Made a quick color test of the chess playing guys. I kind of like the Idea.
There could be other animals watching in the background behind trees and rocks.

Great stuff - as always. I miss the "strange behavior" hook a bit. Because everything is strange (a cat playing chess, a robot / bird combo in nature) the contrast 'strange-normal' isn't as frontal as the challenge topic suggests... Could be interesting to focus on just one thing that sticks out or - inversely - to push it and make everything even stranger. Like... whacko.

Super cool! :D what would be a goro sketch without a robot :d
I don't think it's that much "strange" though, maybe it could be a robot that looks like it is designed for a particular task that has nohing to do with chess?
m@'s right, there's nothing strange about a robot playing chess with a cat. I saw a kitten beating a toaster at monopoly on the bus just this morning...
You're 'pre-vis' is already saved to my hardrive as it's completely wonderful.
If I could pay you to doodle all day goro, I would.

Hey, Goro, good to see you here agian. Great concept so far - I love the robot design. Hi Goro, I like this 2nd better, the cat looks kinda naive, with that robot that has one nice fishy bone, and in the other a possible weapon ! aa poor kitty..but maybe its just there to provoque curiosity on the audience?..best of fun! and wish me luck haha...

Time for number 5.
I guess it fits best with the 'strange behavior' topic. But in the other concepts I could go nuts with detailing and I have more options to play around with the compositions. hmmm complicated ^^;
I sketched two perspectives...both have it's own characteristics. Which one works better for you?
Yrindale
07-01-2007, 03:49 PM
I'll admit, your latest there is the first entry I've seen that actually made me laugh a little. So I think you may be on to something. It was the facial expression of them both that did it for me. I like the emotion you can put into that one.
At the same time, technical skill wise, you won't be able to do as much with this particular concept, and I truly like to see your details and what not.

actually.....both of them together
Make em do a contest :D :D
Yrindale
Thnx! I'm glad I could make you laugh ^^
Well you're right about the details....I could go mad in the other concepts....
But in this one it's kind of difficult...I thought about making the restroom a bit
shabby and dirty with old posters or stickers half torn off the walls.
A bit water on the ground...etc.
I could play around with the light as well...maybe fewer lightsources so you get
darker spots.
Nichod
you also have a robot in the toilet? ^^
JakkaS
thnx!

hehe....I need to pick one...
I could combine those two in adding a mirror in the back...but then it would be confusing I guess.

I like the top one more, this concept made me lol. I think I preferred the top one on account of the increased scope for facial expressions. You could give the bot a really smug look on his face. :D
Go on, Edna Mode...you can do it!

what does the robot have down there ??

07-01-2007, 10:57 PM
woo, you are going berserk!!(i love it..)
but i don't think you have found the final idea yet. atm your pics are among my favs in this challenge but mostly due to your great drawings, not the ideas. it is nothing that stands out as super original/spectacular.
and i'm sure that you could finish a pic like the last one in a few hours, right? :p would be better to find a pic that you could put more love into.
maybe you could make a long line of different kinda ppl/personalities peeing and everyone is looking to the proud robot in the center. the direct impact might not be as good but it will be an image you can look at a bit longer.
Do you really want to know?
yeah .. i mean maybe theres nothing down there and the robot is just pretending to pee or maybe... .... well...errr... you know..... arrgggh clippy!

I like the top one most. It does seem funnier and is definitely my favorite joke among all your ideas so far. But perhaps it is so good because that kind of idea works so well in a quick rough form - it seems to benefit from the freshness and energy of the quick cartoony style and the beautiful simplicity in the composition. The ideas you had to make more of the illustration might take away some of the superb freshness and energy that works so well here. In my opinion you have a few ideas already which could make spectacular challenge pieces and which could be worked on with great loving detail while not losing the power of your ideas. Just my opinion. I have no doubt that you are one of the front-runners here - your work is superb - both in ideas and in how you illustrate them - and I'm amazed by how quickly you create these roughs. I doubt you'll need any luck, but good luck to you anyway!

not really, an illustration is not a straight photograph there's nothing holding you back from a bit of creative composition, even without the mirror ;)
That aside, I tend to agree with Fellah though

Vahn
Maybe he has a lil' Vahnrabbit down there looking up to the human. ^^
fellah
Yeah I know exactly what you mean.
I thought about the long line too. But I still think that I can't go nuts enough with the pee concept...as mdavid pointed out, it works as a joke maybe as a comic panel...but the other
concepts might have more potential to stand alone as a finished painting.
mdavid
I completely agree with you. You pointed out the problem perfectly.
The detailing could take away the energy the image has right now...
I think the painter robot works best for now...maybe I'll stick on that. But I don't know yet.
Maybe I can come up with another idea...
flyingP
yep...agreed
paulwdavidson
07-02-2007, 10:03 AM
Great idea........I love the potential for humerous contrasts.......the fact that a robot could be taking a leak next to you, implies in their world they'd cater for bots ie; the condom machine on the wall behind them certainly wouldn't have "one size fits all" or "oil resistant, for her pleasure".
Instead of a hand drying machine, there would be some sort of "industrial buffer, to polish his hands". Instead of soap by the sink, there would be an oil can to freshen him up etc
You get my point.
Keep going

Goro,
I simply love the practical jokes in the reactions of the guy for the robot behaviors, however it my humble opinion, that the strongest right now will be the rabbit and the robot encourage him to do art , 1sth it’s an easy familiar idea to understand the problem. And also has the potential of a good environment since the subject its art. So that leaves a more open scenario.
It’s great to see a professional like you working hard in keep entreating in a smart way!! ....Keep it up!

Here is another concept I sketched last night.
Somewhere in the future we have robot cooks called 'CU' (cooking units). They are programmed to make delicious meals.
But there is something strange about CU02. He fell in love with a beautiful cat.
In order to draw her attention he sneeks out of the kitchen with the most delicious fish.
He builds ears out of old cans and
ties a rope around his hip pretending it's a tail hoping to get accepted as a cat.
A colored version will follow soon.

whew...took some time to find a good composition. I'll think I'll try another perspective but I guess this one works already pretty well.

I'd really would like to see the bow ont he top of the cats head or the back of the collar. In the front gives it a bit of a masculine feel.
Good concept overall.
Keep it Odd!
I think the perspective is great. the fake tail gets a bit lost in the shadow though...hmm maybe some more light from the kitchen ? i dont know...
damn, that last one rocks my socks. great concept!

Wow! Another beautiful rough - it's a real treat to stop by your thread regularly and see what you've been up to! This one could work really well I think. It tells a story in a glance and I think it has so much potential. I love that fish in the robot's mouth - it adds a gentle humorous touch and gives the robot some real personality. Maybe the composition and the pose of the robot can still be tweaked very slightly - the robot doesn't seem to be heavy enough hanging there in such a casual pose, but this is all just a start anyway. Once again you've come up with a really beautiful solution

A friend suggested a more dynamic camera angle. The Bot is more catlike...but I think I'll work on the first perspective again.
The first one has more potential for detailing I guess...and it's easier to tell the story. I just need to change the pose. But anyways it was worth a try.
Thnx everyone!

Yep agreed. I'll work on the whole pose of the bot again.

i love cats so the last one is my fav so far....
You lose some of the scale/height of the wall from the new perspective, but I much prefer the robot's position.
When you posted your first take on the robo-cat-copy I instintively wanted to see a scene side on so you could make out the silhoutte of the cat's form and the robot badly mimicking it... Having said that - this is probably because I have a terrible time thinking in perspective. Which is why I do 3D!
Really great stuff Goro.

There's nothing like a Goro entry to keep you entertained. So many quality concepts, so little time! :D
I think the last angle is more visually interesting, I think it'd work better with more suggested perspective lines (like tiles on the ground or houses on the side) , and maybe a lower camera so a bit of sky would be visible. To tell the story better, maybe there could be the chef coming after him angrily?
(I agree with AJ though that a side view could be worth a try)

Hi Goro I really like your last concept for the action it self, but the tale of the robot it's dificult to understand what is made of, even though we know for the concept before this( witch is great as well), and this angle it is more cat like. maybe try to put some reations from other subjects so the impact of the behaviour its more strange, but it is for sure all your ideas no less than smart and very funny as cute.

