Hi gang, it's that time again, still waiting until cgcommunity.com becomes live :)

The official deadline is April 5TH, 2002 - MIDNIGHT EST TIME this gives pretty much everyone across the globe a full day to finalise their entries...

as for the submissions, the current thumbnail page will be the basis for your votes, there will be no need to send your images anywhere so this is what is needed

- all challengers that wish to be considered for voting
MUST SUBMIT THEIR 3D/2D THUMBNAILS HERE (http://www.cgcommunity.com/cgc_mar_thumbs) (please read the text on top)

- if your entry is not on this page by the end of the challenge it WILL not be included in the voting list

- voting will commence in the same fashion as the last challenge using the thread polls, I know this is cumbersome but it's the best we have at the moment

- when voting you would visit the above page (http://www.cgcommunity.com/cgc_mar_thumbs) to think about the artist you wish to vote for

- there will be a Submit your vote button there by that time

- once that button is clicked you'll be taken to the thread poll where you can cast your vote for your favorite entry

- each category will have their own poll threads, so there's no confusion

Like I said b4 I know this is cumbersome, but until the final release of cgcommunity, this will have to do for now....

good luck everyone

Cheers

The new challenge topic will be posted on Sunday April 7th and won't officially begin till the following Monday, April 15th...

also PLEASE refrain from starting the new challenge until this forum has be ported over to the archive, this is very important, or else your April topic might end up in the archive section :)

Starting Date of April Challenge Changed

Hey everyone, please note that, in order for everyone to catch their breath and recover from all the incredible work done in this months challenge, the powers that be have decided to give everybody a week's break to recuperate and prepare for the new challenge.

So please notice that the new starting date will be 15 April

Forgive me if this has already been answered elsewhere.

Will there be a "Suggestions for April's topic" thread started, or are the Mods just going to pick something independently?

I have been noticing people adding more images to their Entry threads after the deadline of the 5th. I figured all the threads would be locked after the deadline.

Just a heads up. :hmm:

I don't think new images are a problem as long as the modeling has stopped. This months focus was on the modeling not the image, so extra shots after the deadline just give people a better view of the modeling.

Verminator is correct, the modeling has stopped, the image can continue to flow until voting ;)

What is the point of the Deadline then? If we are judgeing on the merits of the images we produce, rigging, lighting, rendering is part of the building process. I know that bad lighting and or Bad rigging can destroy a model.

To conclude, in my experience most Deadlines are final.

judging is based on the model (or it's supposed to be) not the image.

So this is a "Modeling Contest" and not an image contest ?

P.S. In my opinion modeling is really only about 1/3 rd of the work required for any still image and not even that much for an animated sequence.

I have to agree here... I've found it a little odd since the challenges inception that the voting would be "based on modelling". By that respect only OpenGL viewport grabs should be entered... We all know that a nice GI render can make things much easier on the eye (not a bad thing), but it can also make a sphere look real... :p

I (still) think that it's odd to say that it's the modelling being judged, sure - no textures is a pretty obvious thing to follow, but I think when we all vote we do so on more than modelling. We decide based on design, skill and simply how nice it looks.

Anyway, have to say I found it odd that people could keep putting up nicer and nicer renders of thier models - it makes for lots of lovely stuff to look at... but when's the cut off! :wip:

If it is about just modeling I think that the final post for everyone should have been a unrigged model in whatever default pose you built it in, with a predetermined light set-up, and a defined set of images (eg. front, back, side and 3/4). The final set of images would then be posted on a new thread and judgeing the winner would be souly determined by that.

Besides, don't try to tell me it is not about the final image, it's always about the final image.

I agree with everyone who is smart. If you have a contest with guidelines that must be followed then surely we can agree that completing a project before the set upon deadline is the only way to ensure a fair and adaquit judgement of all who enter.

p.s. you are all poo.:wip:

Ok wasnt this challange just for character modeling and no environmental or textureing added to it? Cause i have seen lots of both. People adding thigns to intereact with the character that is not part of the character? Am I wrong in what I thought this was supposed to be?

I agree that there are too many misconceptions taking place and that based on the original challenge, many have gone above and beyond the rules. I however, don't really think of that as being bad. Maybe the rules could be layed out a bit more precise.

For example, maybe there could be different winners for each challenge. One for modeling, lighting, character design, and artistic theme, etc. One aspect of the challenge that I think is lacking, is judging according to how the picture displays the theme chosen. The March challenge had an awesome theme, yet I don't realistically see a stiff, non-textured, non lit character excluded from a background evoking the same emotions an artist can achieve with stylizing, colorizing, and personalizing everything within the scene.

Of course, I could be wrong but would really love to see catagories within each theme that people could submit to. Maybe someone doesn't have the time to pose his model, so he can just submit his entry in the modeling section. Maybe a 2d artist had an awesome design but hasn't mastered a 3d program, so he can submit his entry in the character design section. These are the things I'm thinking might help. They're just suggestions.

Keep the challenges coming!

And who will manange this? :) it's much easier said than done, and the purpose of the challenge is not what you stated, what you stated belongs in the WIP or 3D artwork forum.. here we focus are specific areas one at a time to develop them. I for one have seen so many wonderous art in the last few months that you wouldn't see on a normal day... THIS IS WHAT WE'RE AFTER ;)

cheers
