View Full Version : USB 2.0 HD Enclosure On USB 1.0/1.1?

I recently got a CoolMax HD enclosure that uses USB 2.0. On my main system that uses USB 2.0, it works fine. However, on my USB 1.0/1.1 systems, the system detects the device but does not display the partitions of the drive ... any ideas? Btw, the driver support on this hardware is basically null and void... -.-" There is this weird application that doesn't even install....
Does the drive details specify that its backwards compatible? Some aren't and I know Win9x won't see it if its formatted as NTFS.

yes, I'm quite aware of the NTFS issue. But all my systems run Win2K on NTFS. I've tried both. NTFS and FAT32 do not seem to work. My systems running USB 1.0/1.1 read the device but do not display them as available drives to write data to. However, my main workstation w/ the USB 2.0 will display them as logical drives just fine.
I think it winds down to the question of whether or not devices using USB 2.0 are backwards compatible with USB 1.0/1.1.
Try right clicking on "My Computer" and choosing "manage" then go to "Disk Management", you may have to "activate" the partition in there. If its not listed, then I would assume its a 1.1 compatability issue. Some stuff is backwards compatible, and some isn't. Check the specs for that Coolmax drive.

yeap, it's a compatibility issue. I got it working on my Dell file server with the USB 2.0 card but when i switched ports to the USB 1.1, no go.
