Thanks! My concept is simple, its going to be a worm wearing a cowboy hat riding a trout or fish of some kind. Done in 2d with a cartoony style. I am hoping to post progress soon!

Yo Don, the fish looks cool man. Do you think you will make the sea BG, sort of western-esque? This could be too corny, maybe the worm could have a star fish badge or something. Anyways Ill keep watching... :buttrock:

I think he needs some "hands" (I don't know the appropiate word in english)... other than that, lovely design, I like a lot his face... also, when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was 3D, great shading!
about the composition, I like the sketch at the top-right...
good luck with it!

Looking good.......maybe add an environment. Imagine a fence made from "coral"....they could be jumping over it. You could use an old "anchor" or even a "bike wheel" that's been dumped into the water.
Keep going.
Paul
The worm's facial expression is hilarious. I think it would be nice if you could make the fish's face more excited like a rodeo bull. At the moment, he looks rather sedated compare to the worm. Nice concept. Good luck.

I like the addition to the sign, and the idea about the sharks in the bg. I feel like the sharks arent quite working yet in the composition.I think right now they are competing with the sign to me. maybe the sign could be in front... so the sharks on his trail are more dominant. They could be off in the distance kicking up dust like a posse of desperados. That my 2cents man! Keep it going man.
Sandpiper
07-24-2007, 02:16 PM
Yeah dude. This is really turning out to be hilarious. Great characters. Push the worm look so everyone gets the relationship of the fisher's worm to a fish....right now it looks like a parasite hanging for a ride (which could be pretty funny too)
So you're not doing this in 3D eh?
dondixon
07-24-2007, 11:42 PM
Thanks fellas, I agree the sign is distracting now, id like to keep the sharks instead so I will see what I can do about it, also I did very crude 3d models just to get a base down that I painted over for this, but jesse's challenging me to try and model it, LOL I still dont know.
Thanks for the great feedback!

Thanks so much for your comment! And yes these guys are the best of friends, by nature they should be brutal enemies like cat and mouse, but instead they are freinds on a quest for the golden sea horse, a master of the ways of the wild sea, when they meet him they will learn the key to unlocking the gateway to the underwater town of gold and sea dreams, where they will live fruitful lives as adventures of the deep blue sea. OK I just made all that up but sounds pretty good right?
Anyway I am still going to try and model this painting in 3d for my final, but just in case I don't make it, at least I will have a finished illustration for the competition.

So I am pushing forward and going to try to model my scence and possibly use the illustration I already have as the inspirational work for the final, No matter what I still plan on taking my 3d render into photoshop to try and push the image further. Hey don, Im glad you pushing the concept further... but stirrups require 'feet', so I dont think they are reading right. But I like the idea of using riding equipment.
Also, They might look really cool if you exaggerate their proportions alittle more. Check out

08-03-2007, 03:41 PM
Thanks Sean! I agree, the fish hooks dont' read as stirrups but its just another visual element to make the composition more interesting to look at, a secondary thing, so I infact might just scale them down a bit to keep John Worm and Buck Fins the central characters.:)
Thanks Bobby! Huge fan of your stuff!
I am currently learning the ways of the displacement map and hopefully will have up dates very soon!

Sandpiper
08-03-2007, 04:01 PM
Maybe to make the fishhooks read better as stirrups, you should make the saddle a bit smaller and not hang so low. Then you can have those stirrups sitting up higher and you can make the barbs dull or broken off, rusty, etc. - like the fish found em somewhere on the sea floor. Just an idea since you seem to want to keep the hook and saddle idea in there (I think it does add another element of fun personally) :D

dondixon
08-04-2007, 08:18 AM
Sandpiper- Thanks man! I am not totally in love with using the fish hooks, I can easily through and idea out the door if its not working, I think my best bet would to stay as close to my intial illustration anyway, the hat I think is cute, makes no sense at all but thats what was in my head, the saddle bugs cause the perspective I want to use for this shot doesn't really allow the viewer to see it and it doesnt really help sell the idea any further. I am sure a solution will come to me after i finish this beer. :)
breadwig Thank you sir! Love the fish hook six shooter idea but I dont wanna give my worm hands, maybe I can incorporate it in the worm tail end, most likely I think I am gonna axe it! :)
Glad you like the models, I am expirimenting with displacement maps right now, I never really played with them before out of fear of not knowing what the hell I was doing. I also tried some touching up in Zbrush but for this project I think I may stay away from that, until i know zbrush better. :)

You have some very good character designs there. I think the first reaction of most whenever you see 3d cartoon fish these days is Finding Nemo, and personally when I saw the first colour sketch I immediately thought it was a Dory rip off, but now that I see the model, it is very unique and very well done.
Have you given any thought as to what colour the fin will be?

Hey there Don! great work!
Hmm what is it??,.... I don't know...yep, the pupils, they look smaller now, i have to say that the all dark eyes of your previous un colored renders had a little somethig so wonderful I can't describe now... I know you didn't meant them to be all black (I wouldn't mind that:)) but maybe if you grow the pupils, you know, so there is less white showing....
mmmm... I think the eyes had that 'cowfish thats been around the block' feeling in those first renders, even before you added the wrinkles on his eyelids, so maybe you could check if this works for you...
Weeh.. hope you get the idea, this is really hard to explain, more a feeling than an idea I gess...

Here I more progress with texturing and what not, It was mentioned that someone liked the all black eyes so I think I will keep them, I want to put a really nice reflection on them but right now its not giving me what I want, could be cause there is nothing in the scene to reflect yet,..duh! lol But even when I tried to map an image to fake one it was not giving me the results i wanted, anyway lots more to do, model sea enviorment, rubbage, or wheels, maybe and old bottle of whiskey or something. FOr now here is where I am at! :)

i know nothing about modelling, but from an artistic point of view, i think all they need is a little squash/stretch to dictate a sense of movement, right now they just look as if they are sitting there! or some motion blur when you photoshop it wouldn't go amiss (tastefully done, obviously)

sandpiper: "PHOOEY!"
This is looking great man! Personally I'd rather see regular eyes with big pupils and irises. Something about the black takes away the personality of this. For instance, now you can't rotate the eyes in a certain direction to help show what kind of emotion the fish has. It also looks a little "dead" with the black eyes, but that's just my opinion. ;)
Glad to see you are pushing yourself with the 3D. Gotta put yourself out there a bit to get better right!!?

Getting closer, I decided on a more lighter background to help sell my western theme, the deep blue ocean is always seen just as that deep blue, so in my world I wanted these guys to live in a almost majestic merky golden sea. I also think it will help make the sea creature I put in the background really pop, I could be wrong but this whole thing has been trial and error, So Live and learn!

Wow, What a radical change! It sure takes guts to do that:D And I think it worked!!
Well, for the majestic effect you seek this last one is the better, the previous one looks kind of murky if you place em' side by side.
I'm sorry to bring this up at this point but seeing this one i felt that the worm's head is too small, I think scaling it up would make his expression easier to read and make him more appealing, after all what I most like of the fish are his big eyes... I hope it helps!

You know the best stories for me are the buddy flicks, yes they follow a very over used formula, two guys from different worlds, nothing alike and yet they bond, when in fact all signs should point that these two should not get along at all! There is something very cool and grabbing about that to me. Maybe its because I value my friends. Either way that was the basic idea behind this strange behavior competition I am workin on. The Story of John Worm a rough and tough worm who has escaped danger and had his run ends with many fishermen. He is tough and energetic and very fast! With a makeshift holster he carries with him a fish hook, fastest worm in the Majestic Sea! With him is his bud Colt the most friendly fish in the Majestic, also the most talented, he can escape any situation, which makes him a perfect match for John Worm. They are freinds on a quest for the golden sea horse, a master of the ways of the Wild Majestic Sea, when they meet him they will learn the key to unlocking the gateway to the underwater(what is belived to be myth) town of Gold and Sea dreams, where they will live fruitful lives as adventures of the Deep Majestic Sea.

