here's my first idea.
I had this in my head for quite some time already.

Alienesque robots invading earth and being kinda distracted... :D
(yeah, I know, they really look like TEH Aliens... :P)

Crits on how to improve anything are most welcome!

Nice sketch - maybe your alien could be in more of a New York Time Square sort of place reaching thirstily for the can of coke in the Coke advert! ;). Will look forward to seeing it develop.

Hello just a thought, I really like the idea its clever. But I would take it further and have more alians gathered around like they are almost watching a foot ball game after they got bored with destroying our planet, the city left smoking and in ruins, now its time for a little bit of lite hearted television! perhaps they could be watching the replay's of there handy work on the news and having a bit of male bonding, LOL.take it or leave it, I like your idea! :)

Ok, now I am getting somewhere.
I am totally going with this approach.

Thought long about how I could create an interesting setting for the Alien invaders and I came up with the concept of a japanese diagonal crossing like you see in Ginza or Shibuya.
I am also very thorough about setting up a functioning composition.
I have a very clear idea of how this should look in the end so I am pretty confident... :D

Lots to do from now on I guess. Stay tuned! :)

So here is some progress already - sky is done I guess!
I am figuring out how many Alien guys I should place and where/how.
I am afraid the focus is not as strong on the 'TV-Alien' as it should be. There is too much room on the right, but I don't wanna crop 'Spidey-Alien' out... :P
This needs lots of details still, all the broken cars, debris and people are missing yet.
Dunno, maybe I'll add a human-popcorn bucket :P
Any ideas about what should be on TV...? :)

Art2

Any ideas about what should be on TV...? :)

A commercial showing a line up of tight women's butts, heheh...

Cool idea Hideyoshi. Maybe add another alien at the right, looking over the shoulder of the one watching tv? And it also would enhance the contrast between the TV Alien and the others I think, if the others were fighting against Humanity's last hope. Maybe add fighter choppers and tanks, causing chaos. With the TV alien in the middle of it watching... erm, butts? :D

some more progress, tried to get a little closer to the golden cut with the TV Alien in better focus.
Long before it's finished though...
I need more Aliens in the background destroying the city.
Also still struggling with the general color scheme... :/

Ok, more details. I have added a crashed jet as a test, but I think it fits in well...
Spiderpig was just a stand-in for now, I am sure I will change that. I wanna have something original in there instead of 3rd party property (although I painted it from ref)... :P
I will refine the aliens once the city is done.

hey man, that`s a great idea
the buildings look awesome, very beautifull lightning and rendering
I dig the redesign JakkaS did; the aliens look less humanoid and Giger-like that way, but perhaps it`s intended that they look familiar to the viewer?!
my only crit on the scene you have here at the moment is quite a minor one: the two aliens in the background look a bit too small compared to the one in front of the screen (there`s just one street between them...)
I`m really curious how this one turns out, good luck

Haha, Jakub, wow, that is crazy cool!
No wonder, creature design master at work! :) Thank you very much!
That looks very nice! Guess, now I need to think some more about the alien design... :)
It seems I should try to get away from the overly Giger-Alien look (although I LOVE it soo! >_<)
I wanna keep some sort of elongated head since it fits in well with the image.

Also, Arnold would be a cool idea for the screen actually! Maybe I could repaint a movie scene from Predator or Alien, lol! :D

guterrez: thanks a lot, man! You made a good point there, I will fix things up! :)

Korendo: Thank you! Yeah, I will probably put in some people because it looks too empty without them. I will change the pig though... :P

I worked a bit on the right hand side, shown without any aliens here.
The screen is an overpaint of one of my own stock photos.
That round building structure is a 3D model which I composited into the image.
And the fire was fun to paint... :)

Ah, damn, I am starting to dislike the general color scheme...or it's the high color variation that is bugging me.
I might throw it all over and do a greenish tint or something.

Pretty nice idea! Colors are fine, also.

I understand so far, that one of the attacking monster rather like to watch TV than destroying, like the others do! The discovery of entertainment - saves the world. There is apparently a special kind of humor, you want to evoke.

Wish you all the best,
creativity, pleasure, inspiration and friends,

Karsten

omg, I have had enough for today, this is quite exhausting... o_O

Here is another area shot, I like how the 'popcorn bucket' idea turned out. Still need to change the alien's arm position - like he is about to grab inside the truck or something...
Also, the aliens are not at all fleshed out yet. I will save those for the end, when the setting is done. Had fun adding in all those made up billboards with stupid text. :)

Color scheme...? Ah, damnit, not really happy with is, but I will just finish it up and it's done.

Very nice alien design. Love the way you handled the debris and craters.

Hideyoshi
10-22-2007, 01:17 PM
Argh.
I was stupid enough to only now realize that there is quite a big perspective issue going on in my piece...

I was only concerned with the composition in the beginning so I missed out on seeing the flaw.

Below image shows the mistakes and a roughly corrected version. In the upper pic the foreground aliens are totally misplaced and look like dwarfs compared to the TV-dude...
Can't possibly go for the corrected version as is, since all the desctruction detail which is clearly needed, is obscured.

http://www.hideyoshi-ruwwe.net/images/messed-up_small.jpg

I could still justify the first version if I placed the aliens in a deep crater or something so they'd stand below horizon level...

At least I saw the mistake before anybody else did, hehe... :P

Ah, fock.

---
Art2: thanks, man! :)

Art2
10-22-2007, 01:22 PM
I always thought the Alien in the front was kneeling ;)
He could be a bit larger though :)

Duracel
10-22-2007, 01:36 PM
double post; damn lacking server

Duracel
10-22-2007, 01:47 PM
The "corrected" version is still wrong. The alien in the background is 'sitting'.

