My drawing professor always played the flaming lips. It was very relaxing.

Well, there are words, but they are not at all obtrusive. I would suggest Enya. I listened to her music once trying to get to sleep in a hotel room with an ANNOYINGLY LOUD fan thing. Quite soothing.

I know you asked for some calm music.. But how bout giving some breakcore/ IDM a try.

Fast/ melodic / electronica done right is all i can say.. I listen to this kind of stuff while drawing pretty much 100% of the time. You can download full albums and all tracks free from

www.megaangelo.com (good calm one is an album called vidiot, few other artists avaliable all downloads free mp3 format)

other awsome artists you should check out

aphex twin
square pusher
venitian snares
amon tobin
autechre
chris clark

really odd but I truly agree that music influences your drawing.

Calm music does seem to help when drawing. I personally listen to New Age music from Sky.FM (http://www.sky.fm) when sketching.

When modeling, though, I prefer more faster paced music. At the moment, I'm interested in anime so I've been listening to Kawii-Radio (http://kawaii-radio.net).

Music is a very powerful piece of multimedia: it molds our emotions effortlessly.

Listen to Helios, albums "Eingya" and "Unomia". Other than that you could try Between Interval "Secret Observatory", Electronic Forest, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar Fields, Aes Dana, Puff Dragon, Cell, Alpha Wave Movement, Fahrenheit Project, Ochre...or simply gon on live365.com and check out ambient.us online radio...

Dispatch... my favorite album by them is Bang Bang, its good carefree music to listen to. Though it has words, the music and beats are very interesting and unique too.

I guess that music is not good when you draw, you loose concentration because of it... At least my drawing mentor think that way, and I alredy read about that in drawing and animation books

I agree with that. Try to work without music, I think that results can be better in this case

Well, anyway, all this is my humble opinion )

I was watching a gnomon dvd earlier today, vol 1 by Feng Zhui OR visual story telling vol 1 (I saw both so i'm bot sure which one it was in) but one them said that you pretty much always should work with music. It helps you relax more and even though you are concentrated when you are drawing you're not too concentrated. He said that his brain gets a bit too tired without music and just being concentrated at drawing after about 30min-1h. And I have to agree with that, it's just too quiet without any music.

Another good band is "Bliss" pretty hard to find anything they've done though.

I'd really recommend Air if you're looking for something calm. They are mostly instrumental I think but i'm only familiar with their album "Pocket Symphony", which although is not completely without lyrics I find it soothing. Besides that pick your fav jazz or classical (miles davis, "Kind Of Blue" for me). Or try complete silence, might work better. who knows. Hope that helps.

Peace.

I watched Hero [2002] recently, then decided to download the soundtrack, it's really nice, instrumental and slow :)

I also don't agree that listening to music while working is a good idea. You can't do both things at the same time.
Either you're listening to the music, and therefore not fully concentrating on your work, or you're fully concentrating on your work and the music becomes nothing but background burble.
I respect the music I listen to a lot more then to treat it as background noise.
As for music 'helping' while you draw, that's all just your misperception. You're really just filling your own prophecy there. Call it a placebo effect.

Oddity also has no art or posters on his wall, because they would just be "background decoration", and he wouldn't fully appreciate them, and he clearly has more respect for art than that.

As posted posted before APhex Twin is a genius. I would definately listen to the cd selected ambiant works vol.2. This cd is great for inspiration.

The most relaxing music, for me, is classical/jazz/spiritual. So anything from Mozart to Bach may help ease your mind into a highly-productive creative state. Kings of Convenience, which is a group outside of my mentioned genres, are quite relaxing too. I also like listening to Norah Jones, John Mayer, James Blunt, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys from time to time. It all really depends on what type of emotions you are trying to get out of your art.

So, in closing, I say, "Go with your intuition." Go through a whole bunch of songs, pick the ones you like, put them into a playlist, and then play them whenever you need to be stimulated.

Hope this was of some help!

Take care

Classical music and soundtracks are always a great choice!

I just got hold of the Lord of the Rings complete recordings issues [ROTK alone has 4 cds of music]! They include all music recorded for the 3 films [extended dvd stuff included]... hours and hours of amazing score :) Highly recommend it!

My favorite chill-out working music:

Anything by Biosphere, especially later works.
Harold Budd. Yes, he's done a a lot more work (and better, imho) than that Eno album way back when. "Avalon Sutra" is a favorite (and has a bonus disk containing a 70 minute remix of 1 song!).
Pop Ambient series, issued by year. These are all awesome.
Anything by Stars of the Lid. Soothing guitar/drone/ambient tunes.

More ambient/mellow recommendations:

I have tons of this kind of music, but I'm trying to limit my suggestions to just what stands out to me over the years, the stuff I keep going back to. Though this first suggestion is relatively new:

If you like Cocteau Twins or Robin Guthrie's solo work (which is all pretty great ambient/ethereal works), check out "Before the Day Breaks" and "After the Night Falls", two separate disks that are collaborations between Guthrie and Harold Budd. Very much in the "Moon and the Melodies" style of production, though all instrumental.

Budd's double CD "Transluscence & Drift Music" is awesome, too.

One of the classics I keep going back to is Loop Guru's "The Fountains of Paradise". It has one of the best soft-trance workflows ever, and I can't get enough of the weird muted vocal samples, especially the one that sounds like William Burroughs saying something like "...and leaving your human animals to be eaten alive by the crab people". Good stuff.

Then there's this really odd podcast called "Framework". Each episode is an hour of recorded compositions that aren't quite musical, though they have a haunting, almost rhythmic feel sometimes. They are compositions of field recordings that are arranged into little vignettes. Very interesting if you're into found-sound or field recordings.

Then there's the Conet Project, a modern classic. Look it up - it's one of the most fascinationg recordings ever.

Lately I've discovered that baroque opera is perfect - especially recommed Phillipe Jaroussky, excellent for concentration!

I usually listen to MOGWAI and MONO, Japanese prog rock.Mostly ambient blends with riffs and minimal inconprehensible lyrics if at all. It's powerful. Sigur Ros and Zero7 are cool too.Biosphere get's me really going.Like an ACME factory.Theivery Corporation and anything by Brian Eno.Massive Attack. Jeff Buckley is perfect for painting.Very inspirational. And when modeling, The Mars Volta and Deftones.

I'd say it goes with the task. Just before starting spend some time trying to find some music that conveys your present task. This way you can make music work with you instead of against you.

From time to time it's also really good not to listen any music at all. This way you can try to fill up void with nothing but just your ideas.

Hope it makes sense,

Juan

Why don't you try some of Enya's music, if you like music that sounds like a fantasy soundtrack, I really recommend it :)

I recommend some nice Japanese enka especially ones by Akina Nakamori. Classical music (Tchaikovsky, Bach, etc.) also helps me to get into "drawing mode" too.
