View Full Version : Coca Cola hand puppets
posmaker 07-01-2007, 11:22 AM This is a self promotional project I did recently. It had been in my mind for a long time to do some kind of short film with hand puppets and this project seemed to be the perfect opportunity.
It was done in Maya, rendered with Mental Ray and some post in Fusion.
The music was done by Daniel Tejerina (http://www.danieltejerina.com)

Thank you very much all for the nice words and of course for the front page, I´m really happy for it.
Regarding the production method for this piece was pretty simple. Actually I choose the hand puppets as the main characters to be able to produce quite fast avoiding complex setups.
From the first moment I wanted to have a one shot sequence. The set itself represents those old street theaters were people hidden behind made kids laught with the pupets. I wanted to give it a new look so I choose that building/window look because it matched perfectly with the shape and elements of the mentioned theaters.
For the animation I thought about the three "situations", drew a few poses and pretty much I animated it straight ahead.
The part that took me most of the time was to choose the right colors and lights. I wanted the "short" to be cute, as if is was for kids and I tryed many different color schemes until I found the one I liked the most.
For the rendering I splitted it in four layers, the building, the characters, the inside of the room (that was actually a 3D render projected) and the curtains. I was very happy with the result of the rendering with mental ray so I decied not to separate diffuse, fg, spec, shadows etc.
I added a little color correction and glow in Fusion and that´s it.
If you have further questions about the making of, please let me know :)
Thank again everybody again

dont get me wrong....i am a cola addict, but the whole thing felt cheapened with the product placement.
the eyes were great though
id like to see a break down of how you did this and maybe some wireframes

sweeet! (as usual)
Really nice animation, I love the render too.
Just the liquid of the coke annoy me. The next time try to animate the level of the liquid ;)
Anyway the shading of the bottle looks friggin' great, maybe I would add some drops on it, for a better feeling of fresh.
well, i'm looking forward for your news projects ;)

Really nice expressions on the characters faces and cool concept, I've always wanted to animate marionettes in 3d, but have not done it yet, so I'm glad you used puppets, maybe now I get inspired and start working on my marionettes hehe. Nice Job!

I think you did a great job Eduardo, however something that could help to improve the shot imho is the focus on the outside of the window. I'm not sure but maybe i've missed something, but I think if you should have the outside window defocused and inside focused plus having more atmosphere outside with the sun fog and glow like you have on the inside would be better. I was distracted by this. Just a thought but a job very well done on your part :) Thankyou for sharing.

Quite nice but it's a shame that you use this product. I have to agree that it does cheapen the animation.

An absolutely wonderful little story....I've seen a lot of your work before, I especially loved the other little story you had created with the two boys, loved the way the two boys were rendered and the emotions that you were able to portray, and again, with this one, although a lot simpler, it was great to watch.
A lot of fluid animation, brilliant lighting and a nice story....and I have to say, a good ad.
Really like the other work you've done as well.

Pretty cool animation there! The one thing I liked the most was the light directly in the front of the building, it really made it seem like the whole thing was a set. Great job
Haha nice stuff! lol loved it ;)

Hi there!
I´m really thankful for the kind words, thank you all :D
Quite nice but it's a shame that you use this product. I have to agree that it does cheapen the animation.
The original idea was to use the decaf coke as it was supposed to be a tv ad for kids but I finally choose the zero one because it is the one that is showing lately :( . If I find some time I´ll replace the label with the standard coke one.
It took me about two weeks to finish the whole thing, plus a few days more re-rendering some flickering issues. As I mentioned before the idea was to keep it as simple as posible, to spend the less time and jump into a new project :)
Thank you all again :)
Regards
Edu
