hi there buddy! I see that u already found a great idea. What about making those two characters a bit rotated or something, so they arent painted straight from the profile. It would bring more dynamics and details to the image. Just a thought :) keep going and good luck!

I changed the story about the picture a bit...now the dragon is a "she" and she's flirting with the barbarian.

Ok i already got some advice from my friend and i'm considering crossing her legs and changing the swords direction on his back.

I fixed the sword and the legs and i also made her a liposuction :)

Nice picture so far - lots of fun! I like her pose, especially the arms and the newly-crossed legs. His right arm feels a little awkwats in that it just completely disappears behind his leg. Where'd it go? What's it doing? There's certainly room to have his hand draped over his leg, or to do something more expressive with it. His right foot is perfectly visible but it a bit awakward in proportions.

And personally, I thought that the sword worked better when it was oriented in the other direction. True, we can see more of it, but now it blocks the clear view of his mouth and cup - sure it's behind them, not in front of them, so it's not really "blocking" them, but it does make that important area harder to read and gives it a less clear silhouette.

Anyhow, hope you don't mind the crits. Lookign really nice so far - can't wait to see how far you take this. Good luck... Dragon scales are a pain to render! :)

Walrus...tnx for the crits and the reply...stuff like this really keeps me moving forward. As for the sword i will try to make it stand more upwards so it doesn't interfeer with the silhuete. Now that you mentioned his arm...it does look strange...i'll fix it.

Now...i'm thinking about making this picture even stranger and puting them in the middle of the desert with cactuses and stuff...and a princess to rescue in the back ofcourse :D

exellent progress buddy! I really love the way how the whole piece became tied together, working as a whole when u put the table between them. Also great job on first step of tone values, and I agree with walrus about the swords handle. Unfortunately it messes the part which is already very complex so it makes it complicated to read now. But as I said before, the sword itself helps the image to be more balanced, so if u ask me, just rotate it a bit more, so that the handle wont cross previous mentioned part. Donno about the desert idea, sounds really strange but not logic, which I think it should. But its ur call, Im sure either way u'll manage to work it right and make a great piece out of it.

You got mad skills... Colors look great, i also like that the pencil lineart is still visible....

walrus
08-26-2007, 04:08 PM
Looking good, Boris. The sword change makes it clearer to read. Have fun with the Wacom - it's a lot easier to use than a mouse for painting, and fun too! Your painting style so far reminds me of my good friend Sacha, "the1stAngel," who's also in this Challenge (although his entry is woefully stalled.) If you haven't seen his stuff, you should check it out, I think you'd like it!

One comment I'll make is that the face right now is not as strong an expression as it could be and it might be nice to see you push that further - maybe you can increase the frown, furrow and lower the brow more, really push the expression of distrust and wariness (if that's what he's feeling.) Good luck!

08-26-2007, 04:42 PM
Tnx to all for commenting.

Walrus...I agree about the expresion on the face and i must say I was going to do exactly what you said...distrust (he's thinking like: WTF??!!...but...hmm...maybe...she's kinda hot...but still WTFFF??!!), heh.

Oh and one last thing...the technique or better said the way of setting and organizing the layers and the way i start painting is actualy taken from your tutorial...:) I really like your work.

Tnx again to all for your support.

great drawing, I love your lineart, and the coloring is looking promising too!
Im thinking that maybe you could make her a bit less human, she's too much like a woman with dragon head IMHO, maybe you could make the arms more dragon-like... just a suggestion though, it looks very good as it is now...

Hello!

I like very much the original drawing with the "traditional looking" dragon, it reminds me of Draco the movie, only in a caricature style.

I agree with Fernando about the female dragon, it's too much like a woman with dragon head.

Hey man gotta say that's a great line :D and it looks so funny with your initial sketch too. I love your paint job so far, one thing I feel like is: the synopsis and the dragon in the first sketch fit so perfectly to each other, it creates a more comical theme to me; when the dragon looks more childish I mean. The seductive dragon may be a stranger theme at the same time, so i guess it's a decision btw the funnier and the stranger. Anyway, just some ideas, great work going on here, good luck with the challenge...

Hey everyone...tnx again for the support.

Okmer: Yup...after i posted the pic I also saw this glitch...earlier I had the sun on the other side of yhe pic but i mirrored it because of the composition...i agree and will fix either the shadows or most likely i'll shift the sun a bit to the center of the picture. Tnx for the comment.

Hey Borac! U r making great progress, really love everything u put down... especially the teddy hanging down the sword :) If I must say a word or two to crit anything, that would be the light and shadow on the missdragon' front side. The line of the shadow as it goes now is a bit "boring". Coz I dont know how to explain what I have in my mind right now, give me a nudge tomorrow at work :) Keep posting and cant wait to see the final product!

Excellent brushwork! Its so clean and tight. That last one looks almost like your final image. as for crit, everything looks great - colors, composition and mood - but the sun at the top of the piece is sort of a distraction for me. It takes away a little from the central characters.... just a suggestion

Great stuff - I really like how this is turning out. My only crit would be to avoid two tangents. First with the cactus on the left and the edge of the rock - have the cactus a bit higher to break the line. Second is the tip of the Dragon's tail. Great work!

The Barbarian came to rescue the princess but the dragon had other plans. She had a crush on him since the day she first saw him beheading her older sister. Bored of all the usual women the barbarian decided to give it a shot.

Photoshop & Wacom.

A strange situation, and choice for the barbarian. Also a strange event for the dragon to fall in love with him in the first place... You've done a really good job with your naive painting style, and delicious warm colors of it. Love the cast shadows of the needles on the cactus plants, a very suble detail that adds incredibly to the quality. Best of luck with the voting...
