View Full Version : Explosion FX or Explosion?
Kotayus 03-21-2003, 09:12 PM A friend brought something to my attention that the explosion effects in cinema arent that belivable...i messed around with it and concluded, its to polygonal ...any ways to make belivable explosions?

subdivide your polygons, break them up in uneven ways. this is exactly the same way you ahve to do it in every package so i don't know what your friend means. explosionFX just makes your life a hell of a lot easier, if you want something to look like it's really being blown apart you have to break up the mesh in ways that explosionfx will be able to make good "bits" with. if the mesh is too even, then all explosionfx can do is make bits that are even (or cluster of even square bits).
if you want to make a good explosion you will have to do the following:
firstly, break up the mesh around teh area that gets blown up in a way that will be interesting.
secondly, add in a few good visible lights for the explosion core.
thirdly add a heap of particles as you will want lots of micro debris being blow apart at the same time
fourthly add in a lot less particles, but use pyrocluster, or sprites (theres a tutorial on my website in the renderzone section about how to do this), for the large smoke clouds.
fifth, if you want to be trendy you can add a "shockwave" ripple throughout the structure of your object using a deformer at the point of the explosion (kinda pupolar now, like the old praxis shockwave was before).
sixth job the camera around a bit as the sshockwave hits the cameras position
seventh, for added realism you can also morph the original object during the explosion, so that you end up with some twisted bits once the smoke and debri have cleared.
good luck, and have fun, remember timing is everything.

that was great...i just knifed up the object and it wasnt so puzzle like...great, and i had thought of PC and particles, but with puzzle like pieces, it still wasnt very cool.
I like the idea of a shockwave, would it be possible of a better explanation? or possibly a scenefile? that would seem to make it not so much "belivable" but give it a dramatic effect.
thanks sadie thats about the detailed expinlation on how to make a good explosion then I have ever seen before.
ohh and if you have the star wars DVD look at the THX thingy before the movie that isnt really a "real"explosion either and i bet they were using maya.
