Greetings!

Well, I've decided to give this challenge a go, as I actually found out about it at the very beginning of the challenge for once, and therefore may actually have enough time to potentially complete an entry. Also, the topic is right up my alley... tell anyone I know that "Strange Behavior" is the subject, and the reaction is pretty much "Hmm... wonder who that sounds like..." ;)

I've entered the Animation category because I'd really like to finally see a character model through to completion. I'm not quite skilled enough in 3D modeling, etc. to do a hyper-realistic character, but my concept(s) are all toon-based anyway. Even so, I will most likely end up asking for a lot of assistance over the next several months... I look forward to learning a great deal from this endeavor.

Speaking of which, I do have a core concept with a couple of variations. I'll go into detail once I've gotten rolling on the concept art and character designs. For now, as Uncle from Jackie Chan adventures is fond of saying, "I must do reeeeeee-search!"

Best of luck to my fellow participants. Hopefully, I will be able to produce something that gets laughs for the right reasons. :p

Concept sketch for Sister Shred. The concept is a nun pulling killer tricks on a skateboard - definitely "strange behavior". The original concept was a nun shredding on heavy metal guitar, but the skateboard concept seemed even more bizarre.

Trivia - Sister Shred's actual name is Bernadine, which means (roughly) "strong, brave bear".

this is a chuckle.
reminds of teh time i saw two nuns in full habit and wimple on roller blades street skating in New York City.
I've always hoped my uncontrollable laughing fit didn't offend them.

Just riffing a bit, playing with style, age and appearance. So far, the middle sketch on the first page is about the closest to the age and personality I was originally envisioning, but the realistic-looking one on the second page is tempting... it would probably be the most humorous of them all.

Unfortunately, I don't think that I can pull off a realistic figure model, even given the amount of time left in the challenge, but I'll juggle concept and style around a bit and see what I come up with.

One side benefit to all this... I'm getting a great chance to test out my recently-created custom pencil brush in Painter... liking the way it's working thus far.

bstout - No matter how hard you try, truth always seems to be stranger than fiction, eh? Wish you'd gotten some good pics for reference! :D

Some facial sketches exploring age, style and appearance. The one in the center is probably about the closest to the age and personality I'd envisioned, but I think the end character will be a bit more toon-like, as I remembered that my original idea for the appearance was a more Pixar-inspired style. Also, as mentioned before, hyper-realistic characters aren't really that plausible... but we'll see what happens.

Two more sketches, one realistic, one more anime-inspired. The anime one is about the right age and disposition. The surprise was in the realistic one which, though not along the lines of the original concept, seems as though it would add an extra bit of hilarity and oddity to the final image.

I may do a few more face studies, then I think it's on to some more general character studies to try and nail down the style of the character in general, not just the face.

Hey Ed, nice idea! Should be really funny and strange to see something like that... hehe
I liked a lot the concepts. IMO you should stick to the realistic face. Or even if not realistic, at least a little older, as you said it makes the whole scene even stranger! :D

Progress Report

As it's been nearly a week since my last post, I just wanted to check in and provide some kind of update.

I've decided that the older (60+ year-old) nun would be perfect for this composition, as the age definitely adds to the "strange" part of "strange behavior". I'm playing around with other details as well, but they are far easier to add in after the basic model is completed.

I'm also definitely angling towards a more realistic look, but this is problematic because I'm really not sure that my modeling skills are up to the task. However, I'll give it my best shot, and see what happens. Hopefully, with the help of the CGTalk community, it'll work out.

Found some good reference for the face, will probably start in on the head model first, then worry about the rest. I don't own Mudbox or zBrush, so any detail work will have to be traditionally modeled or sculpted using bump/normal maps. And, though the final result will be a still render and "fly-by" render/animation, I'm going to try and keep the polycount as low as possible for possible (re)use in an actual animation.

Though things are going to be a bit hectic, I hope to get started on the modeling this week. Wish me luck! :thumbsup:

UPDATE (sort of)

Yowch... sadly, I've really been neglecting this project. It's still in my head, and I'm acutely aware of the approaching dealine, but I've been sidetracked of late, especially by digital painting. (been playing with my shiny new CS3 DP install, among other things)

Still have two months to go on this challenge, so hopefully I'll pick this up and get going on it again. I do have reference, and even got a very basic start on modeling a while back, but it's not really enough to post about.

Congrats to everyone whose work is progressing nicely, and especially to those who are already done or nearly done with their entries. Keep up the good work! :thumbsup:
