Tyler: "I want you to hit me as hard as you can."
Norton's Character: "What?"

Rules
Read me!
- Have fun animating!
- Use any rig and any animation software you like.
- Animate with any medium (3D, 2D, or stop-motion)
- You're open (and encouraged) to post your progress here if you'd like any comments and critiques.
- No time/frame restriction on the animation. Just remember that the more complex it is the longer it will take to finish. Make it by the due date!
- You can do both topics if you have the time. Either separately or as one animation if possible.
- You may add time before and after the audio clip, but please do not change the timing of the audio.
- A separate final submission thread will be created. Post your final animation there. I'll make the thread a few days before the deadline.
- Textures and lighting are optional. Playblasts are acceptable. Just make the acting clear and easy to see.
- Use any resolution and aspect ratio... but keep the file size manageable. As for codecs, preferably one that's common like quicktime or windows media. My recommendation would be Quicktime.
- When posting for final entry please state which topic you are animating.
- Adding music is optional, just don't make it distracting.

We'll do this for about a month (July 1st - July 27th). Then we'll vote (July 28th - July 31st). We'll vote for the best animations AND suggest topics for the next challenge in that time.

Feel free to ask questions about the challenge. We're still looking to improve how the challenge is conducted, we're open to suggestions.

Tips:
-Don't know where to upload your final animation or WIP? I recommend using www.vimeo.com. Free to register. You get to watch a streaming flash video and if you're registered, users can also download the original video source.
-The audio can also be set to mono instead of stereo, that may help keep the file size down.

Thanks for voting for me guys :) (you'll each receive you money like agreed in the next few days ;) )

I think I'll try the audio-topic this time, although I really don't know if I'll have enough time to do something, since I also joined the Strange Behaviour CGChallenge. At least I won't miss coming by and looking at what you guys come up with. Good luck to everybody and have fun!

PS: Starting these challenges on the first of each month is a great idea.

Hey. As for your edits. The camera crosses the line. Moom should stay on the right side of the screen the whole time. Otherwise the cuts are too confusing. Cheers

SirRon

AnimAmaker: Yes, EarBrawley is right about keeping a character on one side of the screen. The 180 degree rule (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/180_degree_rule) is something to keep in mind.

Thanks Frotze for answering chindian's question. :)

that`t a nice start. Liked it so much . specially that it`s Moom :)). but as others have mentioned it above , it`s a must to keep that 180 line rule if you wish to have nice and stronger story telling and continuity. and also I saw too many cuts that u didn`t need if you come to the truth :). what I can say is per each sentence one shot is required maximum! unless you`re trying to have different expression in your scene :)

keep up the good works guys :)

Hey everyone,
this is my first challage here at CGtalk and my second post so iīm not very active here even if a know whatīs going on:)

An sure introduction of me comes here;

Iīm a 17 years old male from sweden, 18 in 2 month. Have doing 3d graphics about 1,5 year... not much animation at all and absolutly not charater animation! Just a few attations.
Anyway it took my around 2 days to get the resulat, not final( one more charater and some adjustment to that guy who is already animate)

Anyway hereīs a link:

Hi dempa89,
You got a very good sense of timing already for a first attempt at character animation (believe me, my personal first one was a lot worse). :) Anyway... here's what I think :

IMO, it's always a good idea to position your camera very early when animating, so that you can already begin working on good lisibility for your poses. Don't forget the camera view is the only one that really matters, and a pose that works right now may very well not from an other angle. Adding the other character, roughly in place, even if he is not animated yet, will help you get a sense of what works and what don't, and clearly establish your composition.

Now...One thing that bothers me slightly is the pose you used to emphasis the "as strong as you can". It's a rather common mistake to "mime" things in animation, and it looks very unnatural in most cases. Just try acting the clip, doing the same movements as your character, and you'll see what I mean.

Finally, I don't particularly like the part where the character "hides" his face behind its hand at the end. He doesn't like very determined to me, while that's the part where he should be the most. Your entire animation should be building up to this very last moment.

Well...that pretty much covers it. :) Hope it helps, and good luck for this challenge!

Thank you!:buttrock: I think the sound clip give me slice better grip of timing in animation!

