I think that you have to do Teddy more noticeable, couse when you cast a look at first - Teddy bear is invisible!

Very funny idea! I love the expression of his face... :D
Agree with the above comment about the teddy bear, a big girly fluffy one would maybe suit better.
Looking forward to seeing more!

Another small update - I made the teddy bigger with more saturation - I'll start working on detail and a more dramatic light source soon.

dinodog-jr

is this Leonides?

hopefully not..hehe..

Maybe u can make a fire besides him. To depicts the sparta is having a deep sleep in the forest. And that is how enemy approach to him silently. It will looks more atmosphere.

The Teddy bear can be change material from cotton to cloth to match that century. You know the puppet design from Korn cover.

Funny concept.hee.

SideAche
09-27-2007, 06:41 AM
Actually, the guys approaching are fellow Spartans - it's the moment that it is found out that he's a closet thumb sucker and teddy-bear hugger by his comrads. The lighting will be more dramatic - suggesting a fire just off screen. Good suggestion on the teddy. thanks

 Lifelike work with awesome idea! Just :applause: Only crit if i may: the background is too vertical composited. Mainly coz of those red skirt parts. Maybe a silly idea, but I thing a lightsource from the background should be cool. Like a warm candle light in a cooler shadowed foreground. A night scene or dawn. It could look like a surprising awakening of him. Just an idea.

Thanks Thermoside.
That is where I'm going with it - I haven't gotten to the BG yet. It will be cooled down on the off-light side. I may add a shield to one of the guys on the ends to break up the repitition. And you nailed the theme - he is waking up to discover his comrads are on to his closet thumb-sucking and teddy cuddling behavior. :) Thanks for the comfirmation.

This is priceless :D Lovely concept and great execution of expression. That's a great thought on the shield to break up the repetition I was thinking the same thing. Something to break that constant line moving to the right of the image. You could try and see if placing the shield to the far right in the warriors left arm at an angle in a way of cutting that side of the image to lead back to the focus. Intended in a way to act as a stopping point like the helmet does for the lower left.
Lovely piece Cliff  Happy painting!:bounce:

this is one of the funniest things i've seen in a while! it's also a remarkable painting. i love the slight tatteredness of the teddy. did Spartans have tatoos? it could drive your point even more. that might be overkill, but just a thought.

Hey Cliff, I think the hands made the piece come together much better. I've been looking at the piece for a while and I haven't seen any thing else that needs to tweeked or fixed. Maybe you could pull out a little more highlights in the helmet and armor, but I know your going for that rustic look. It looks really good and the hands turned out great. Good luck witht the rest of the compitition.

mb
10-13-2007, 11:35 AM
hi! thats strange.... on one side it could be funny on the other side its tragic. I'm not sure about the expression of the helmet... why is the expression not stronger like a warrior to create more contrast to the "inner world"? Maybe the teddy could be more damaged. Good work and good luck!

Hi Cliff.
Probably it's just me, but I'm sorry to differ from the "add hands" point of view. Granted the background figures read better with them, but somehow it looks to me like if his own fellows were menacing him in his sleep, and takes some fun out of the pic. It can be though that I got the concept wrong from the beginning, as I thought more of a tough warrior that is afraid of the dark, for example, if not with his teddy bear.

Maybe a different attitude for them hands, no swords but some gesturing like "wake up at once, man!" would suit it better?? Again, it's just probably me...

On the other hand, no crits on the artwork, brilliant! ;)

About the teddy bear, you promised not to tell. :)

Historians are still conflicted as to the impact the teddy had on the out come of the impending battle.
