Hi team,

will post all the progress on the concept stuff as we go.
Here's the first super quick sketch i did for Jen and John.

Great character concepts Craig! I like em really!
Btw are you going to model em or you will animate them right in 2D?
Your workflow is good n speedy sofar, it would be great if you introduce abit about ur team n story also!
all the way I'll keep an eye here to see ur future steps and wish you best lucks,

Hey Mim... Yeah, Craig is doing some great work for us! I'm the team director, handling a lot of the writing for the script and what not. We have a small team of modelers and animators that'll turn these characters into 3D!

I'll post some stuff about our team in a bit, thanks for the interest.

hey everyone,

here's the layout for our establishing shot. Moody, dark, steamy. We'll make it expose the environment better of course, I hope you have your monitors calibrated :D

Thanks for the comments folks.

Nice environment, Raine. Very moody.

Here's the progress on Jen, based on your previous comments Dmitri.
First version shows the mechanism on the arm as larger. We pulled this back with the final version.

my main concern however is that Jen and John do not sit stylistically together. I think some of the alterations we have made have made her a little less stylised. Any thoughts on this people?

Good luck guys! :bounce:

incredible concept art.
redfrog- it seems that int eh first sketches both characters had kind of an inverted v look making for a heroic forced persoective, based on the big boots.
the heads and hands are working together for me. butit does seem that you have kept the big boot look for him and lost it for her, probably for the sake of making her "prettier".
From design one to two, she gained a big arm and lost big boots. In 2 to 2.1 the big arm gets toned down. so she is a little "normal" compared to him now.
i woulod say go with the big boot look for both of tehm so they have the same forced perspective quasi-heroic look.

on the other hand, i find large footed characters hard to animate, or at least requiring a certain stylisation on the movemnt to accomadate the funky footware.

can't wait to see more.

redfrog
07-25-2007, 10:42 AM
Ok folks,

I've modified Jen based on some of the suggestions. The old bulky boots ar back, and the face has been reworked to find a happy medium between the first and second versions. I've included a combined pic with Jen and john so we can have a look at how the two work as a pair. Comments and crits are most welcome.

Just thought i'd also take this opportunity of welcoming Brad Virgo to the team (aka XxMushr00mheadXx) who has come on board to help out with the creature design concept art. Brad is a very talented illustrator who i work with in the toy industry.

With the two of us on concepts for the creatures we should start churning through this stuff a lot quicker.

Hey let me know if you guys need help with modelling. I just completed a 3d character which is in the same style as the ones here. I even wonder if it was designed by the same artist, because the style is so close. :)

I'd like to post a picture of the character. I've also got an animation to test the mesh movement, of the BIG FEET style. If someone can host it let me know. My site is not working right. Its only 100kb and the pic is 40kb.

Hi folks,

Here is Danb's model that he has mentioned in previous posts. I think its in a very similar style to what we're trying to achieve here with our stuff. His animation of it is fantastic. I was unable to host the video file but for team members i have placed the file in the file sharing section of the team website. Defintely check it out.

Craig-- I don't have much to say about that... I think he works perfectly. What reservations did you have about him? I could only imagine adding few more steampipes here and there, but that's about it.

Here's a rough layout of the gallery... Raine is currently working on doing some more renderings of the wing and entrancewa- I think he'll post them soon... So far the atmosphere he's creating is great.

hey again guys!

I think the key to modelling is simplification - I liked what Danb had done for example. But I'm not a modeller so maybe I won't talk about it more :D

Anyways, here's bit of an interior lighting test. The hallway looking to the entrance. I'll do additional design renders of the pillars and stuff to help modellers - I just thought it wasn't smart to try to crack all the designs and mood and lighting all in the same image..

Here's the next creature concept. This is the mechanical female creature they view on the pedestal. Here's a few design notes:

1. Because she is a statue as opposed to the tekhead design which exists in the painting, i have made her complately mechanical. No organics.

2. Deliberate aesthetic choice to have no discernible face. I think it makes the character more menacing and unreadeable in its expression.

Also if Dmitri has me animate, i was going to use motion builder. Could you animators tell me which program you will be using to animate? I'm just wondering if me animating in motion builder will be compatible, or if i should use something else.

Thanks.

awesome stuff again guys!

Mechanical woman looks great, giving one overlarge eye was a cool idea.

Anyway, here's some pillars that were designed.. they aren't shown in much detail, so the sketch for the ones in hallways is very loose.. just suggesting the general shape.

So pillar A was the first attempt, tried to make a pillar that would look like a crooked chimney. It was decided, however, that just a regular, round one would be better. Also this design took a lot of floor space. Therefore Pillar B replaced the design. Pillar C is meant to appear outside the main entrance of our gallery.

Wartoon and Mim - thanks for the postive comments on our teams stuff. Its really starting to come along.

Mandy and Greg - glad you like the designs - can't wait to see you folks bring them to life!

Raine - nice pillar designs dude. Like the lateral thinking on design A. Its cool and something distinct, but do agree it may take too much space. Nice job.

Danb - its only the legs of Tekhed but i'm already excited. Its looking good dude! Can't wait to see more.

Will have ortho views of John and Jen in the near future, and will then move on to the old man near the entrance.

Hey Guys... I'm just going to basically echo what Craig just mentioned. This all seems to be coming together beautifully.

Dan... We'll have to do a 'roundtable' with all of the animators to discuss our options for animation. We'll take this one step at a time... So for now that means on modeling all of this stuff up. The work on the legs is excellent; I'm excited to see the rest.

Raine... Got your earlier email. The Pillar designs look great. I'll send you a follow up email shortly.

Amanda+Greg... Just hold tight till we get everything in order. Once we have all the orthos ready, we can start divy-ing up the work. Glad to know you're excited!

Thanks to everyone else for your positive comments!

Nice work dan looks really good. Fantastic work, and quick too.

I noticed you didn't include the protruding spine though? The back looks a little plain without it.

redfrog
08-09-2007, 02:29 AM
Yeah my only comments, would be that on the head - the shoulder sockets are very small and being so small they leave a lot of flat area that makes the head seem more egg shaped - don't get me wrong - the actually head shape is perfect. Its just these large exposed areas that create the illusion if the head being much fatter.

I also agree with greg on the spine, and also the plug point where the tube fits in to the back of the head is low on detail. My assumption for this tho is that we won't really see the back of character and perhaps these details won't get seen.

Fantastic job tho, Dan!

danb
08-09-2007, 02:01 PM
All excellent points guys. I'll fix them today.

I totally forgot to model the protruding spine. That wasn't on purpose, i just forgot. :)

And i'll add detail to the plug, definately.

So do you guys think i should pull the shoulders forward to fill in some of that space? Would the head need to be pulled forward along with the shoulders?

Thanks guys.

danb
08-09-2007, 09:24 PM
I put in the spine and details for the brainstem area. I forgot to look at the back illustration before. That's why they weren't in there. Oops.

Here's the link. Same link as before but different movie... http://www.djdimitrious.com/sbteam/fileupload/files.php?op=download&id=tekhead1.mov .

I think i still need to make some details more pronounced. Like some of the bevels on the helmet and elsewhere. I think i need to tweak the forearm where the hand meets the forearm on the left arm. I think it should be a little smoother.

I did not put all the screws and bolts in because polygon count is getting pretty enourmous now. I figured all the extra bolts would push this too high for little effect. I'd put them in if this was for an illustration competition, but for animating we gotta keep the polygons lower.

What do you guys think? More corrections?

I've also got a lot of Jen's noggin' (head) modelled. I'll post a pic of her in a little while.

GregOconn
08-09-2007, 09:52 PM
Yeah nice one Dan that's a huge improvement.

redfrog
08-09-2007, 11:10 PM
That's gret Dan.
With the front of the head - maybe we leave it. Can definitely see you point and agree the polygon count must be huge with that amount of detail. It may be something that isn't noticeable anyway one the model is tecxtured up anyway.

Just a note - if you wanted to cut back a little of the detail i the cog on the chest was originally meant to just be a marking (kinda like a tattoo). Dunno if this will reduce much - just a thought anyway.

The model looks great man - awesome work.

Greg - i should have the steam maiden orth done tonite. Sorry its taken so long. Work has been madness lately and the hours have been long. Sorry man. Should get it done tonite tho.

Awesome orthographics again craig!!!

Whoever is modelling this might want to contact me. There are a lot of similar elements between the steam maiden and the tekhead. I could give you the file and you could copy and paste the elements into your own scene. If that's legal? Don't know what the rules are for that sort of thing.

I am using maxon cinema 4d r10 to model. I can export to .3ds , .obj, .fbx and .lwo. I am using a subdivision modifier. The objects exported would be low polygon, so in your 3d program you would have to apply a subdivision modifier to smooth the polys to look like the ones in the wireframe pics above.

Thanks Dan!

I think the reason the image links aren't working may have something to do with the user name and password request that comes up when you click the link. Not sure...Dmitri may be able to explain that one.

fido972 - thanks for the kind comments on our teams stuff. Itscoming together great!

Fido - Thank you for the kind words.

Dan - Excellent work...The TekHed came out amazing. Greg O'Connor will be modeling the steam maiden, so collaborate with him as much as possible. This is a team effort so any file sharing is 100% encouraged.

Amanda - I got your e-mail, but thanks for letting everyone else know you'll be out for a week. Keep an eye open, we should be tossing some work your way once Brad finishes some revisions on the Cat and posts the Dragon.

Regarding the file sharing site - Instead of just copying and pasting the download link, it has to be formatted like this:

http://www.djdimitrious.com/sbteam/fileupload/files/*name of file you uploaded*.jpg

It provides a direct link to the actual file without having to address any part of the uploading/downloading mechanism.

Cheers,
Dimitri.

Here is my progress for Jen so far, 3 hours into it. Hair is going to be a nightmare to model. :) Oh well i'll get it right eventually. Could use some tips on how to make the hair, if anyone has them.

Hey dan, you got the link right, you just needed to add spaces where the +'s are. I normally just use _'s for spaces, cause they can be included in the link easier.

Anyway, lookin' good so far. Her expression makes me laugh. Will wait to see more before I'll give any comments :)

Yeah i use to go to Warwick RI every monday and thursday to play hockey. Not anymore. What company do you work for in Quincy? I work for HyperActive Inc. The are a small multimedia company with emphasis on 3d.

For hair, I usually keep it one piece. You can still create the look of multiple pieces by keeping it one piece.

I usually duplicate the faces of the top of the head (extrude it) and then extrude parts out of it. And then tweak it. (The underneath of the hair is something you don't worry bout as much other than the parts that are visable) For the top part. I usually pull edges up, so you can see hair seperation.

Dan - Damn Jenny got back. Might just be me but Jen looks a bit too bulky in the waist or slender in the torso...Craig? Great model though, and I like where you are going with the hair at the moment, I think you've nailed it - the wisps over her eyes at the moment make great shapes too.

Greg - Steam maiden process is looking very promising. Can't wait for some more progress pics.

Quick update from me. I've done a rough turnaround for metal kitty. Hope to have a nice clean Illustrator version for you all tomorrow night.

Just a thought, but I was wondering if I could help out the person who's modelling the cat by modelling up some of the gears in it's inner body? I've got Solidworks, which is great for making technical elements, (but tricky to make organic shapes) and would be ideal for making gears. I'm not sure how easy it is for you guys to make this stuff in the programs you use? However this would all depend on time lines and how long it takes me to finish the rest of the concept work. Maybe we can suss it out when we get around to it....

Yeah i was thinking the same thing, her waist is a little big. I am sticking to the orthos though. Think her waist will have to be adjusted anyways.

You know you bring up a good point about the gears. If we want any of the gears to be moving then we need to address that early on in the modelling process. That way we can make sure each gear, screw, etc. is modelled as a seperate part. On some of my models screws and gears are actually modelled from surfaces of underlying parts and the gears, screws, etc do not have backfaces and if moved would effect the surface underneath them a lot.

Actually the characters i have modelled are not that bad, but if the steam maiden needs these things Greg will need to know.

What do you guys think?

redfrog
08-14-2007, 12:30 AM
Hey guys,

Just a few comments as i have just had a chance to have a look at Jen.
I think the problem you guys are talking about with the waist is not actually being created in the front view so much as the side profile.
I wil explain this better later in a drawing but for now the only way i can explain it is she is too "square" in the torso.
The furthest outline on the torso should sit directly in the middle of the side profile whereas at the moment it sits to far to the front creating the blocky effect in the body.
Probably doesn't make sense as words at moment so i will send through a drawing explaining it better a bit later.
Also there are a few things with the face as well that i'll make comments on.
Overall tho Dan the model is coming along nicely - boots look great and i like where you're going with the hair.

Hey Dan,

Here is a visual to explain my thoughts on the body of the jen model.
Also i think at the moment the checkbones are too pronounced (creating those crease lines down the sides of the mouth) and the eye sockets too sunken - making her face too masculine. A geneneral softening of the features may help. Also i think the chin is a little too flat and broad.
Just thoughts anyway. Hope this helps.

Raine - Beautiful scenes...The imagery is very atmospheric and will blend in well with our theme. The kitty thing should be at least twice as large if not larger though... supposed to dwarf the characters. Don't worry about a redraw though-- we'll work that out when modeling it.

Anyways, here's a sketch of the gallery corridor. I saw those kind of lights used in some restaurant I think, and they looked quite nice to me so I brought them here. Otherwise the place is just rows of pillars with exciting lighting I guess. The roof is close because there's second level above this one and it all has to fit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Sir_Ranath/east-wing-corridor-.jpg

You guys remember the area in the middle of the east wing? The one with The Posing Female? I thought it would be a nice to have a kind of an opening in the second level, so that you could see down to first. That would be a nice chance to get a bird's eye shot into the gallery too.. Lookin' good Dan. I think it works for me... Let Craig chime in and see what he thinks. Edit: I did notice one thing, the gear on her back is more of a tattoo I think, or something slightly raised off the skin, but it definitely needs to be moved back into the model a bit.

