Splinter 06-27-2007, 08:10 PM I have been a member of cgsociety for a while and thought that now would be a good time to start a sketchbook thread. Any comments or critiques would be awesome so feel free.
This is a self portrait I did only a few days ago

Hi Splinter,
Sorry for previously missing your thread - you have some good studies here and it will be nice to see you continue those. I'd recommend doing more studies and using reference for your piece from imagination.
Cheers,
-R

Thanks Rebeccak for the advise I hope I can find some references for the poses that I have set up.

Nice start of a sketchbook :) I would also recommend painting on a darker bg - it's easier to work with colour when you start from something other than bright white :) Keep it up!

Good idea Intervain I will have to give it a try
Hi there
you can find some awesome poses in the work of Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta.
Will be looking forward to see where you take your Medusa piece (as I am making one myself but struggling big time with composition)
Good luck and have fun!

Hi John :)
I like those drapery studies...Maybe get yourself a small manaquin..you can buy at any art store,..or even a life like doll....Use it as your model...pose it,... wrap a piece of cloth around it,creating nice looking folds with a varity of folds and creases ect. ..then spotlight it in the dark with a lamp or flashlight....Make your canvas blackish purple, and then work from dark to light rendering what you actually see...paying careful attension to the way the light, shade, and shadows form the volumes of the forms that you see.
Training your eye to see and define clearly from what is in reality, will at the same time tain your eye to see and define what is in your imagination.
Anyway, keep posting, ..Looking forward to seeing more of your work and the progress that will come with it..:)

SpiritDreamer: I never thought to do something like that. Sounds like a really good idea. Thanks. I will have to try that. Maybe I could post a few runs with it.:arteest:

Here is my hunter that was just recently finished

Hi
Nice hunter piece.
Try to lower the values at the bottom of the piece.
In general, you need to make the lighting more consistent.
Since your main light source is coming from the background, everything on the opposite side (which is the viewer is seeing), should be a lot darker in value.
Also, why not shift the positions of the hunter and the bear a bit? Fore example, if you place the hunter a bit to the right and the bear a bit to the left, your composition will be a lot more dynamic. You'd have to repaint both though coz of the different angle, but I think it would improve the piece a lot.
So lighting (values!) and composition needs work...
Just my 2 cents.

Hi Splinter, my constructive crit for you so far is to not be afraid of adding more (darker) shading, and highlights. The dark shading you've added around the girl's hair in the most recent portrait could be worked more into her face as well.
Looking forward to more updates. :)

I am a little disappointed with myself I haven't picked up a pencil and just drawn in a while. I need to get back on it. I have been working on some animation projects, which is good. Although drawing really is another strong passion that I don't want to give up. So, on that note hopefully I will be updating my sketchbook with some more studies and completed drawings.