Amazing sketches Goro!
Very funny things in here!Love the guy in the toilets with this robot(ofcourse, haha) and the expression on the guy's face, haha!
I agree a bit that the last 2 sketches, the first one is more storytelling.
Maybe you should open up a bit the canvas of the second one,and put some more elements who react's with the robot also in there indeed. To increase the strange behavior factor...
But I'm sure much more is coming up.
Amazingly enjoying it is, following your thread buddy!
Challenging to compite with you, Goro! Nice to see you in the Challenge.
If I were you I'd twist the concept of the robot-witn-human-feelings, don't be so classic;

Hi Goro. Couldn't stop thinking that the robot keeps me at bay. Its like - a robot places the idea in the adbsurd, whereas something less out-of-the-ordinary would make the action more strange, rather than the thing. So I scribbled this take with a dog instead.
Not sure myuself what I think of it, and it doesn't read quite right anyway but I think its taken the situation away from the absurd...

Hi,
your sketches are so full of life ! Love all of your ideas! keep em coming!

You are a sketching machine, hope you nail it down soon before you wear through your wacom! I like the dynamic perspective your friend suggested. In fact I would go so far as to say you could pull it in some more and have the cat fill the left portion of the screen, then the robot would be seen moving in from behind the the right. Depth of field would be useful to slightly blur out the robot, his face not so much - but the distance would be blurred out completely and would prevent you spending all your time detailing the background and keeps you focus on the cat and the robot. Hope you understand where I'm coming from and that helps :)

Hello there,
First of all I’d like to say how great your cat-robot love story is and the second scene with the robot crawling the wall top is my preferred. I was looking at the first one, with the kitchen in the background and could not stop thinking that the vision of the second robot cooking was a little confusing. It made fell like the robot was trying to catch the cat end turn him into a “delicious meal“. Call me crazy, but from where I came, many people eat cats. Anyway, have fun; I will be watching your progress with open eyes…
ah cute!! i love the idea...great sketches also :)
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/13012/13012_1183888420_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/13012/13012_1183888420_large.jpg)
Here goes another concept.
After reading your suggestions and opinions I put the focus more on the relationship between the 'CU' and the Cat. This time I left out the fake tail and the ears.
I think the feelings of the robot for the cat is pretty clear now.
The vertical composition helps to tell the story, that he left the kitchen and tired hard to get to the cat.
With the help of trash cans and cola boxes he reaches the top of the wall. But how he will get down again? He didn't think about that.
I'm thinking about to replace the flower
with a fish cause he is a cooking unit.
But I like to prevent that the fish is only a bait in order to catch the cat. But I guess with the little shy pose of the CU it could work well with a fish as well.
Then again I thought about adding an old poster to the wall with a boy giving giving flowers to a girl. That would explain his behavior with the flower. Uh- I guess I'm talking too much. Anyways what do you think of this one? Personally It's my favourite so far.

Than you very much!
AJ
Thnx for the side view suggestion. I was thinking about it yesterday and made this sketch.
I like it best so far. The Robot isn't mimking the cat anymore and he doesn't have the ears
and the Tail but I think it doesn't matter. What's more important to show that he fell in love
with the cat and tries hard to get her attention.
mv
Yep I thought about the chef coming after him as well. But then again I thought that
I'd prefer a calm situation. Not too dynamic.
walrus
thnx for the suggestion! I will try som more different lighting situations.
nwiz25
Thnx! Well I hope I can convince you with the cat robot concept! :)
I'll try my best!
AxelAlonso
Thank you! Well Yeah the tail... maybe
it's more confusing. I like the cola can ears though....but I left them out in the new
concept cause it's too far away to figure out what it is. I guess the concepts works
also pretty good without those lil gimicks.
OKMER
Thnx man! I will do som more concepts but I think I'm getting close to what I want to archieve with the last pic.
hdri
Like that? :)
JackZhang
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
dobermunk
hehe nice sketch there ;)
I see your point. But I wasn't satisified with the two first concepts cause the story was
hard to read. If I can fill the gap between the cooking robot and it's strange behavior I guess
I can work pretty good.
M477
Thnx for your suggestion. I'm still looking for a better story telling composition. The
First one was to weak, the second was too dynamic cause I wanted to archieve a more
calm romantic scene ;) well...and the thrid one....I guess it works best so far.
UldFerr
Haha ok..., it's a friendly robot in this case hehe. But I see your point. I think in the new
concept I made clear what the Robot is going for ^^

beautiful, Goro!
the poster idea sounds great and would bring one more step to the story. but i also like the simplicity of the scene as it is now.. maybe the poster will make the pic to crowdy and not as calm.. but i like the poster idea a lot.. rhaa... :D
I wish i had something constructive to add to that but I can't think of anything atm.. it's my fav as well.