The one climbing the building on the right foreground is way too small, too(imagine how it would look like, if it would climb the building in the center; its about the size of the display)

If the TV-watching Alien stand up it would get near to the upper imageborder ... no place left to show standing units in the foreground.

Well big problem indeed(sorry noone get it until today; i didnt check this out). You have to go for a big decision. If you still have enough time this week, don't care yet done work.
But if not, your strong building-scenerie is holding the perspective ... so its still "ok", a bit confusing but nontheless the story works.

Hideyoshi
10-22-2007, 01:53 PM
Lars: jeez, you are so damn right! I forgot about the TV alien actually sitting, yes! o_O
And then, the climbing dude doesn't fit as well, sure! Something like this happens when you go for strong perspective distortion and underestimate the big impact that it has on scale and foreshortening, damn.
Pretty fu**ed up I say... :/

I will try how it works with the crater and scale up the climber quite a tad. Maybe also extend the canvas? Ah, I dunno, not much time left!
I can't live with the scaling issues though. Won't leave it as is for sure!

Thx for the crits, Dura! :)

Art2: yeah, that would justify some of the flaws, but certainly not all...

Duracel
10-22-2007, 02:30 PM
Other idea would be to scale down the tv-watching Alien and those two in the background ... its maybe the easier alternative.

Hope you get it in time. :)

Hideyoshi
10-22-2007, 02:44 PM
Dura: yeah, you might be right. But I don't want to make TV guy too small since the focus will get lost too much that way... I guess I will try to find a middle way!
Thx again!

Yo, finish up your own entry, looks very intereting so far! :)

Dekartdek
10-22-2007, 02:58 PM
Strange - that was never a problem for me. I assumed the aliens to be different, individual.
But of course it can't work as well if this species is supposed to be uniform.
I would suggest to give those aliens matched poses, like an animalic crouch, something catlike maybe - depends on what the essence of those aliens should be for you.

Stay tuned and good luck,

Karsten

ok, here is the 'crater version':
The perspective is somehow corrected now, I tweaked the scales of the aliens and also dropped the one that was closest to the viewer.
Need to slowly begin rendering them out now I guess... :)
Also, for a fresh look, I flipped the image for now. Who knows, I might actually go with this one? I feel, the composition works a liiitle better this way. However, I'd need to mirror the texts then... we'll see!

Art2
10-23-2007, 01:31 PM
I feel, the composition works a liiitle better this way. However, I'd need to mirror the texts then... we'll see!

Haha, there's always something :D

Yeah, The flipped version works better imo.
Your eyes are guided to the tv Alien by the two Aliens that are close, who are pointing and watching the tv alien.
You could flip the airplanes in the distance too, but it's not that important for the comp and readability.

Hideyoshi
10-23-2007, 02:51 PM
Art2: Exactly! Since you normally read an image from left to right, the flipped one is the better version! :) Right about how the foreground alien leads the viewer into the scene towards the TV guy. Ok, guess I am gonna go for it then...
Damn, I always have as few layers as possible. Most of the text is actually merged down, so mirroring those won't be too easy.. :/ At least I have the lcd screen on a separate layer, phew. :D

I just love the rendering style! It looks clean and believable - really well done. The main allein is in focus, but maybe he could be in focus more? If you would add one more strong perspective object leading to him - like those rails or some kind of passage in bg, but in front, above current 'bg aliens' not to cover them. This mirrored version is much better imo! more natural for from-left-to-right-readers. Another idea - maybe instead of rails some kind of laser beam, destroying base of building where tv is on. It's great front creatures are pointing to the strange one, but wouldn't it be more contrasted if they were vandalizing something? at least holding a piece of building in one hand. White stripes on crossing may be more reflective than concrete - maybe some stronger reflections near the strange alien would help?

I'm so love in your style, just perfect! Sorry for those randomly thrown ideas - just looking at picture and thinking chaoticly. I hope it helped, because you've got original theme! Best!

Ok, almost done, here is the left side with the aliens finished.
Need to work on last minute color corrections and depth issues and that's it! :)

A can of "Joker Kola", anybody? :D

Yeah, this is going to be BIG!

Just watch out the arm of the TV-Alien. The upper arm is rather short in comparison to the anatomy of the other aliens.

LOOOL, Remko, you cracked me up there! :scream:
"Macht der kracht mit der sein, mein freund" - this is priceless!!

I think you wanted to say: "Möge die Macht mit dir sein!"
screw translation software, huh?

Artdek: thanks! Yeah, the upper arm is a little too short. I wanted to have some foreshoertening going on initially, but dropped it and didn't bother fixing it. I'll fix it up a little!

:surprised Your kung fu is strong!:argh: Hahahaha... I can't tell you how much I love the details in your piece. You have been up and down and through the pits my friend, and you are still going strong. I wish you all the best and nothing less!

^^ macht der kracht is ace!!

Hey Hideyoshi you're getting there mate! Love the concrete ;)
Just one little suggestion if you still find time...the pose of the right alien in the background
(of your latest post) should be more dynamic. Right now it's a static humanlike pose.
I'd love to see him climbing up there more like an insect with a more dynamic pose like the
one in the foreground.
Details are sweet!

Goro: argh, you're right. Plain straight. You mentioned a very good critique point that could really help enhance the image. I didn't think of that, damn!
Guess you convinced me, I will try and see if that change is timely manageable and upload the final!

Hiun: lol, how did you know I do kung fu? I mean...for real? :) Thanks tons, my friend!

Phew, done!! :)
Thanks to Goro, I quickly fixed up the background alien and it looks much better now! Thanks, man, crit was gold! I can still learn a lot in regard to anatomy and poses etc...
Well, I will write up some more later (you are supposed to, right?), but for now, here is the title:

"Distraction Point"

little pun which works fine I think... :D