Hey Don, Its really looking great man... but you might try turning down the bright light by the sharks, its really distracting. But since you went 3d, you should also try out as many other camera options as you can. Sometimes I have created 15 or 20 random cameras around a model just to see if you can get an idea from a different viewport... you could be supprised what you find. Great job!

Hey don.. its me again!:D
I hope you dont mind but I took your image into photoshop and messed around for a alittle bit. I think you can turn this from a good image into an awesome work with just a few adjustmens to the color scheme and composition.
In this first one, I tried to get the guys to stand out more. They seem to be fading into the background in you last couple of images. So by lighting them and giving the background a complementary color scheme they really start to pop.

In this one I was fiddeling with the composition. I just adjusted everyones placement and angle to create a loop for the eye flow. I think something like this would be a better option because people would look at the buddies first and the follow the eye flow back to the bad guys and the back to the heros. Also the "run away from the darkness and into the light" lighting scheme will help tell the story alittle better.

Thanks man! And extra thanks for the visual examples, I like the use of the speed lines I feel thats something I def should incorporate!, The colors I like right now, I actually am ok with areas blending in and getting lost in some areas. The glow is a tad bit strong. And I could maybe give the buddies some more contrast using adjusment layers in photoshop, I even dig the composition thing, I do'nt know if I am gonna change it at this point but I may do something, either way I think I will take one more pass on it before I put this puppy to bed, LOL.

Man! This has come a long way from the beginning! I'm glad you decided to take it 3D. It adds so much more depth to the image. Compositionally, its tough because you do want to keep the focus on the duo, but still show that there is conflict between their happy world and what's pursuing them in the bg. Try the usual tricks, turning the image upside down, mirroring it, etc to see what feels right.
My hunch would be to say to maybe push back those evil fish into more darkness and keep that area murky while that contrasts up against the duo in their volumetric light and drool. Maybe even rotate that camera a tad more to the front of the the two fish so we have more of a perspective going that has them coming toward the viewer more but still lets us see those bad boys in the bg.....just ideas. Like you mentioned before, this is all art and is subjective to each and every one of us. I trust that you'll finish off this project with a huge satisifying "save" and then take a nice long drag of one of those tasty cigs of yours.

Made a few changes here and there, what I realize now is that I can try a million ways and colors and compositions, eventually I just gotta let it go and move on, and there are other things I need to move on to! I've put alot of man hours in on this and I am pretty happy with how it came out, whats cool is the next thing, I learned a lot on this one, so its time to rock on and keep going! I just hope I did what I came to do, make an image that makes people smile.
Story Again:

Yo, man... It looks really cool. I like how you changed up the worm, and the color. It has come a long way since the begining. That said I still wanna see more with those sharks yo!.... I know you probably dont wanna hear it, but keep pushin it homey. We still got like 80 days. Probably take a break from it, and come back to it... you got time to do that.

Gord-MacDonald: I am so glad u dig the higher contrast, this was really fun to work on!
elmasfeo- I figured the worm was just asking for a beard, you can't be the rough and tough John worm and not have atleast a little scruff! ;)

Hi Dondixon, i must say the image looks good so far but make it great.
Lack of depth in the sea makes the image look flat. You have beautifull characters and the image looks dreamy but don't stop now.
Good luck and have fun.

Ramitxon: Thanks so much! As I said before the 3dtotal thing was a fantastic surprise! This is my last day on the front page over there, so I am soaking it up! :)
guero: I am glad you are pushing me to push it further, but I have so many other projects and when I get in the mindset that something is finished its hard to go back in, although Lately I have been taking old sketches from my blog along with old animations and revisiting them, so who knows maybe I will go in and make some additions! ;)
Minnhagen: Thanks so much! The main purpose on this was to make a great image that makes people smile, so hearing people tell me great job, feels fantastic!