I never realy thougt of to place cameras first, think that will be very usefull (and save some time to). And in the end of the animation I didnīt meant him to look determined, it was more like "Oh, how stupid can a human be" mabye it didnīt work as well as i hope!

And the "strong" pose, i donīt like it either but i did not figure out any other way to express that at the moment! Perhaps i will fix that one to the final verison.
And yes i know a real actor wouldenīt pose that silly in a film made after 2000:rolleyes:

Anyway Iīm pretty sure it will help me!

If it does not get in the way of the audio clip it should be ok. The main thing to keep in mind is to make an animation you would like to put in your demo reel.

Good reaction to the stepping on poop part. The sneaky walk looks fine too but it doesn't look like there's a real intention or purpose in the way he's looking around. To me it seems like he's just moving his head instead of being careful looking that no one sees him. You might have a better reaction when he steps on poop if he was looking behind him as he steps on it. The animation is decent, but you can push more on acting and story. I know that's hard to do, but I'm glad you're doing the challenge :)

My last wip : AudioClip (http://www.vimeo.com/242206)

You're probably past the blocking stage, but so far so good. I actually like that long pause near the end where the blue guy isn't doing anything, you can probably make a more interesting pose and facial expression to go with that moment of confusion.

hey, I am here now. See my try, almost done and give me the suggession, please! i want that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uYAAq3OJhI

Very nice. I think the guy on the right is taking a lot of attention away from the one on the left, even though he's talking. I'm more interested in what the man on the right is waving at. That's just a comment, if that was what you wanted then you did a good job.

Ok, here is my second preview...

http://www.vimeo.com/245371

It's still rough and no facial animation.
But I'm not really happy with it... any tips / suggestions? Thanks!

I agree with bubai that it's too floaty. There doesn't seem to be enough quicker movements from the guy on the left, especially when he says "I want you to hit me ... as hard ... as you can" the second time. I do like the guy on the right as he's moving away from the man.

Thought i'd start giving these challenges a go :)

Cool, keep going with it. Keep in mind on his balance though. After he steps on something and looks at his foot you can probably push his body to bend a bit more or at least have his head over the foot for balance. Like this.

Hi Guys, there is some good stuff going on... I just wanted to give an update on the fight club dialogue that I started.. I just finished the Blocking, it has been quite a challenge to find time for this, but finally got to work a full day on it.. tell me what you think! thanks

Pretty slick with the cigarette bit there, I like it. One comment I have is to loosen up Generi's shoulders, they're very stiff.

Keep up the good work everyone.

Ok, here a (small) update.

I tried different poses of the red guy at the end and now they are... at least better than before I think. ;) Also I started to animate his hands at the beginning.

Hi MoutMout, I sure can tell you what I think: :)

Good animation overall, but maybe you could rework your timing some more. All is very even, easy and smooth... there's not enough surprises. Like when he asks to be hit, his movements could be a little more fast and punchy.

Also, when the green guy says "yeah, sure", he leans too much forward, he's not balanced anymore. One solution could be to make him do a step forward, but... I don't know if you'll agree with me, but I feel he's already doing a lot of effort just to say "yes". Personally, I'd tone him done; just make him look at the yellow guy, turn a little, and maybe add a small movement to his hands, not more.

Finally, I really like the moment when the green guy doesn't move at the end, just before saying "what!?", but not really his reaction just after. To me, it's not really clear what's he is doing, if he's scared or what. I think you could rework that pose.

Good look for your job hunt. :)

Thanks a lot for your answer!!

I agree that when the green guy says sure his movements look very linear, I haven't see it so far so thx a lot for opened my eyes ^^

And for the "what", I don't know what to do with hands...maybe you have an idea....i have some, but i want him to seem scary and suprise at the same time...so it's hard to fine the right pose...

Thanks again for all the good advices!

cheers

Eyes are definitely one of the most expressive part of the body, you'd be surprise how much emotion flows through them only. Just look at how you animated the part just before the "what". The guy is not moving at all, yet a tiny movement of the eye at some point is far enough to make him alive, even funny. I think it's more a matter of finding the right face expression at this point, rather than a good pose.

Thanks again for all the good advices!Just glad to hear it helped. :)