I agree, the sooner the better. I think we're slightly off schedule, but I don't want to rush the modeling.

How long would you estimate it would take to start and finish texturing everything? The major things that haven't been started modeling wise are:
1) John
2) The Dragon
3) The Environment

I would hope to get those nailed down in the next 2 weeks, which means you finishing John this week, Amanda finishing the cat this week (and working on the Dragon as soon as Brad is done with the sketch) and maybe a collaborative effort to come up with a decent design for the gallery space (I think Raine has done a significant job already, but it'll still need to get modeled at some point...)

Okay, nice to know. Do your whole multitasking thing up and we'll wait for the results! If you're stuck, feel free to post any part here... I'm sure we could help out. (PS. I think the overhead lighting bar things look really good in the gallery... Your latest sketch seems to work well with the scale of the pillars too.)

Not exactly sure! I'm trying to distribute the work evenly here, but I think it would be best if we left texturing all of them to one person, rigging them to one person, and then heap all the animation on one person. Can't be certain that's how it'll work.. but there will definitely be some discussion about it in the near future (anyone else feel free to chime in...please do!)

Anyways... Good work with the kitty so far... fine with the tail.

Best,
Dimitri.

danb
08-24-2007, 04:16 AM
I agree dmitri. I think that the rigging will depend entirely on the animating. Different 3d programs have specific structures of bone hierarchy and rigging requirements.

I think we need to lay out who's going to animate what and go from there. If there are animators that are going to use certain program the rigging needs to be specific to that program.

I can rig, setup facial morphs, and animate in Maya, 3d studio max, Cinema 4d, and Motion Builder (animate body only, no facial morphs). My prefered workflow is animate body movements in motion builder, export that as .fbx to c4d and add the facial animation in c4d. But i am open to any program.

If some of the other aniamtors are around please chime in with your prefered animation program. Thanks. This will help to decide which way to go with rigging. How many animators do we have?

On a side note i can help with anyone's rigging if they need the help. After i get my modelling done. :)

Do we have storyboards of the different scens? Or do we take them from the script?

Agreed. We'll see what page everyone is on over the next couple days, and have Greg and Mandy fill everyone in on what their normal workflow is. We can work from there.

If some of the other aniamtors are around please chime in with your prefered animation program. Thanks. This will help to decide which way to go with rigging. How many animators do we have?
All 3 of you guys have expressed interest in animation... Dan, Greg, and Mandy... There's a fourth, Jason (User Octopus7) who might help us with modeling in the near future, and I would love to snare another animator to help us...

Do we have storyboards of the different scens? Or do we take them from the script?
Well, both. Believe it or not, the script is still being worked on. I'm trying to keep it minimal, while emphasizing the juxtaposition of the various elements and trying to bring out some of the subtle and humorous "strange behavior." Go figure, eh?

I expect to have a final copy soon enough. I would like to get a page or two of storyboards and work on some of the camera work with everyone, but I'm not sure who can do the storyboards once the script is 100% done... Craig, maybe? I'm not sure that's his thing, and he's already done so much for the team already... Any thoughts Craig?

One step at a time,
Dimitri

On a side note, who has to upload stuff through the uploader so it shows up on the team-entry list? I think it would be a nice time to thumbnailing our work and showing it around.

I do animate but nothing at this scale. I'm still getting my BA in animation, so if other people feel more qualified they can go ahead.

However, I've been practicing my texturing all summer. I've definately gotten a good process going. I tend to pelt map the UV's and then color them in Zbrush.

Put me more on the texturing side than animation side, or I can continue modeling after the dragon.

Thanks,
Mandy

Cat with see thru body is on the team site. Sorry forgot to upload it last night.

Dan - Jen's face is 1000% percent better. It's looking really good!

Mandy - Cat looks like it's coming along nicely.

With the storyboards, what happened to this dude - Miles Morse: Storyboard Artist and Cinematography - on the team page? Has he dropped out?

R-K
08-24-2007, 11:07 AM
about modelling the environment - if you run out of time, start dropping out details. And most importantly don't stress about that: the main focus should be on the characters. If they work, the whole thing will work.. and the enviro is all about lighting I guess and you don't see too much anyways.

I could help with the storyboards as well. Since we're doing modelling at the same time as doing our storyboards, we could consider making a 3d previz? I don't know how much work it would take but it definitely would help in messing around with camera moves..

And Dmitri, as a team leader you have to upload all our stuff

No, I still haven't done any displacement maps yet. I'm taking a class in the fall on zbrush. So far, displacements are too complex and unnecessary for what i'll be needing on my senior project so I haven't gotten into it yet. Once I learn it tho , I should be able to help.

Cool, good luck with the class. I think out of all the programs i know zbrush is one of the most difficult to learn. Anyways that's a topic for another thread. :)

Ok here's the problem:

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v715/acarls20/?action=view&current=ickcat.jpg

I make these shapes and they have proper geometry, untill I cut out the whole. I'm afraid that if I keep having everything with proper geometry the CAT will be super high poly. And will be very difficult to animate. So then I leave it with this icky geometry in the whole areas and it makes some icky edges.. Notice the image...

Any advice?

How are you cutting out the holes? Best way to do it is to not use booleans, but to delete or cut a hole in the polygons.

Can you show a pic with the wireframe rendered please?

animationhohogrl

So that area I did use booleans. I checked and the other area where I cut out definately does look a lot better. I might redo these pieces that I did with booleans...

Another way you could do it, since those booleans don't look too bad, is to stich the points together so that there are no triangles. This way you won't have to start over on those parts.

Dan, nice work. Could you do a medium-res static render of it? Would like to put it on our gallery page and eventually submit it to the cg-uploader thing.

By the way, if nobody has noticed, I've updated our team webpage with most of the art so far.

Craig... Well, i'll let you know. Miles is no longer with the team; it seems like he didn't have any time to devote to the project, unfortunately. I've handed the script off to my brother (a writer) to see what he can do with it. That'll take a little time, so you'll have some time to clear your plate... hope you feel better too!

I might be finished tomorrow. I'm getting real close BUT, I have a question.

As i'm modeling these gears, some of my models (of gears) don't match up perfect (in case of animation). I'm wondering if they will be animated in the first place? First of all, with animating it I have some concerns. A) time consuming B)not entirely noticeable unless your doing a close up.

So technically my question is how concerned should i be with making the gears functional?

Funny you link to A Gentleman's Duel... it's a great little animation. Do you mean the style of his face or overall film? In terms of John's face, I think his lips need to be a bit more pronounced, and cheekbones slightly more chiseled, so-to speak... We'll see what Craig has to say.

Yeah i was thinking that John's face might look good chiseled like the guy in that picture. Not exactly the same, but along those lines.

I don't think that the overall look would match the one in Gentelman's Duel, because we are going for more a dark, sinister, feel. Sort of like a post apocalyptic 1800's look. Like we skipped from the 1800's right into the cyborg nuclear age. :)

I'll make the corrections to the face.

I am using Maxon's Cinema 4d r10. Its got AWESOME polygon subdivision modelling tools. Why do you ask?

What program are you using to model?

BTW the kat came out awesome. Can't fully appreciate the complexity of the model until one sees it in 360. Way to go. :)

Theres still some issues I gotta fix on the cat really minor ones but it is pretty much good to go you tell me you need it and i'll fix it real fast..

Also, I was just curious about what you were modeling with cause your details are flawless but that could just because your a super amazing modeler.

I'm using Maya 7.0 ...

danb

Yeah i was thinking that the inside of the head could use some details. Maybe another gear or two in there to fill up the space. But you should probably wait till you hear from Craig, he's the man. :)

Thanks for the compliments. I started 3d with Max and switched to Maya, but neither had the workflow i was after. Plus even though Maya is a powerhouse program, its subdivision polygon modelling tools are lacking a lot. Maya's nurbs tools are top notch though. Maya always used nurbs in big blockbuster movies, so the polygon tools never got updated.

The great thing about c4d is that you can model in what's called a Hypernurbs. This generates a high poly cage while editing a low poly object. The reason this is good for polygon modelling is because it kind of lets you see into the future. You can acurately judge where cuts, loops, etc. need to go in order to create the final model.

Its really a great set of tools. Especially the "Tweak" mode, which allows you to move your cursor over a point, polygon or edge and select it just by clicking it. Tweak lets you automatically select a point polygon or edge without having to go into any menus. Also c4d has a right click menu similar to Maya.

You should give the demo a test run. A lot of my freinds and the studio i am currently working for use both C4d and Maya together, because c4d has the polygon tools and fast renderer and Maya has the animation strengths. The learning curve on c4d is extremely easy. I can't say enough about this program. If you decide to try the demo and have questions, let me know and i'll help you out. I do a lot of teaching of c4d also.

I'm almost done with John, just have to finish his hair. Then i'll be ready to move onto the next model which is...... :)

Jee Dan, you even convinced me to download the demo :)

I apologize for my silence the past few days... The kitten is great, Amanda. (I agree with Dan about filling out the head a little with Gears though.) You cranked it out pretty fast too, I'm amazed! John seems to be flushing out equally as well, we'll have all the models ready in no time at all.

I touched base with Greg a few days ago. He informs me that the steam maiden is approximately 95% done and will be posting screenshots at the first chance he gets. Luck has it, he'll be spending two weeks in France meeting with a client for a project. Hopefully he'll be able to hit the ground running when he returns.

My brother is pecking away at adding some interesting detail into the script, as well as tuning the dialog. Myself, I'm mulling around with some musical thematic things I would like to accomplish with the film.

Dan... I think your next assignment will be the gallery itself. I think it'll be straightforward enough, and it'll give Raine a chance to step-up and provide some interesting commentary of his own about the space. We'll discuss it a bit more when you're fully done with John.

As for Amanda, I haven't gotten an update from Brad about the Dragon, so we'll see. Hopefully the sketch can be wrapped up in a few days so you can begin modeling.

After that the Dragon and the gallery space, we'll be diving headfirst into texturing, facial-morphs, and animation (Arguably the more fun part?)

Cheers,
Dimitri.

Also the holes in the belts on the arms and feet need to be applied with materials instead of modelling, because the mesh will get disasterous if i use booleans. Should be easy with materials anyways.

Do you all need to see a movie?

What should i start on next Dmitri?

I think we still need the old man, and the dragon modelled and the environments made, right?

Outside pillars should be similar size varants of:

After I/we see some shots of what you have, some wall alterations/deorations could be made. There should be a small baseboard along the edge of the walls. No windows, but night-time skylights should be on the vaulted ceiling.

Also, did you get my latest email with those previs shots?

Do you think you could make a short list of things needed to be completed? This way he can look through the list to see what he can help out with and to see if he'll have enough time to contribute. Maybe with art examples of things? I'd do it myself but i don't know exactly what needs to be finished. I think we need the hallway, the dragon, and the old man, right?

Time left: 43 days, 11 hours, 37 minutes, 21 seconds.

Here's an update on the current team situation:

Amanda is needing to concenrate on her schoolwork this semester, so she'll be resigning her post as a modeler/animator for the duration of the project. Her spot will be filled by a friend of Dans, Mike Batchelor.

Mike will be joining us as the environment modeler for now, and Dan assume the responsibility of modeling the old man and dragon.

Craig - Here (http://www.djdimitrious.com/ShotList.pdf) is the list of shots for the storyboard. Be as creative as you like; I've left out a few of the facial expressions and poses for you to fill in however you feel would fit... Should give you a bit of mobility. Let me know, or anyone for that matter, if anything warrants a change here. Up in the next few days is the dialogue script.

By the way guys, I found this (http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2007/08/26/the_age_of_steampunk/)the other day. It's a nice writeup of the whole steampunk genre/movement. An interersting read if nothing else. I'm also read a blog entitled Brass Goggles (http://www.brassgoggles.co.uk/brassgoggles/) from time to time. Our visuals lean heavily toward the fantasy steampunk genre, something that the blog addresses now and again; pretty wild stuff.

Cheers,
Dimitri.

hi all,

I promised a preview of our establishing shot. Here it is. This is the resolution it will appear in the final. Trying to do it with just painting, thought it might give it illustrative look that would fit with our overall style (slightly cartoonish). I'll have to add some things, for example the entrance to the dome (right now there's just 2 lights approximating the point where it's gonna be). Some cleaning to do, textures to be added, overall adjusting to be done. I think exposures and colors work pretty nice.

Yep, the subtle zoom effect gives mattes a slight 3D appearance; enough to use it as it's own shot. It's why mattes are so versatile!

Do we have any more detailed drawings of the halls/galleries etc.?

My friend is having trouble figuring out the details of the environments. Based on what he is reading of the script kind of contradicts the concept illustrations. He could use some help from more detailed explainations or drawings.

R-K

if the layout is hard to understand, perhaps he should take a look at the floor plan and use that as the basic guide. Concepts are focusing on lighting quite a bit and details might be hard to pick up. So I would use the floor plan as a guide and improvise details (what you don't see in camera is not really worth doing anyway, not too much time left) or then tell specifically what needs attention and I'll try to whip up something that would explain that area/detail. Quite admittably there's a whole lot of things that have not been designed, such as doors, floor textures, wall details, 360 degree dome, parts of the gallery.. so if any of those needs to be drawn, tell me quick and I'll get it done.

I think what Mike is getting confused about in the script is how our version starts slightly earlier than the "official" script. Have him download the shot list I posted above and he'll get the complete picture. Essentially our adaption of the screenplay provides a bit of background before they step into the gallery situation.

Raine, as he just posted, could definitely help more with the environment than I could. The treatment from our team site does provide the reader a "feel" for the space, so Mike should definitely read that. The environment should have a slight illustrative feel to it, as all the other art we've produced does as well. Part of the feel of the space is just the sheer size of it though. The hall/dome area is supposed to have a fairly 'vast' appearance to it.

Raine definitely has the feel of it down, so I think if Mike needs any specific details, Raine should draw up some basic wire-frame-esque drawings to help him out.

Let me know...

Dimitri

Awesome storyboards Craig.

Craig in the concept work the characters look like they have a lot of brown on them. Would it be ok to make some of the brown a copper, silver or gold color, probably the metal elements?

Dmitri i started shading John last night and giving him some color. No texturing but i think i have a way to make the shaders look old and steampunkish without it taking too much time.

After that i was thinking of probably working on either the cat or the steam maiden, just in case we don't get them from Amanda and whoever made the steam maiden. What do you think?

If not those i'll keep shading the characters i have already. After that i'll move on to rigging.

Oh and there is a method in cinema 4d called "camera mapping". What it does is map a matte painting over simple geometry so the matte looks as if it were modelled in 3d. This allows for more extravagant pans and zooms. I was going to test this out with one of the mattes that i have. It may not work well with all the detail but if it does it will look great. Cinema 4d is great at camera mapping. Its one of its strengths and is used a lot in movies for this.

Amanda will give you the cat, we just need to email her. I'll do that today. I'll also get in touch with Greg to see if we can get the Maiden from him. Keep on texturing for now.

In addition to the texturing and shading of the characters... I think a fair amount of "extravagance" can be added as a post-process effect to the video (eg. Sepia toned, etc)... So don't worry about it so much.

In regards to Craig's storyboards- They are just sketches... That he shaded them at all is a plus in itself I think, so it doesn't really matter what color they are :)

Did you have a pallette in mind? Is that something you can create?

not really, I was mainly thinking of some kind of sepia-brass-look I see used a lot in steampunk theme. I don't know exactly how the grading could be done, I guess there's some kind of tools in After Effects and probably FinalCut as well. I could check that out at school tomorrow, I'm sure basic changes are not difficult. But to do that, you need the whole film ready and done, so you can start grading it (bad news for post production, deadline just moved closer by a couple of days :D )

Anyways, I just looked into the fantasy landscape with that dragon. It has several different descriptions to it, I guess I just go with sort of rugged looking half burned plains which seem to appear a lot. But the more I look into the shot list, the more complex this whole scene appears to be. I'll list some thoughts:

Shots 51-54:
if we see first the painting with the dragon, we probably see it from different angle than what we see in establishing shot of that environment. This isn't much of a problem, just use the same sky in the background, change to simple foreground where the dragon and girl can sit

Shot 55:
The main painting of the shot, from above, basic establishing shot.

Shot 56:
I guess we can either use the same matte as in 51-54 or switch to 3d environment?

Shot 57:
This sounds like a 3d shot to me. It could be achieved by either projecting matte on 3d or just doing it in 3d.. which would be easier for you?

Shot 58: Depending on the camera move, this could be anything from simple sky to massive 3d-sequence.

Shot 59: What angle do we see the scene from in here? From the same as in shot 58?

Shots 61: Depending on how much camera move we want, this could be basically a static matte or more complex 3d environment.

yeah.. that's it for now.

Craig: Yeah after i posted i had second thoughts, on making things dirtier. It may take a lot of work. I'd first like to get them all textured, rigged, and animated. Then if there is time i'll come back and make them dirtier. Now that i see Mike's work i think it might be good to keep them all nice and shiny because the mood is so dark; dirty textures may get lost in the lighting.

Ranaath: I understand better now. I think the sepia tone will be a nice touch. Mike is a motion graphics artist who uses c4d and after effects a lot also. So he can probably help out with that if needed.

So how soon do you guys think i can start animating?

I rigged John tonight to see what it would look like in motion. Looks pretty good. I have dynamic hair on all the characters. So far i haven't figured out how to incorporate the dynamic hair onto the imported animation, but i'm sure i'll figure it out. If not i'll just go with static hair or hair driven by bones for dynamic motion. I'll post tomorrow the results.

In the text it mentions theres a rope and cloth barrior between the people and the paintings do you guy's think i should add them aswell or will it all get to clutterd?

I defently agree on the colour grade iv got some relly nice after effects presets for that, can have a play arround with them, whos doing the comping?

Thought id post this link for you guys to check out some mattes using the camera projection that Dan was talking about in cinema.

You know, I wouldn’t worry about dirtying them up. Though Raine is right when he says they’ll probably have been walking through a dirty city, the lighting and gallery atmosphere will obscure a lot of those fine details in the image.

The only thing I could see changing with John at this point is to make his shirt tone a lot darker. Overall, the color palate is working for me.

I was mainly thinking of some kind of sepia-brass-look I see used a lot in Steampunk themes. I don't know exactly how the grading could be done. I guess there's some kind of tools in After Effects and probably FinalCut as well.
Color grading is a good idea; it’s something I’ve had on my mind for a while. It’ll depend on the lighting situation in the final comp. I have After Effects and a plugin called Magic Bullet which gives any sort of video an absolutely beautiful film effect, in addition to doing some of the best color grading I’ve seen. The only cost of doing this is time.

Well, being a CG competition and all, you’re right about it being complex. If we had more time, I wouldn’t mind going all out on a massive 3D environment for this, but… we don’t. What we’ll do is use a lot of selective camera work to make it seem much more complex than it is—oldest trick in the book. Based on your questions and input of shots 50-61, I’ll re-evaluate to come up with a clearer picture of exactly what needs to be accomplished.

So how soon do you guys think I can start animating?
This depends on how soon you think everything can come together. I’m a bit worried that Amanda hasn’t responded to my email about getting the cat, nor Greg for the steam maiden. We’ll see about that in the next day or so. As far as timeline goes, as soon as Mike does the entrance/first hall/dome environment, we could start banging out some shots, you think?

In the text it mentions there’s a rope and cloth barrier between the people and the paintings do you guy's think I should add them as well or will it all get too cluttered?
That was for a slightly different, preliminary version of the gallery I had in mind. I wouldn’t worry about it. It will, as you say, clutter things up.

I definitely agree on the colour grade iv got some really nice after effects presets for that, can have a play with them. Who’s doing the comping?
Feel free to step up to the plate, hehe. Like I said above, I’ve done a bit of video work and have a really nice film effect plugin that we can use. We can figure that out in a bit.

Thought I’d post this link for you guys to check out some mattes using the camera projection that Dan was talking about in cinema.
Looks fantastic. Once I come up with a clearer vision of the fantasy environment series of shots, we can get Raine to do a nice matte for it and you can have a go at doing some camera projection wizardry. We’ll see if it can work for the first matte as well. Do you think it will?

John model looks great man! Happy for you to do what you feel is best. The interior is also looking fantastic! Welcome aboard Mike!
Great work on the first set of storyboards, by the way. If you happen to see Brad today, get on his case about the Dragon orthos.

Cheers everyone,
Dimitri.

I'd rather see the entire environment done first. I wouldn't worry about it until then :)

Hey all,

I am not sure if you recognize me. Levente "Levi" is my name. I had a quick chat with Ranath who invited me to your team :D. And i thought why not, sounds kick ass.

So i am going to help you with 2d/3d mattes, maybe some environmental concepts i dont know. Anyways, glad to be on the team.

Cheers

My initial sketch on establishing shot over fantasyscape. Thinking about colors.. when I finished this I heard it should show more snow mountains and more reddish sky. I'll try that now..

Ok i have rigged John and he is ready to be animated. I have an example example i will post later. Tekhead is also rigged, but not shaded. I will shade tekhead tomorrow. I will get Jen rigged and shaded today also, i hope. :)

I think if we don't get the steam maiden and the cat from the artists by wednesday, i should start modelling them from scratch. We can't wait too long with them. It takes me about a half a week to model a character. So by that time frame i could have both modelled by the end of next week. Then another half week to a week for the dragon.

I'm going to need at the very least, two weeks to animate everything. and about one week to rig and texture the dragon, steam maiden and cat.

So i think this will allow for time for the last week to render and comp it all together. All together this only gives us 4 or 5 weeks to finish up everything. Did i count that right? :)

To this day, we have 36 days to render and do the final comp. I really hope we can get the files from the other artists because that will speed things up significantly. Any more friends you can pull some favors from? :) Schedule looks good to me, though.

I've got a couple more c4d people i know. They work more on the rigging side of things. But even if we could swap jobs then it would still help. I could go onto the modelling and they could take over in rigging.

I'll email them tonight and let you know.

now with red sky, no snow. It seemed to melt in the red so I basically got rid of it. Let's do a ton of concepts so we have something to pull from when we deal with the whole sequence, right?

Wow those are excellent guys. They should be easy to projection map to geometry. If we have time to do that. :)

Here's Jen shaded first attempt...http://www.cgfreelance.com/Jen%20draft%20final%202.jpg

Going to change the colors of the boots a little and maybe the right arm colors also.

Here's a link showing John using hair and a little cloth dynamics. I had to use cloth dynamics for him because his vest and belt area would not deform correctly... http://www.cgfreelance.com/John%20dynamics.avi

Oops, forgot to mention that Jen will have dynamic hair but not as detailed as John, because of a mistake in my setup of Jen. Will be using dynamic constraints instead (thanks mike). :)
