Great piece Bobby!
You have a great eye in capturing light through your expression of color. And your ideas are clear, refreshing and defiantely something of your own unique ideas.
I've watched all your videos and you've really helped me in taking my passion within the same intensity as you do.

Keep inspiring Bobby! ^^

This is looking terrific, Bobby! Really charming premise and it's always wonderful watching your paiting details fall into place. The fuzzles' expressions are all terric, and surprisingly expressive for faces with all teeth and just dots for eyes.

Speaking of eyes, though: I really love the subtle texture all over the face of the charging guys, really nice touch. However, it looks like the same texture is overlayed on his eyes as well. Plus they're about the same color as his horns, so it makes the whites or his eyes appear more like horn and less like eyeball. It might be nice to try a slightly less yellow color with less texture, at least to see how it looks.

One other random idea: What if the carrot stalks and the skirt of the guy holding the rope were a slightly more yellow color? Right now green is the predominant color of the background while the foreground elements are warmer. Having these two characters' green elements that same green as the background is not exactly confusing, but at a glance, carrot-head's fronds vanish into the back. Maybe if they were more yellow, they could pop a fractional amount more and be a little less confusing. Anyhow, not a big deal, just thought I'd toss that out there as something to think about. :)

Anyhow, know you're busy but it looks like you'll easily complete everything for the impending deadline. Good luck!

The details are amazing again! You can really tell that a lot of effort went into them. That being said, I do think the intensity of the highlights is a bit too even in certain areas and they stop too abrupt in areas like near the right fang (our left). Maybe i's just personal preference. I like it more the way you did them on the nostrils and forehead. It flows more. Good luck, I hope you finish it in time!

Hi Bobby, huge work man!!!Love it!!Just like Mv, those creatures are way too cute, and want one of them!!!haha.
Just one thought tough,.earlier on, thought we could see a bit through the dust that comes of the ground as the big creature is running on it.Right now the dust seems a bit less transparent and personaly i feel like we're a bit cut of the background.Think if we can see a tiny little bit throug the dust it will bring in even more deepness as there already is.Hope my english doesn't su*k too much here.
Anyway, huge fan of your pic here!!!

great bobby! so good to see you're near the end now...
my only comment is about the rock in front of the critters... the color is just too similar to them... I supposed it was another little hunter just unfinished at the time,:D but if it is a rock then it could be more grey maybe, and darker... I don't know.... so it'll be clear who is behind, who in in front of it!!

Best wishes Bobby, I like this one a lot!

I'm just about done now! I did a whole bunch of painted in some spears in the dragon and now I'm wondering if I should put in some blood?

I'm leaning towards no blood but I wanted to hear other opinions.

Thanks so much for the encouraging words everyone! Much appreciated

Slav

i would have to say no blood. that dragon looks like a huge whale like thing. those arrow heads dont seem to be doing any damage. the dragopig is the pwning the little albino critters!

SteevieWoo
10-29-2007, 05:10 AM

Awesome! The stucking spears are a great touch! I also love the hamster skull-mask!
Deadline extended! Relax and finish! :)
I'd really love to see some scars on the dragon. They could add a little depth to the story. As though the dragon is a tough beast and not easy to kill.
Maybe two little marks on the forehead and one on the nostrils...?
just an idea! :wise:

Hiun

Absolutely no blood!!... and this is coming from me... mark you.

Hiun
10-29-2007, 12:49 PM
Oh.. reason I say no blood is because the blood would throw off the entire feel, not to mention the fact that the dragon creature looks like a jolly and on some level a loveable character. Making it bleed would not be cool  Also, similar to what Marlon (Art2) said... without blood it makes the efforts of the little guys seem a lot more vigorous, like they really are overpowered.

HI Bobby! Blood! haha ok no blood darn cute creatures! :D

Fiber
10-29-2007, 01:23 PM
I love it!!
The only thing i noticed is that there is something (imho) flattening the picture,
making the run towards the rope less dynamic (because of less perceived distance?)
Could it be because of more defenition in the background then in the foreground. Or values pulling the background forward too much.
These are just guesses, but i would love to hear your comment on my comment, because i can't quite put my finger on it.
But again i love the picture!!

