View Full Version : WIP for max Fundamental
brayon 06-28-2007, 04:12 AM Hi,
I was wondering if any of you would have a minute to look at a project that I have done for 3dBuzz in 3dsMax Fundamental. I have learn that in order to get better you need to put your project to forums like this and have it critique. Honestly, I have been looking at this web site for quite some time and I'm really intimidated to ask this from this forum. Because, you guys have awesome project and hopefully I will be there soon. So for those of you who take time and give some feedback, big thanks in advance.
Cheers

Ok, I will assume a few things for the no comments:
1. To bad for worth a comment.
2. To many mistake to even make a comment.
3. Or, since I'm only starting in these forums, I will have to make comments for others before receiving, totally understand that.
4. Or, just like me, can't visit youtube at work because it is under the Fortinet :(

Hello...welcome to the forum. very brave to show the world what you are doing. And let me apologize for nobody wanting to comment... in most cases it is the fear of being the first :)
okay, so first off all nothing is to bad to comment... it just takes a while...for people to notice you and really there is a lot more looking around going on than you might think.
I have seen the youtube movie and one thing that springs to eye is the way everything is black and hard to see. Maybe you should lighten up the movie a little so we can actually see something to critique.
Next if it is possible make the movie downloadable... that way we can watch it in our own time and have much better quality then yuoutube.
But on to the critique: the special effect are quite nice... especially the smoke. but the explosion has to much large particles to be anyway near realism. The jet, when it is leaving the ship makes me think back to the thunderbirds... so you want to work on smoothing the animation there and possibly look at some footage of a jet leaving a ship... If i remember correctly it more or less just drives off the deck and then the wings take over, I mean without the nose actually leaving the ground.
And then one last comment. I think you are trying to bring us into the action by keeping the planes in the screen... and that is good but what i am missing is the feeling of speed. So you might try setting the camera angle so that the jets fly trough the screen or overhead of the camera. That gives you a lot more dynamic in the action.
Hope to have helped you out here... and don't give up! I might look that I think you have done nothing right but that is not true at all. I know how much time and energy goes into a project like this and believe me you will becoming better and better.

Thank you very much Matsman, really appreciate it. And yes, their is so much in here that it is mind boggling :) Also, so interesting to see.
Thanks for the critique, I'm going back on it to do them. Yeah the video quality on youtube is not the best. Any suggestion on a better site for better quality? I'm surprise to see that most people like to download it. I was in the assumption that people don't like to download stuff on their computers, especially for making crits. Maybe, I will have both.
Thanks again,
brayon

i saw the video
1. could use better lighting with finagather an GI theres no reason for it to look this way,not to mention max render can do a decent job now
2.way to dark
3. plane takes off to slow for me the thrusters need some work run them in a sparate pass an add some fliker
other than that jus work on your compistion an shots

Thanks Thehive,
I'm trying to make the scene brither. You mention a few things that I'm really struggling with and I would really like to learn about them. Like the rendering, any tutorials or books suggestions? The seperate pass, do you mean, just rendering the after burner and then importing them in a compositor? Yeah, the flickering on that video doesn't seem as evident as the one on my computer. I will play with the noise modifier more.

there are a lot of tuts on line one thing u could do is throw a skylight in the scene an turn on GI an FG also u can attach a ambeint occlusosion shader to your diffuse slot in max
also what version of max are u using

can attach a ambeint occlusosion shader to your diffuse slot in max I don't know what you mean by that? Could you elaborate. I did include a skylight, I will turn the intensity up.
I'm running v8 and v9 but that project was done in v8.
Also, maybe some are wondering why I'm not updating this thread with a new video. The problem I'm running into at the moment is that I can't render because of another project using the rendering. And, I'm not running a mean machine!! Just rendering the scene with the launch takes about 3 hours and their is 7 scenes. I have change my camera view and made other changes that was given to me. Also, I'm trying to learn more about compositing and using the rendering, vray in max to help with the quality of the project. So, learning curve keeps going exponentially and loving every minutes of it :)
Thanks for the reply,

well
1. what are u rendering with
2. what res are your models
3. what rest are your textures
4. how many particles are in the scene
will with vray you would need to load a vray emvrionment map an load an hdr in there so u can light the scene. but its a night shot so maybe not. youll have to swith the light u have now for vray lights in vra u can render out your passes in the options boxes jus add the render pass an youll have a sparate pass. attaching a ambeint occlusosion shader to your diffuse slot in max is for mental ray but if your using vray dont worry bout this part.
jus use the vray materal an attach your textures to it

You have now really interested me in Rendering, today I went ordered three books on rendering :) So, this summer, I will learn how to render my projects with better quality, I hope! Always wanted to learn how to make my object look better and my environments. So, lots of reading and still a lot more learning.
Thanks for the reply:
1. what are u rendering with I'm a shame to admit it :( default Scanline of 3ds max.
2. what res are your models Low, not high enough for a good quality. Maybe out on this one, but I'm assuming you are refering to the amounts of Polys?
3. what rest are your textures The where 1024 for the plane and 2048 for the carrier.
4. how many particles are in the scene the water about 5000 and the fire effect at the end 10 000.
