Right now we are looking for ways to speed up character animation. At the moment we do not need help with compositing.

Nice updates. The matte paiting seems to slightly clash with the dragon head (you can see some outlines near the horns.) Well you can rub em out in post they're visible in the final render.

ah yeah, I didn't bother cleaning the dragon up too well, after all that's just a still 2d painting that appears in a gallery. The whole idea of the painting is a huge cliche and super cheesy and was meant to emphasize John's ignorance of art and interest in just sex basically. So I thought making it the best painting in my life wasn't that good of an idea, I would have definitely improved a lot of things if it came to that. But thanks for notifying.. : )

Now that we have an extension i have time to make a naked 3d woman, similar to jen. Would you want me to do that? Could have it done in a few hours. I could pose her like in the pic and rendr both the dragon and woman just like you have them in the painting.

Don't worry about it. We need to focus all energy on animation.

nah, it's not really that important I guess. Of course the piece is now a stylistical mishmash and in that sense having both characters done in 3d would help. But then again, we see that painting for approximately 2 seconds in final film so not sure if it's worth it.

Ok if i find time to do it before dimitri sends me the final shot list, then i'll make a 3d girl. Will you have time to create another painting?

Do it! Post some wip on that!

Good luck!

In my storyboard girl even jumps off the painting... to the floor.

yeah I have, it's just compositing characters to a painting.. shouldn't take too long

Shot of naked amy, please hide her feet. :) ...

Also do you guys think i should change the color/texture of the dragon's wings? If so what should i change it to?

Hey Dan if you really want to change the texture of the dragon's wings i'd imagined them being a worn canvas like the sails of an old ship or this map...

That is an excellent texture. I'll use that.

hey guys, I know it's late in the game, but if you guys need another animator on board, I'd love to help.
I've only got experience animating in maya tho, and it looks like you guys are using motion builder? I'm not sure I'd have time to learn another program and animate around my job, but if maya and motionbuilder aren't too different then I could give it a go.

Well we'd love to have you... but yeah, we are doing most animation in motionbuilder. I'll wait for Dan (our lead animator) to chime in and give a rundown for you on MB vs Maya.

Cheers,
Dimitri.

Think dark olive semi transparent texture for wings could be fine. How much detail do you plan for the girl?

Hi matiax, unfortunately we do not need another animator. We have revized our script to allow for faster animation and because of this we do not need another animator.

Thanks for asking though. A week earlier and i would have said yes, but now we have enough time.

The texture for the dragons wings turned out great Dan.

Ranaath, is there supposed to be a matte for the background in the entrance scene where jen and john walk up the steps?

nobody ever mentioned that to me at least. Is there a need for one?

I'm not sure. Right now we only have a black backgound. It looks a little strange.

Anyway you could take a piece of the opening matte and make a camera matte but closer in on the gallery? I have tried taking the opening matte and using it as projection mapped to a background, but the image is not high res enough, to zoom in on the gallery.

Did that make sense? :)

Could you do that before friday?

Well it could be very fine when you attach pictures of scenes that you're writing about. Someone could see, think, learn or even comment that.

that's a nice idea, thanks, though I don't think there's a still of the shot Dan mentioned (the part of them walking stairs up).. at least I haven't seen one. This is an old shot which has a different camera angle and due to that doesn't really show what the problem is. But at least you get to see what scene we are talking about: http://www.c4dportal.com/slouchcorp/stuff/SBP/ENTRANCE_TEXTURES.jpg

yeah opening shot doesn't have the pixels. Sure, I could do that before friday, it's probably not too big deal. Be sure to give me some stills of the shot for me to work into.. i guess the background I do has to be projected to match the camera moves, right?

danb
11-07-2007, 03:30 AM
Ok yeah that shot works well. I'll work on getting that look instead of the camera mapping. It will be quicker.

Ranath
11-07-2007, 03:39 AM
umm, so what do you have right now? I thought the shot Mike finished some time ago is the one in need of a background element..?

though it's 5.38 am and haven't slept tonight so maybe it's just me being slow again..

danb

Yes it is, but rendertimes were way to long, so i had to optimize the scene and the result is not the same as in the pic above.

But i have an idea of how to fix it with a work around.

Ok so Its no problem, sorry for the confusion.

Playing around with that simple render you sent me, we could very easily cut out any sort of surrounding around the gallery. Just do a tight shot up the stairs. I'll talk to you tomorrow about it. We need to keep moving-- don't worry about it.

Dmitri - have updated as per your new shotlist.
You have condensed the first 30 shots in 10.
I'm sure you know what you're doing but the flow seems really dubious to me.
Obviously we need to shorten this piece but i think the current seems a liitle hard to follow.
Just my thoughts anyway.

Yeah, I understand your concern Craig. The 'official' screenplay actually begins when the enter the wing area, so anything before that just acts as exposition. That's why it's the part that got the most axing. In terms of camera action, it's going to be drawn out and so I'll see how much dialog we can include.

Anything particular in terms of lengthening that you would personally add to flush it out?

Dimitri.

love your team's work, especially because you introduced me to steampunk as a genre. having read the last two posts, in terms of visual flow, would it work better

S1 extreme long (where we are)
S4-S5 long shot crossing courtyard (where we are- more specific)
S3 medium long approaching the doors (who we care about)
S6 zooming into shot 2 (where who we care about is going)
Shot 7

?

just a thought, probably too late given the imminent extended deadline.

cheers

Thank you for the kind words.

Unfortunately the past week has been marred by 'work'... Our lead animator had to take a freelance job, putting our project at a complete standstill. The work of everyone in the short film category has been great so far, but it's a sad fact we won't be among those judged.

Regardless, like a few other teams, we will finish our work in due time at the benefit of creating a better animation.

Thanks our modelers,
Mike Batchelor, Greg O'Connor, and Amanda Carlson;

Matte artists,
Raine Kuus and Levi Szilárd Péterfi;

Animator (and modeler),
Daniel Bacchiocchi;

Concept Artists,
Craig Bruyn and Brad Virgo;

And voice actors,
Dianna Shaller, and Miles Morse;

for a job well done. Your work and dedication over the past few months has been nothing short of amazing. If you want to drop me a line, I'll happily email out a DVD copy the short film, but I'll also be hosting an HD version on the web. I'll be sure to let everyone know when it gets finished. At this point, it boils down to some final animation and rendering.

Cheers to all the other teams.

Regards,
Dimitri Diakopoulos

I just want to apologize to everyone on the team. I could not finish the animation because of an urgent job offer.

I have finished the job this past week and will pick up where i left off, with animation.

Again sorry. If that job didn't happen i really believe we could have placed in the top pick in our category.

Maybe we can submit it to a different contest when its finished.
