Ok, woke up today and started thinking about ideas for this challenge. And then I thought of something! Here's my little thumbnail. It's around 1.7cm x 2cm.

The concept is a tribe of little critters on the hunt for a big meal! But it's how they hunt which is interesting.

If you can't see it now, you'll see very soon when I work on it some more. This initial thumbnail is just to get the idea down quickly with a basic composition. It's not meant for everyone to understand it, only me. It's like writing down point form extremely quickly and messy. Only the writer understands what he wrote.

Here's a very basic lighting sketch I did over my little thumbnail. The little guys are trying to capture the big fat dragon. Can you make sense of what's happening now? If not, everything will be made clear soon.

Great concept and sketch, Bobby! It's looking really nice. I like the design youi chose for the little guys.

One concern is how much the running beast is leaning towards the right. It seems a bit extreme, especially with how the entere rest of the camera angle is tilted in the opposite direction. If you "corrected" the camera (not that you should - the skewed angle is fun!) the big beastie would look like it was positively about to fall over onto its side.

Anyhow, just an idea. Good luck with it...!

I really love the guys holding the rope... also, about what michael said, you could counter the weight of the composition by adding more of the critters popping out of the bushes and maybe some hanging from the trees (though this might crowd the image too much)...

Totaly agree with everybody. Your character designs are very good. You always inspire me to go and create some characters myself. Love the way this is turning out. The big creature is very well though out, especialy the proportions of the bodyparts and the way it's hanging in the air, very stylized (I mean you have a style of your own..). This is excellent stuff Bobby. To come up with a few good characters is fine work, but to come up with as many as you have is brilliant. I'm a big fan of the carrot guy too - very nice idea and it doesn't bother me that he's not too afraid - he just could have that reckless confidence that typifies strange behavior!

I've been meaning to post an update for a while now but I've been a bit too busy with work and traveling. Just got back from the SD Comicon a couple of days ago. Today I took a few minutes to sketch. Here's a new version of the dragon beast. It's very similar to the previous but with a tighter, more thought out design.

One thought: What if you rotated that screen-left back foot a bit counter-clockwise from the heel, so that the toes broke out from the curve of the body? Might be a slightly stronger silhouette and in your layout, there's nothing going on in that part of the image that youhave to worry about obscuting? Anyhow, just an idea. Good luck with it!

hi bobby! I hope u dont mind give u a critique this time. I think that the shaded version of the dragon lost that cute funny and hungry look of the original sketch. The eyes on the sketch were much more thirsty for that carrot, the expression on his face was like he would die if not catching his prey... the whole effort was seen in his face. But now that is shaded, that eyes are darker and small, his forehead is sort of flat comepring to the sketch where the face looks like its in some very dynamic perspective... I hope u dont mind me saying all this but I really wish to see the final piece as strong as the original sketch. best regards!

however, some small things I noticed in the sketch :
shouldn't the little creatures holding the rope be hidden more, behind some bushes or something ? plants, trees ?
could be nice in the composition as well. And meaby the rope should still be loose, with the guys holding it really focussed and nervous to pull it at the right moment.

I will dare to give a commentary :) By the shade on the small creatures, I think the dragon is more far from them, but the first sensation is that is upon them and dont finish knowing the comparative size between the dragon and the small tiny beasts (for know dont looks much bigger than the small creatures). The dragon is closely of the ground, which would generate a shade on the ground much more defined. I know you are still detailing your concept, reason why you can ignore me:D

You know for some reason with this particular post, at some moments it appeared to me that the beast was hoovering with the aid of his little wings, and then it appeared he was running, if this is the case, then a dusty trail maybe even with some pebbles flying would increase the 'charging' effect of the beast.
Also the big shadow under him in your previous post is lost in this one, maybe that was what made me think he was flying.... I don't know....

I find your paint process very interesting, sort of distinct from others. Oh, and I really wanna see the eyes on those little hunter thingies...

Here's another update. Thanks for the suggestion about the dust trail. I was going to do that anyhow but it was good to know that we were thinking on the same page. (I still have to add some dirt kicking up)

Still a far way to go but I like how it's coming along! It's been a joy to paint in this challenge with such wonderful company.

I wish the "beast" that is chasing the bait looked more determined. Maybe his mouth is open, his tongue flapping in the air, a more stern look in his eye. I think that would add some energy and suspense to the piece. Right now he looks a bit likes he's out jogging and has just come upon these little critters. More energy and determination in the "beasts" expression will sell the gag.

I think the small creatures on the dragon´s tail clear tension on the concept, attacking before the ambush. Perhaps the creatures on the ground can carry a sort of rope or net camouflaged, to catch the dragon, only a comment :) Again superb work mate!! Cheers :beer:
