didn't do it all by himself. But almost. :)

Tomek said a few days ago that there should be a Divx available for download by the end of April. The same goes for “the makin of ….” DVD.
The polish Magazine stuff is a VCD not DVD. At least that’s what Tomek said.

i agree with u. the storypart in the cathedral is really poor. i was really dissapointed when i saw the movie in cinema. great visuals... NOT BAD music (in my opinion even the trailer had better music illustration) but nothing more than that.
about the divx version... it's illegal... but even that i know that there are some sources where u can get it...

amygdalae: as it was written above OFFICIAL DIVX full version will be available soon in World Wide Web, and YES - currently downloadable file (via Kaazaa or DirectConnect) is illegal :-]
Disscusion about story seems o be pointless for me - some people are able to see widely & clearly deep and touching universal story, the others are not. :-) That's all...

no point in trying to hide the story if there is one.

Excerpts of the "Katedra" novel got translated into English and posted on the Jacek Dukaj's website:

They're a fascinating read, and I hope the rest of the story gets translated into English and published here someday.

Hey Jen thanks for that link. I have to admit that the story, or at least the excerpts were different then what I dreamed up after watching Cathederal the first couple of times. I'm very interested in reading the full thing. It sounds like the whole translation has been made.
The story has just been translated to English by Michael Kandel
Does anybody know where/how to get it?

Typo...? Or did you actually mean that?
I've heard lots of people complain about the story in The Cathedral, so obviously it's for some people, not for all. That doesn't mean it's "BS" to say it does have a story.
Don't you people like movies like The City of Lost Children, or "Underground"?
Surely you must appreciate that not all stories are painful travesties like The Core, Collateral Damage, Sixth Day, Armageddon, etc...? I personally love when stories provide subtlety, and a little food for the mind, instead of "THIS IS THE GOOD GUY", "THIS IS THE BAD GUY", "THIS IS FUNNY", "THIS IS SAD", and "NOW THE GOOD GUY DEFEATS THE BAD GUY"... and I think The Cathedral delivers just that. Call it a tone poem if you like, I still think the story rocks. :)

Just been reading the translation, was the whole story written in 2nd person? If so, is "the traveller" supposed to be the viewer?
I have yet to read a story that used 2nd person effectively. Most just feel like "choose-your-own-adventure" books :) .
I once saw a MASH episode that pulled it off though.
