This is going to be uber-quick - in and out before you know it (missus). Just for a laugh, really, as I liked the challenge idea.

After 30 seconds or more deliberation, I decided to do something surreal. It's called skyhook, it's basically an old farmer who decides to go fishing in his back field. As you do.

Got a quick sketch, loosely ref'd from a photo to get the colours. Now to block in the farmer and the fish...

Colour blocked in so it's just a case of adding detail and I'm done. Told you it'd be quick ;) I'll have another look at it tomorrow.

Wow!!

Very nice palette and a beautiful yet simple concept. I really like the atmosphere and feel of this as well.

Just curious though, what is the man supposed to be doing? I originally thought he was like flying a kite and the fish were the kite or something, but thing in his hand looks more like a fishing pole and another person mentioned a farmer. So is he farming the fish? Fishin in the sky? Flying a fish kite?

Hello!

I really like your sketches so far. Your concept is similar to Erilaz's (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=224&t=511816) but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing... Especially as he's going down the 3D route.

Just thought I'd give you a heads-up!

Started adding details on the grass and trees. Also gave the fisherman a basket (what, was he going to carry them home?) and moved him into the pic a little to improve the composition. Next I'll finish detailing the trees and background, then the sky, fish and finally the fisherman himself, in that order :)

Mmm... and how come my images are 70 - 80Kb on my HD, but when I load them they're now 1317.5Kb!? I thought the images in the threads were loading slow!

Goro
07-01-2007, 05:49 PM
Yeah I realized it too...they seem to be converted to bmp.... but why.

Anyways your pic is coming up really nice! You're moving fast ;)
Something bothers me about the composition...I can't tell what it is...maybe it's
the gap between the fishes and the fisherman.
When I look at the painting my eye can't decide where to look first. Fisherman or the fishes in the right corner.

Maybe it would be interesting to put the fisherman in the foreground. Much bigger so we can see his back in the left corner. (if it isn't too late to do so...)

Or you make the picture format more vertical (thiner in the width) to decrease the distance
bewtween fisherman and fish.

BaronImpossible
07-01-2007, 06:04 PM
Goro - now there's an idea! Hmm... I'm going to leave the fisherman purely because this is just a fun piece and I'm doing it quick, otherwise I would try what you suggest. But narrowing the picture... there's an idea. I'll mock that up and see what happens. Nice suggestions

BaronImpossible

I just cut & pasted the right side nearer to the left for a mock-up. To me, that looks a lot better, I think I'll do it in the actual pic. Thanks for that suggestion, Goro!

Hopefully once I get the fishing line in to link the fisherman and the fish then the focus issue should be resolved. I hope so, cos the line's going in last and I won't be altering it after that :)

Goro

Beautiful colors- you are blessed with a great colour sense! One thing I was considering though- do you really need the fish on the left? The triangular composition might be stronger if you didn't have them there, then you could focus on the farmer and the fish, with the farm leading your eye around. Just an idea. I think what you have right now is beautiful.

fellah
07-01-2007, 09:41 PM
amazing mood! but i can't figure out if it's a rifle or a fishing pole. my suggestion is to make it more clear so that stupid ppl like me won't have problems reading that ;)

Yrindale
07-01-2007, 09:49 PM
This definitely ranks in my top favorite concepts right now. You always use such great colors, Simon. I dig it. I think the edit you applied, as per the suggestion of Goro, helped a lot. It feels much more unified now. The composition with the fish does still feel a bit difficult for me, which doesn't make sense since it's such a simple design really.... but oh well. I don't know what I'd toy with in order to make that flow differently. Not that it matters a whole lot - I know you're not pushing overly hard on it in respects of it being a quick fun one :)

As far as quick fun pieces go? I think it's snazzy.

paperclip - Cheers, although I admit to getting the purple / orange / green colour scheme idea from a photo I found so this time it didn't all come from my head :) I know what you mean about the smaller fish, I've already subdued their colours but probably what I'll do later is make them small and bring them closer to the farmer. Thanks for the advice.

fellah - Cheers. At the moment it's just a black line, it will become a fishing rod, honest. I'll be adding it last of all (I'm not looking forward to painting the fishing line - curves are not my forte).

Yrindale - Thanks v much. I'll make a few changes later and hopefully, when everything's done, the focus of the piece should be more clear. Note I say "hopefully" :)

Vahn - Now that's a good question. I've always had a thing for flying fish, ever since I saw some film when I was a kid (was it Reanimator? I can't recall)

Steampunk - Cheers, glad you like it

drewfarr

It still looks quite fantastic.

I dig the concept. Its terribly simple, but it really works well for this scene.

StuntMan
07-04-2007, 10:21 PM
The subtle rainbow is fantastic, it's a magical scene! It really works for me, but for some reason I thought the old man was carving a fishing pole which could be more interesting than just fishing. Like maybe he noticed the fish in the sky and started to prepare to catch them? Or what about a sort of kite-fishing-pole?

Good luck, I really like this scene. It might be what one would expect to see in the competition, but it's got such a unique mood that it really stands on its own. The only thing that is a little off to my eyes is the yellow barn. I'm guessing that you wanted it to blend in more with the grass, but growing up in a farm community I always sawa dark red or grey wood barns. Anyway, keep it up!

BaronImpossible

Looks like your angler has better watch out for the shark, that beast is flying low... getting ready to turn and swoop down maybe? ;)

I'm in love with the 'stormy and sunny' light you've given to this piece, surreal and perfect.

Vitreous
07-05-2007, 10:03 PM
great start to the challenge and a really interesting concept, what kind of brushes do you use in painter? i love the program but sometimes find the brushes i use tio be a bit unweildy but you seem to have a nice balanbe between a painterly look but controlled use of the brush.

StuntMan
07-05-2007, 10:45 PM
One more thing... you might be able to put in some cloud shadows on the ground to further show depth and break up the big yellow spot on the ground. It'd also lend itself well to the stormy feel, having sun shining through on tiny spots and not everywhere.

i always had a strange relationship with fishing, although i never was a frequent fisher i always felt that in some parallel universe i was made for it. then again i perceive myself in many roles, but i guess that fishing is the only recurring one.i really like this piece because of this fact, its nostalgic but yet still full of wonder and mystery. defiantly one of your best works.

Thaldir - This fisherman's real experienced, so he's OK with the sharks :) Thanks!

Vitreous - Hi. Well, I'm using mainly one single brush here, basically a pressure sensitive oil variant I made myself. The more pressure, the more paint goes onto the canvas and the less the paint bleeds. Apply a small pressure and it acts as a blender, putting down almost no paint at all. It also has pressure sensitive grain and RGB colour variation to give a more painterly approach.

StuntMan - Cheers, that's a good idea. I'll bear it in mind.

W-I-L - Heh, you may be right there ;)

Kei-Acedera - Thanks a lot!

Great one.
Maybe you could improve the sky, cause at the moment it seems to be
a little bit sketchy, done with only a few brush strokes. I dont mean, that
you should paint big overdone clouds, but i think they should be more significant.
Anyway,its a big piece!
And i would be glad to see another one ;)

Wow, awesome. Judging for the time it took, you could do some dozen more. It's fantastic man..., I hate you bastard...

You take the piss, you know that. They should call you baron impossible..o wait.

I couldnt disagree more with yakonsuke. The sky is perfect. It sets a really calm yet errie mood which compliments the idea perfectly. I Don't want to lay it on too thick but your image is striking and there is just something great about the mood. Well done.. can not wait to see your next image.

makaron - Thanks :)

Nigio - Thanks, good luck to you also

Art2 - Cheers. I probably will, though ;)

beelow - You got it. I'll starting thinking about a new one this week.

yakonusuke - Thanks for the input. Well, I deliberately left the sky like that so it wouldn't draw attention away from the characters. Maybe in the next one I'll do a more dynamic sky!

Ramitxon - Ha! :D Maybe not a dozen, but I should be able to manage another one or two.

icedeyes - Thanks!

zweiDee - Ah, you like Weapons Factory  I did it as a really quick piece but I thought it turned out OK considering.

W-I-L - Thanks v much, glad you like it. Hopefully the next one won't disappoint (I'm trying to think of something non-comic but which fits the brief!)

Nemesix - Cheers, and glad you enjoyed it

Nooo .... i knew you get me wrong, but no problem i`ll try again :) :
I didn't want you to make big dramatic clouds or anything like this, no , its perfekt like it is, but the way the few smudges were made seem (for me) to be improvable. A bit smoother , more cloud like . But it doesn't really matter. It was just a thought.
keep it up. :)

whoaaa! r u kidding man? already on a finish line? u r fast
The entry sure is awesome, colors and everything works so fine, to topic is top notch. But I'd think of puting those sharks in the back more forward. Its too bad they r hidden somewhere there, I just didnt notice them until I saw a close up. And they r painted so well as well as they add to the story. Just a thought nad cant wait to see ur next entry :D good luck!