Nice clever composition in the last one. It reads perfectly. Its very simple but it is very effective none-the-less. Hi Goro,
I love the flower, instead of the fish more romantic I think...the composition it’s a bit large but adds much more history on them…and makes the felling of greatness, witch its perfect for “love”:), you are great on what you do so can’t possible critic anything, just suggest to keep doing it until you fall in love of your composition as much as your robot and that cat. This it’s my favorite composition so far. But I also missed the rabbit.:)
Ohh, this last one is simply amazing!! Maybe you could have the bot give the cat a fish and a flower... I would love that! :D
You are not aiming to win this thing are you?

Hi Goro! First of all, awesome sketches, it was so worth spending last half an hour on ur thread, looking page after page. I find the story ver yamusing and strange enough for this challenge :) But without reading it, its a bit hard to get all of that out from just a pic. Mostly that CU is a cooking robot. He should probably keep at least one part of his uniform on him (most likely the hat, while all other stuff would blocking his body too much). The pose is great as it if u ask me, maybe his head could be rotated a bit away... if he is shy. And thats how it wont seem that he tries to catch her, so u can put the fish in his hands without any fear of missunderstanding the whole concept. The cooking going on inside is also a nice touch, but I would probably cancel the poster idea, coz it just doube the information that is already well seen. I hope I didnt talk too much :) good luck and dont stop posting!

Hey Goro... I really like how this concept developes. For the last sketch... I think if you put your fish on a plate with some green decoration besides it will look more like a dinner meal for the little pussy and not as a bait. Maybe CU could also wear some sort of cooking cap so it is more clear what the profession of CU is and the long term relationship of those two will also get clearer :) Great work... keep it up:thumbsup:

i'm terrible sorry for my late arrival. I've been following this thread for a while yet hadn't reply. I love the preview version a lot and I love the current one even more. The color and the theme is just so beauuuuutiful.
i still like the idea how the robot dress himself as a cat to approach the female cat. I think you should put that idea into the current concept. It's gonna make it even better.
Honestly I don't really like people doing robot or monster or fantasy characters for this challenge. As for me, the most strange behavior comes from the most ordinary character. robot/monster/animal/fantasy character = si-fi/fairy tale, which means anything could happen and not very strange. Yet,your concept is so far the only one that actually convience me. I believe the behavior you describing here is very strange and funny and cute.
I'm glad that I'm in this challenge with you. You are a great competitor. Surely I will continue following your work, to learn from you and compete with you.

A few updates. I'm still trying to figure out what will be best for the story.
Here is a version with the posters on the wall. It's just a test and the posters are only standins. I will replace them with more detailed ones when I decide to go on with this concept.
The cooking pot in the kitchen is spilling cause CU-02 left.
I put back the cooking hat on the CU-02 to clarify that he is the cook.

I made different versions of the gift.
A flower, a fish, a mouse or a real fish dish...what do you perfer?
I really, really like the dead mouse.
I like them all you understand, but the mouse just made me laugh out loud. I think the combination of how he's holding it & the idea of a chef handling a dead rodent just work really well (for me).
*edit*
Although... Having said that, it does look a little like he's maybe luring/baiting the cat. But then again, the poster would help put the point across.

Naaah...the MOUSE!! :)

hmm, hard. the flower show his love in the best way. the mouse is the funniest, still shows his love, but a little less(as AJ explained with the luring)
the 2nd fish silhouette could be better with some fins. and it is more love behind a fish coming from the kitchen than a mouse..
hard choice. the flower is a bit simple, the fish is cool. but flower is a bit better, but more simple... so FISH! noo.. flower.. rhaaa.. these choices! i won't check your thread again!!! :D
The way I see it, is that the flower is the only thing when you apologize (IMO)..
To quote AJ: The other things are more like a luring (bait).. But then again He is a cook and he's handing out a gift. Hmmmm.. I can see why you ask us... Pretty hard decission..
BTW what's he cooking then, milk???
I'd go with the flower, there.. I said it.. :D
Great sketchin' btw!

Well just there to make you doubt a bit more, because me personaly I'll say the plate!hahaha.
Like he's in love with da cat in some kind a way, he don't just give a dead mouse or a fish to the cat, but he took care to serve the cat a nice plate well finished.(maybe there can still be a dead mouse on the plate with some salade and so.haha.
THat's just my thought ofcourse.
Big up!

I vote for the fish dish too. It doesn't imply he's in love with the cat though...

Mouse!..... BUT MAKE IT BIG!!! (Like we have here in Venice...they're bigger than cats. Cats flee when they see them...). And make another rat walking into the kitchen ...:D

hey Goro

I vote for the plate! It looks like he really cares with such beautifully presented food like that. But really, the way I see it, you could go with any of the choices and come out with a winner
defaintaly an experience great work here goro. :) keep them wips comming.
the plate works best for me. Its very clear there that he's not luring her into the cookpot :)

I know! I know:
The plate... with sushi! Decorated with flowers! And a side order of mouse chops.
Glad I'm not deciding which one to use.
I do like the position of the hand going upward though, as it is with the plate and the flower. It seems to say "offer" more positively.

Somehow missed this thread ...
Really cool style and idea. Definitly one of my personal favorites.
Well , another possibility for the gift is a girdle of mice in heartshape (ein Kranz aus Mäusen in Herzform --- um Missverständnissen vorzubeugen ;) ) . There you have the love aspect and the funny mice :D
I'm anxious to see your decision!

fish dish. suits his cooking position.
I've enjoyed all the concepts so far. Wonderful thread Goro.
Once you decide on the relationship between the bot and the mouse, I think the choice will be clearer.
Bot loves cat or cat is pissed at bot = flower
Bot and cat are friends = fish
Mischievous bot and/or hard-to-please cat = mouse
Bot cares about cat and looks out for the cat = dish/plate

I like the plate, for all of the reasons everyone said above, no need to reiterate them all.
One thought, though, is what is the cat feeling about all this? It's just a silhouette right now, but its emotions aren't totally clear. Is she snubbing him? Starting at the moon? A slightly stronger pose could help - a clear head pinted up and to the right would be an obvious snub, while leaning in towards him could convey the opposite. Just some thoughts on it. But overall, I'm really liking this new camera angle and layout - nice work!

The plate and fish suit him (specially for that cooking hat :) ), the flower is an adorable detail, reminds me of Frankenstein saying "FRIEND!" *grins*

According to me, the best is the fish one. That's the more understandable for me. The flower is to relative to love I thin. The plate let us think he's fooding the cat and not trying to catch him (but maybe that's the idea finally, I've not read all the thread, too much replies:scream:, sorry in this case). the mouse is not so clear as the fish.
Anyway beautiful work

Hi Goro,
I like them all, but I like the flower more, my reason it’s that there's anything wrong with giving a flower its pure and can mean,. Lots of kinds of love, and giving food to a girl sometimes :wise:....its not that wise! haha..or maybe the fish, or mause, its holding the flower in his mouth or paws...I mean that’s strange!:scream:

Plate or Fish. Maybe a combination of both, like a fish on a plate...well...I think the most important thing is the fish, i think it fits the best.

I'm with the fish too. :)

Hey, well I think mouse and fish looks like he is feeding cat, with the plate is like waiter, and the flower is like he loves her, but the flower is banal. well as said W-I-L mouse with flower will be interesting idea, Maybe you should try it?

Yeah, go for the plate  It tells more of a story behind the relationship of those two and not just let`s the robot try to impress the cat with a bait :)
I think the flower works best - or maybe the plate with a vase and flower on it. Gives the most romantic impression IMHO.
The mouse and the fish look too much as if he lures the cat to catch her

just a suggestion... how about a flower on the plate? the plate works great but the fish just doesn't work that well for me...

Goro your sketches are just superb! I think I like the plate coz it matches his hat the most--the others just seems like he's giving the cat left overs lol..

Hi Goro! You have some very nice ideas!I really like the robot feeding the Cat!Now the chalenge for you will be to choose only one image for the next step!Good luck on that!
To be 100% honest I think that all four work really well 'together'. It's like the robot is trying really hard for the cat's attention. The four together tells a nice comic book like story :)

The flower for me! I love all of them but thats the only one that reads to me in an instant, the others require a lot more thought about his intentions.