Dekartdek
10-29-2007, 01:25 PM
No blood. No spears. It would lose its hearty humor. The fun part is, that those furballs have chosen a very human way of trap. If they use other weapons, they become little monsters - less sympathetic.

Yeah, the blood is out of question. Dragons usually have a heavy skin :). My problem is that in the situation depicted, the little carrot will not make it. Is that fair?  I will have to wait to read how this story ends :banghead:

no blood...
you should add more tension to the legs from the back, they are too static now. i can feel the front legs pounding because of the dust clouds but the back ones feel like they aren't engaged in any action. and above that maybe the dragon should be drooling, i mean ... he sees a caaaarrot!!! :D

great piece anyhow, i truly think it's the best, you have my respect and admiration.

I would like to say no blood but I would like to say to arrows too. It seems that The huge creature is "happy". If he had arrows on the back, I think he would have the face of sombody suffering. The whole picture is cute so no blood, no arrows and everybody loves each other ! :)

11-01-2007, 11:36 AM
truely amazing work there, bobby!
real sense of movement and textures rich to the eye....a stunning scene!
if i could make two comments about it:
- the sky seems a bit featureless for now, or not as rich as the rest of the picture...even if you plan on leaving negative space to give some balance to the rich details of the picture, to my opinion, it is still a bit too neutral....i know it's still in progress so those lines might not be relevent.
- the two creatures holding onto the tail appear to be a bit too big compare to the overall scale...there are almost as big as the foreground ones...maybe to accentuate the perspective, scaling them down a bit could help in bringing up the montrous size of the hunted creature.

my two cents.

good luck!

plasteredcat
11-01-2007, 12:09 PM
My say would be: no blood, no arrows. I understand the narrative of something poked in his skin before he comes to the final trap, but I'd suggest maybe little colourful berry-like fruits splattered, that may had a sedative effect on the prey because of their scent, perhaps... It'd add colour to the red mass of the dragon's body, and take out a bit of the implied violence with the arrows themselves...
On the background side, how about some dusty whirlwinds behind the dragon, just like the ones the jets leave when taking off, to help him to stand out?
Anyhow, looks stunning as it is. Excellent piece...

no blood! maybe because of the piece's lighthearted nature, blood would look a bit too mature. An yes, drool sounds like a nice addition to the piece. As far as comments go, excellent execution and the final piece is going to look fantastic - it already looks fantastic! I love the simple but effective character design for the little guys. The dragon's color is also a nice touch and certainly is what brigns your eye in compositionaly. Awsome work, cant wait to see the final piece and its title!

It's looking wonderful. I'd agree with the chorus of voices calling for no blood. And I also agree with those who have suggested it doesn't need the spears/arrows. I've always loved the powerful sense of anticipation as we see the creature heading towards the trip-rope and suddenly that beautiful joke seems diluted when I notice the arrows, as though the trip-rope is not the main strategy in the hunt after all. It's become more like a regular slaughter. But this is only a very personal impression. I love your beautiful illustration style and however you decide to finish this I have no doubt at all that you'll produce a superb image

Scala - Thanks for the email. The Asian looking character in your Strange Behavior is very funny! What I meant was that the art for the book was done a month ago but it takes a while before the books are printed and sent to us. We should get the books by the 24th of November.

This is such a wonderful picture that truly deserves the win! I love the story that's being told here with the line of critters waiting to trip up their prey and the little ones hanging onto the dragon's tail. I'm so glad you managed to finish this for the contest, because obviously everyone agrees it deserves a prize! Great job!

Hey thanks everyone! There were so many wonderful pieces, it could have been so many others... Kei Acedera, Alon, Goro, Hiun, SteevieWoo, NinjaA55N, ashiataka, guterrez... and so many more...

If the challenges keep going like this perhaps they should put them into artbooks again? :) I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I had a great time everyone, thanks and happy holidays!!
