Hi Guys,

Here is a very quick sketch of my story idea.

The story is about a very curious character names Polkarella (the guy in a umbrella) He goes wondering in a garden to see its beauty. He is mesmerized. Suddenly a bunch of weird looking small garden creatures points under his umbrella and laughs like there is no tomorrow. Polkarella gets really confused and embarrassed and retracts his umbrella and rushes out of that place.

That’s about it. I'll post some more character concepts real soon.

Gimmi ur thoughts on it

I glad you came up with a story for this guy.... but the story should have more of an ending. Like whats under the umbrella? or maybe it starts to rain an the little creatures needs his help to stay dry? Or maybe he opens his umbrella to try and be as pretty as the flowers and something falls out and thats what everyone laughs at.... Just some ideas, but you should really work on a more concrete ending. I think it would really help.

_slangford

overcontrast
08-03-2007, 04:22 PM
slangford: Thanx for the comment man. That was just the general idea. I'll be working on the story more. As for the ending i think its there. If u have read my story post then u'll notice the story idea begins with the character entering the scene, then soemthing happens and he leaves the scene really embarressed. So now i have to work on the gags to make it more funny and... well... strange. Thanx again for ur comment and ideas.

macling
08-04-2007, 08:15 AM
I like this groteque character concept!
And the idea that the little creatures could laugh about sth. they can see from below/under the umbrella. I'm curious how your story develops.

Here is the storyboard. It got most of the ideas for the animation. Although there seem to be a lot of boards in it but the animation wont be longer then 1:30 minutes. Do give me your thoughts on it...

Hi mate,

I try to avoid to type a fanpost here. but honestly am impressed by your characters and sketchez. Storyboard was a bit cloudy for first. After i read your previous comment on that it's absolutely clear now.

I was thinkin' what can i tell you. Honestly i see lotsa entries here most of them are strange, or characters are strange, but where is the strange action? I ask this question time to time. In your entry there is a great potential to create something stunning. What i mean exactly?

Now you have strange and funny characters. The action itself is funny too but not enough surprising right now. Ok try to share my idea, but have to dig in my english :hmm:

1. Umbrellaguy playin around.
2. Creatures watch him
3. Startin' crowdin around him (laugh etc..)
4. weather turns rainy
5. Creatures start crowdin under him..
6. They recognize this guy is so funny.. (from below)
7. Umbrellaguy surprized by rain (he really don't like that)
8. he closes himself and escape..try to avoid to be wet ( scared as hell..rain..oh noo, what will happen with my beauty...)
9. Creatures stay in the rain and laugh... cam out :)

Sorry mate if i missed here something and wrote a helpless post. Just personally think this rain thing can add an extra plus. I think an umbrella who scares from rain..is a really strange action and behavior.

Thanks for your comment on my thread too. Best luck in the challenge :)

Mark

Next time I'll probably come back with some color exploration or models.

Till then... have fun

macling: Thanx for the comment buddy.

DaddyMack: Thanx man.

Tremoside: Hey thanx for the nice review and ideas buddy. I actually thought about the rain Idea at first. But dropped it bcause it was lenthening the story a lot. And on the other hand the STRANGE BEHAVIOUR in this story is the little creatures laughing at the bottom of an umbrella. What can be under there that is so funny right? And the way I'm picturing the creatures laughing in my mind should be quite strange. Lets see what i can do about it. \

Thanx again for ur nice comment. Ur doing a gr8 job with ur entry!

Wayne jermaine: Thank you pal!

Yet another storyboard edit.

Some of the guys here and some people who saw this, suggested that i bring some rain in the story. I thought about this when i developed the Polkarella character but i thought it would make things complected (FX and all). But tonight i sat down to actually think how i can put the rain in this stroy but also make it simple. So I came up with the idea of dropping only one drop of water on Polkarella and make him go nuts. I thought that would be funny and then through another gag as the small creature looks at Polkarella's bottom and laughs their heads off.

So please tell me what you guys think about it, I need some feedback this time!

Hi overcontrast! I went through your storyboard and I like your idea about the clip!
Really cool! Your drawing style is very nice and fresh!
About the rain, you wouldn't have to worry about doing it in your 3d package, where
it can easily be achieved whitin most composition apps like After effect or combustion!
Waiting to see how this will turn out!
Good luck!

fellah
08-14-2007, 12:14 AM
wow that's the coolest thing I've seen in a while, you are very talented Zubuyer!

i have one suggestion. ATM the cloud is rather distracting and takes to much focus in the pic. almost more than the character itself(to me at least)
by lowering the intensity/contrast(as it is far from the camera. with the current strength it looks like it is close to the cam) a bit blur and maybe a few other clouds with different strength to help give a little depth.
here is a quick pic to show approximately what i am trying to say

looking forward to see more!!

C&Cs would be nice.

They're way cutesy mate, just wondering about their personality because atm they look a little generic... The ridge around the outer base of their eyes makes them look mildly stressed but that's all I could get from this first pic.

Distinctive style and expressive look on those mushrooms! No crits at all other than
perhaps giving each a slightly different personality than others, by just repositioning
eye pupils!

DaddyMack: hey daddy! yeah thats because they are just copy of one model... it was to show there will be a group of mushroom.. so later on in the shading phase i'll give them more distinct personality.. u kno, one smart one dumb and one confused kinda thing lol (so cleche!) abt the eye bag... arh i'll keep em anyways, let them be a bit stressed out lol i like the idea of making them look a bit abnoctious. But yes there will definitly be veriations in the look/personality. Thanx for the comment buddy!

melkao: Thanx man.. yeah the old mario bros days!... does bring back some nice memories and some bad ones when after a hundred tries I cudnt finish a level hehe.

Versiden: Thanx brada... appreciate it.

csdani: Thanx mate!

varma: Thank you bro! yes they'll have distinct look in the final image/animation.

Wayne jermaine: ummm okay but just one... i need them to play roles in my animation. So you can only have that little one, hehe... that one is for both of u and ur girl-friend lol... thanx for droppin by my friend!

ania: Thank you. Yes i'll surely do that, thats just the generic models, more personality will be added when they'll be animated... thanx for the comment.

I love your models, great idéa!

About your storyboard, do you need the intro? Could you start right at the umbrella figure, walking about beeing happy, then the rain comes, and suddenly all cinds of creatures come running to his schelter. -straight to the point, and less work for you. And also, would it be fun if one of the characters fainted?

Keep it up!

Hi,

I watched this animation few thousand times :) It's awesome! My only idea about this is one small thing: Adding a morph (blendshape or what :) ) to the chest? Right now head is cool, bottom is cool, cap also with those gentle movements. But the body works just as a simple connection as a spline. It can also play the role if you play something like breathing. If he is scared he should take a deep breath for example. Or like a huge visible heart beat. Whatya think mate? Hope it's a good idea and helps to make the already high quality work to be unbeatable :)

Wow Z! I really like the measured use of color here, the way you've blended the shell pink into the ears etc. I liked the darker edgier rings around the eyes more than the blended ones on this character. They are stylemarkers in this piece for me and really contribute to the overall cheekyness you're evolving

Hi guys!

Sorry for the long pause... I was busy with my job in the day and in the night I rigged the characters. Still one to go. I'll be done with it soon and the start the animation process. I also worked on the background environment, I'll keep updating that while I'm animating.

So here is the Shot planning for the animation. I like to keep the concept as clear as i can while animating and it helps to reduce experiment time (which i don't have). I'll post the first blocking as soon as possible (probably tomorrow of day after tomorrow).

DaddyMack: U said it man.. this **** is gonna **** me real bad! :deal::banghead:

npantic: Yeah, i tried to estimate a safe time... u never know the fall backs... I actually thouhgt about rendering it in a higher resolusion (like in HD) but I guess its gonna take way longer to render... so insted I'll render the final cut in 720x360 and fit it in 640x40 for the final submission. Thanx for the post.

melkao: Thanks buddy I worked really hard with the colors for that chart. It was spacially difficult to seperate the two tones of color and make it look pretty also achiving the correct density for the black lines was very hard. I was confused about the font but I think I made a great choice. hahahaha just kidding man... thanx for the post!

Wayne jermaine: Thanks mate!

thebest: Hey hows it goin man... I first estimated the freme count then multeplied that with 3 (3 minutes for each freme)... but thats a rough estimate. It might take longer or shorter time. Thanx for dropping by!

The style is a bit like Tim Burton, but warmer and definitely your own.

That's a cool composite of the shots! Your stills from environment and about characters are very promising as i mentioned before. My thoughts were the following: (i've watched this short few times to check :).

Idea one:
Maybe some of the shots are slow a bit. it's the laugh scene. The first laugh's timing looks cool. I feel how the creatures holding back their laugh. It's a bomb for sure, but after the first laugh camera changes look just few frames slower than neccessary. Dunno , just feel that. Probably more fast, almost still shots about Polkarella could make the action-reaction cleaner and more readable. It's hard to say without a blocked out animation on each characters, but hope my opinion is helpful.

Idea two:
When Polkarella looks over the crowd a distorted camera lens should be exciting. A bit of barrel, or fishy. The difference between P. and them could be more weighted with that. They're already funny. It's just an extra to view them via a twisted cam.

Idea three:
For better understanding the situation of the raindrop:
It's an important event/action. As P. browse the crew, their eyes should change look target from him to the sky. It will prepare viewers to an other action. A new shot of the sky with a tiny black cloud.. just simple. After the sky/cloud shot P. can react. And then the drop. With this the happenin' could be more concentrated I think. You already have a nice sky setup not too much to do if you like the idea.

Idea for:
probably not all the creatures should lagh directly on him. I mean.. Usually in a group some of the audience turn away as they try to hide their act, as they laugh. Maybe one of them could be a shy one. They're watching somenone's.. you know :) Probably the flower creature. Or one of the younger mushroom change colour, blush red.

Ok, enough from me, i was just excited about this step from you. I don't wanted to disturb just enjoyed to spend some time on the possibilities.

Üdv,
Termo

Tremoside: Wow there! that was the biggest reply I had on this thread... thanks so much for taking much of ur time to write this. OKay so, abt the shots being slow... yeah I agree some shots might look slow cause there aint any animation it them. As far as i can tell from experience after animating shots they look, wats the word... 'speedy'.
About the barrel cam... I'll try that out :)
About Idea3, well, I dont really wanna show the dark cloud btw, isted i'm gonna make the whole environment go darker and less saturated, and as u talked about the creatures looking up (the anticipation) actually polkarella does that so lets not repeat the action.
Finally the laughing scene... I want them all to be nasty cretures who laughs at ppl's mysiries. I'll make them laugh even harder... In the end shots might get changed depending on situations... and shot timing is also a variable that might change through outthe animation process... hope in the end it'll be a funny thing to look at... thank you soo much for ur amazing ideas... keep em comming, they're my inspiration. thanks again!

I'm not a fan of the opening of the shot tho... Zoom, stop, char enter... Maybe a shorter distance, slower zoom that rides thru all the way to just before the Ecu shot?

hey Zubuyer

ye, time is running out.. I think choose the shots that u think u want to spend more time on and polish, and maybe after the challenge go back and fix it properly..
the shot is looking good, the timing is good ;p

just a few comments if u have the time.
1. try having the character dip a little bit more before moving to eat the cherry (around frame 20). The head is dipping slightly, but play around with exaggerating it a little more, maybe even the chest moves slightly down
2. right arm/hand, have it move in more of an arc between 24-29
3. frame 42, have a slight mini anticipation on top of the anticipation u have.. so it's the anticipation for the main anticipation.

yeh.. good luck man, hope to see u finish, this is one of my favourites!

A friend of mine is gonna help me out with the music. I would do it myself but the time constraint is a bit too much. I'm thinking about total cartoony sound with this. Main instruments should be Acordien, xylophone and trumpets. But lets see what goes well with this one.
